Quote from: Troll on October 04, 2013, 13:38:50 PMI often wonder, How do they ship them? I mean we all know what "This side up on a package" doesI always thought that the warning in the service manual about keeping the speedo assy. sitting face up when it's not installed was a CYA...but maybe not. I'll look for some trouble shooting info on the gauge cluster...
I do not know how long you had it off, but the manual has a very specific warning that the Speedo must be kept in the upright "normal" operating position at all times or it might malfunction. Hope this is not it as it seems to be the only option then is to replace it. Check the obvious first, leads, contacts, grounds, plugs in properly.
These guys might be worth a call
99 & 2000 are the only drifter with a cable, R Series has Electronic speedo. Maybe that is what you are seeing
Burlington has been a hot bed of bikes this week! Some looking pretty nice I had mine in town several times this week,(mostly at Lucky Star & Charcoal Grill) always drew some comments from the visitors, mostly postive! Met a very nice couple from France this morning riding harleys. Could not figure out if they owned them, little language problem. Not going this week end though, really hate crowds that big and guess I don't want to show up all those Harleys
Judging from my ride around today, I though all Harley riders were here in Milwaukee area this week! Probably won't be anyone in KC
Hey; with a little ingenuity any thing is possible!
OK I am confusing myself so I am going to ask, , Speedo connector pulled apart; If you hook up a DVOM, 1 Lead on the BLK/YEL wire in connector on the bike side, other lead to BAT Ground, Key on , you have no voltage. Correct?
I must be doing something wrong, the BLK/YEL wire, when I trace it leads to the Neg side of the battery. That should be ground? Looking at the colors of the wires on the speedo head; I do not even see BLK/WHT? My 99 manual does not list any BLK/WHT wires in the diagram? I see 6 wires on the Speedo head, Black & Yellow, Light Blue, Red & Black, Brown & Black, Red & Blue, and White & Yellow. Am I lost here?
Quote from: Troll on July 30, 2013, 19:24:11 PMIsn't the BLK/YEL is the ground? Have you tested the Distance sensor? if bad it your need to replace the entire head but it sure seems that is where the problem is. You said that your had the bike apart. There is a Caution in the Shop Manual that Speedo head must be stored face up, "stored upside down or sideways for any length of time it will malfunction"Oil light BETTER go off when the engine starts.....Sounds like some kind of short in the meter's P.C. board. The black/white wire is supposed to be the ground....
Yes a question, You have run an Ohm meter on all the wires in to connector to be sure it is not just a wire with the insulation worn off? 15 years is a lot of vibration, wire touching could have abraded.
Quote from: chief on July 29, 2013, 16:27:30 PMOK, So if I read this right, 50 J1's were imported to Australia in 1999: 49 were sold in 99 as 99's and one of those original 50 was sold as a 2000? Titled for the year sold not year made? So nothing but J1's were ever officially imported? How Many Drifters were sold world Wide?
The Kawasaki Drifter was imported in to Australia for the 1999 Model Year. There were approx 50 units sold in 1999-2000. There was one 2000 Model Year unit sold, sales were slow of the Vulcan 1500 Drifter model and it was not imported again after 1999.
Like Troll said, The 99 service manual I have says the Speedo is serviced as a unit. It should not be taken apart for servicing so it is probably going to be a real project to get it apart and back together!
no first hand experience but: I believe the real difference is in the mapping. See Post 17 in

Quote from: draconarmy on July 21, 2013, 16:35:37 PMLooks like it has the approx 1" square rubber plug on the mount, just remove it and you should be good to go!ok and assuming I have the stock pipes it should be free and clear to mount on right? I have heard some pipes use the peg mount. here is a pic of my pipes
Right side is also the Muffler mount. Should be on all Drifters already it just has a rubber plug filling the mounting hole
Bracket was only on two up Drifter, Classic, or Mean Streak. Any two up will have it. Kaw stills lists it as available #35011-1770
supposed to be around 329 watts.
Don't have one but here are the install instructions
Hey Troll,
got a link to that intake mod? 5-10 mpg that is fantastic! Especially on the crap that they call gas here is WI
Our Drifters lack the many of the sensors necessary for the "on the fly" tuners, so the premapped or dyno tuning are what most opt for. If these sensors were to be added I suppose it might be possible to adapt one of the instant tuners.
Quote from: greenbarn on June 16, 2013, 20:48:45 PMIronclad Impact gloves are the one that have pads in the palm, work well for me. Dr told me to use them AFTER my surgery for riding.Hmmm.... I had recently considered asking the doc about the possibilities of surgery. Maybe not. Proves once again surgery is not always a "cure".
I can't get by an hour - my throttle hand starts to get numb in a few minutes. I use a throttle lock and that gets me by. But it would be nice to totally eliminate the issue...
Ironclad gloves - these are work-style golves, right? never thought about that, but sounds like a good idea, maybe I'll look some of them up.
