Title: BAD STATOR? ...OR OIL INSIDE CRANKCASE COVER IS THE CULPRIT?
Post by: HMedina1963 on July 13, 2019, 10:33:49 AM
Good morning, I experienced some issues with my 1500 drifter a week ago, after some testing I was convinced that it was due to either a bad voltage regulator or a bad stator. However, upon removing the crankcase cover I noticed that:
1.- there was no gasket between the cover and the crankcase
2.- I also noticed oil inside the cover and spilling into the stator.

My questions are:

Is it normal to have oil where the stator is located and that is keeping the stator from properly generating electricity

...or...

Do I have a bad stator?...

all of the above?.

I can provide pictures upon request.

I want to keep my Drifter running for many years to come and your assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

How much oil are we talking? I think you should expect a little oil in there.

Don't worry about the oil, has nothing to do with anything. The crankcase is open to the stator housing. Something has to lubricate the gear train. I'm posting 3 pages from the manual to get you started:
