Title: 1998 Classic 1500 Stator Cover removal
Post by: Big Foot on April 17, 2020, 08:27:03 AM
I am trying to remove the stator cover so I can replace the front shift mechanism shaft. I can't remove the bottom bolt. It hits the frame when I try to remove it. Has anyone figured out a way to do this??  How do you get the cover off and by the frame??? Is it difficult to remove the shaft once I have the cover off???

If the cover is on the right side of the motorcycle, than i have also encountered this problem when working on the clutch mod. Unfortunately that bolt can not be removed because it is a few mill too long.
To remove it u need to remove the section of the right downtube frame that is held in by 2 + 2 bolts with chrome covers. First, brace the engine  with a jack, remove the bolts, cut down the offending bolt if u wish for next time, then away you go - pain in the arse, the bolts for that cover are different lengths, take note that so it is easier to re-assemble.

Support the engine from underneath and remove the motor mount through bolt. Raise or lower the engine enough to get the bolt out..

Thanks for the help guys. I took all of the motor mount bolts out. I left the rear through bolt in place. I was able to jack the engine up high enough to remove the bolt, but then faced the same  dilemma when I went to put the cover back on with the new shift shaft installed. I had a clearance issue getting past the frame. I was able to just barely force it past the frame. I don't
think I could have gotten any more clearance, but it ended up being just enough. Should be all good now. Thanks for the help.
