Title: Light bulb replacement in speedometer
Post by: badasscdn54 on June 09, 2011, 17:32:24 PM
Have a 1999 - 800 Drifter.  Problem I have is the light is burned out in the speedometer gauge.  How do I replace this bulb?

Thanks for any help.

Remove the dash panel, there are two bulbs in the wiring harness which plugs into the speedo... you can remove the harness and replace the bulbs.

Hmmmmm. Every day you learn new things. My speedometer lights only on it's upper side. Probably that means that I drive with one bulb burned out, since I bought the bike two and a hald years ago?  ::)

Mine does the same.  I should have changed the bulbs last winter when I had it all apart to try to clean the lense, but they were working then.  Bummer.

looking at the diagram I found it odd that the bulbs are two different part #'s . Wonder why that is ? Maybe ones brighter then the other who knows the bulbs look identical to me .

Or maybe one is designed to burn out in 10 years so's you have to bring it back for service.... :o

That would be awesome Ratman to put color bulbs to add to the Drifter tree decoration this Christmas . Hey is that all these bulbs are 1157 model . I didn't even look when I had it torn apart over the past winter . Looking forward to this years tear down so many things to work on  ::)

Sorry Drifter1 don't be running off right now but the Harley signal lights are just 1157 bit the cost if you buy an 1157 is one thing buy a Harley bulb it is more, that is why the Drifter has 2 part numbers for the same bulb, more money  for one......

I am thinking adding coloured lights to my brother in laws bike while he is sleeping one night.......

now you on the other hand my fine American Service Man.....you should swap your dash lights to red for black out conditions......lol.....

I think red lights would give enough to see at night and would be so realistic for looks and period that it would be worth the effort.....
