Drifter 1500 only / Too much fuel
April 05, 2016, 10:10:55 AM

Hi! I bought a 1500 Drifter from 2002. It was non-functional since 2015 spring - the former owner had a knee injury. When I start it is "dieseling", with a lot of black smoke, Apparently the mixture is very rich, but the ECU does not give any error. Before spring of 2015 the former owner claims it was running normally.

I experienced the same problem which is more serious when I change completely the airbox with a custom one ( teardrop shape, with foam filter). With the grampsized OEM airbox this coughing/hesitation occurs later on the RPM scale, but sometimes is happening. I guess grampsizing mod is enriching the mixture to the limit and if you don't have drag pipes you still don't have enough free flow in your engine. I'll try this spring to downsize a little the size of my jets and see what is happening ( I love the debaffled OEM exhaust from the estethical point of view, I don't want to change it for now).

Drifter 800 Only / Re: Anyone added an indian air cleaner?
September 21, 2014, 03:21:56 AM

I found on the ebay a classic indian chief airbox replica, not too expensive and I guess it's possible to do some modifications for VN800 - the problem is the indian aibox back plate is designed to be atached with 4 screws to the carburetor, VN800 has a round flexible flange sitting tight on the mouth of the Keihin. I think though is feasible with a little tinkering.

The oil comes from the crankcase venting gases. Behind the filter you will see this vent - a small metal tube from the no. 1 cylinder (the rear cylinder). From this vent you will see a tube going to the air filter box. From the air filter box you have another two tubes, one goes to the little recipient that hangs in front of your bike, under the water cooler (collects most of the oil) and the other one goes to the left side of the engine, between the cylinders and goes down with some electrical cables ( i guess is for draining other unnecessary trash fluids from the air box). It is perfectly normal to find some small traces of oil in the airbox, but if you want to keep your filter clean ( at least from the crankcase shit) you can remove the entire system and replace it with a single tube and a crankcase vent filter.

Drifter 800 Only / Re: Springer seat project

I made a similar springer solo seat and the problem was the rail, not the seat pan itself. This kind of seat was used in the past on the rigid frame or plunger-type rear suspension and they were also more in front of the bike positioned - the first front 1/3 of the seat was above the rear end of the gas tank. Also, the position of the rider was aparently more higher because the tank was lower - the backbone of the frame was up between the semi-tanks and the seat support was hinged from it. Probably the solution found by that indian saddle maker os the best for VN 800.

I put progressive Wirth springs in my fork with 15 W oil, as they recommend, but I think the result is to stiff. Never bottoming, though...

Probably some sort of advanced 4D visual technology from outer space...

Thanks, I am curious about the Indian airbox modifications. And the exhaust system is from...?

No, all VN800 have that feature, and EN500, too.

Meanwhile, autumn in Romania:

It's working. This is the link - but I guess it's easier for you to buy such a thing from your country - http://www.moto-gear.ro/contact-pornire-cu-cheie-36-72-big-twin-produs-157236.html

If you want to do it, make sure that you insert an 100ohm resistor on the ignition wire.

The original switch and the idiot lights are now in the spare parts box...  :) I am not sure where is the best place for the idiot lights, I could put them on the headlight in a classic style, but I'm still thinking and open to suggestion...

It's a all metal vintage replica of a HD classic switch, I guess it's easy to find on ebay, not expensive. I made the plate and modified a little the switch to attach it to the tacho house using two screws ( I got to change the tacho light, so I will take a picture for you then) and then the electric stuff...

It would be awesome, total independence from battery and cool starting, of course...

Not feasible at all if you want a real working kickstart. However, I remeber a phot somewhere of a 1500 Drifter retro Indian police style with a mock-up kick pedal... Fortunately for you, I just found it:

Thanx Darth W., but even though it could be a simply solution (You're referring to the solo seat, right?), I think I wouldn't like the look it could give to my bike: too cheap :-\
I was thinkin' about makin' some homemade stuff, something not too flashy and more in line with the two sidebars.
Btw, here's the picture of my Baby.

Nice rear crashbars. Where did you find them?

Well, my mod is probabl exactly what you need. You can swap the seats by removing from the frame the four screws that fixes the seat supports only.
