Title: Air intake
Post by: Petersoned96@gmail.com on September 02, 2023, 14:50:21 PM
I have two 99' Drifters. One has one air intake on the right side and the other has dual air intakes. Is one modified or do they come that way from the factory.  Thanks

the one with the single air intake on the right side is modified.  The factory air intake is actually on the left side with a crossover tube that runs under the throttle body.  the oem right side is a "fake" that is used to funnel the air into the throttle body from the crossover tube and houses the smog control sensors and stuff.  You can still get the air cleaner kits from Barons Customs and other places to remove the oem setup and go to a single air cleaner setup on the right side.  they do require you to remove the crossover tube....if you want to leave it in one piece you have to remove the throttle body, or you can cut it in half and pull out both pieces without removing the throttle body.  At least that's what I had to do to fit mine on.....could not for the life of me get the tube out without removing the throttle body...anyone else able to do so?

Soften it up with a heat gun, out in 5 minutes!

Here's a few pics done a couple of these now.
Remove tank and both chrome covers and associated attachments.
Soften up the end where the air cleaner was and cut it off.
Then send the hot air down the tube until it softens the bend and pull free from the right hand side.
Not pretty, but saves time.

Being on a budget for this one, the filter I used was a Mr Gasket 1487, around $30 off the shelf at Associated Auto Parts in Orlando (picked it up on holiday)
It's also on eBay UK, but around £50.
I sprayed the filter lightly with rattle can matt black and the chrome cover in black plasticote, looks great.
You'll need to cut some metal or plastic to cover the hole on the back of the plate, and fill the associated holes also (I used bolts and hose)
You'll need a new bolt for the cover and the rubber seal off the old chrome cover for a close fit.
The whole setup works great, and if you fit the blanking plates too, you can get rid of the emissions pipework and reed valves for a cleaner look.
Another bonus is it's now super easy to fit the cam chain extenders, a worthwhile modification.

Almost forgot, once done, the idle will need adjusting via the black thumbscrew at the bottom of the filter, adjacent to the waterpump.

I did that mod on ma-deuce, a couple of years ago and I'm very satisfied, 'cause it has increased the air incoming and I can fill the engine's better breathing.
The only flip side of the coin was all the effort it took me, 'cause of the carburetor adjustements...  >:(

Must be easier on the 1500 fuel injection engines, just played around with the idle knob under the housing and all fine.
Runs a lot better with more power.
