I just bought my second 2001 Candy Cardinal Red Drifter 800. The ad said it was "perfect" but this ain't my first rodeo. I've been dealing with old motorcycles for over fifty years and never saw a perfect sixteen year old motorcycle until today. There is not a mark anywhere on this bike, paint or chrome. It has less than six thousand miles on it and is pretty stock. It does have Vance and Hines exhaust pipes and a windshield. The windshield is taller than I like, so I will change that out, but other than that this one just needs riding. It's almost too nice to ride, note I said almost.
It was well worth the three hundred mile all day round trip with my Jeep and trailer to go pick it up. I went over 12,000 plus foot Independence Pass going going to pick it up, but came back to Hwy 24 the long way on I 70 from Glenwood Springs. Independence Pass on Colorado State 82 is much narrower than I remembered with several one lane sections. There's no guard rails on most of it and a thousand feet down just a couple of feet from where you're driving. I made a note to self that I'm going to ride a bike over that pass this year. That would be a fun trip, the Jeep pulling a trailer, not so much.
My first Drifter has a scootworks belt system, and lowering kit on it along with a Kawasaki saddlebag mount with a driver sissy bar and rear rack. I've not identified the leather saddle bags. I'm not sure what if anything I will transfer over to the new bike. It seems a shame to cover up that beautiful fat back fender. When i get all that figured out, I will sell my frist 2001 Drifter 800. Right now there are five bikes here at the ranch and I'm fine with getting that down to one. Any bets as to what that lone survivor will be?

8) was stationed in CO for a few years and one summer my ex decided it was time for a trip so off we went. She bitched all day about me driving and she wanted to drive. So I handed her the keys after we gassed up and told her which way to go. We left Leadville and I was singing along with the radio......lol......Well when we got to Independence she said we needed gas, I said no got lots....keep going.....lol.......in Glenwood Springs I suggested we gas up.......when I went to get in the passenger side she told me to drive and throw the keys at me........yup i am single and happy.......lol.....

Where have you been all summer?
Had some heath issues and had to move to a lower altitude, but still in Colorado. My Perfect 800 needs to be re jetted for this lower altitude.
Glad to hear that you're back and feeling better. Now get out and enjoy riding that Drifter! 8)
Just finished re jetting the carburetor for 5000 feet altitude with a K&N air filter and Vance & Hines straight shot pipes. It had a standard 135 jet but was running lean enough to start turning the pipes blue. It now had a 150 main jet and may be a little rich. It wants to hesitate just a bit under wide open throttle. Would modifying the air filter box, as discussed in Grampsizing, give it a bit more air? Any other ideas to give it a bit more air? I really don't want to take it apart again to downsize the jet. The rubber clamp between the carburetor and the intake manifold is a real bitch.
Damn, I love this bike. I turned 72 this week and will keep this one until I need a third wheels or none at all. Going on a short ride with the neighborhood bike group tomorrow evening for a burger and a beer, or maybe two.

Yeah, I too wonder how long I will be riding. I turned 60 this year - 12 more would be nice!

72 and still riding, your just a kid, I am 77 and I am still riding my 99 drifter that I bought new 19 years ago and I have never seen any reason to change a bike I fell in love with the first time I saw It. I am a member of the Old Bastards Vintage Motorcycle Club and one of my riding buddies is 82. Its a matter of luck if you are born with the right genes and keep your health and balance and if it happens take advantage of it. I have ridden my drifter 800 across Canada from Halifax to Victoria, as far North as James Bay and many trips to the USA. Although I have visited Nfld, I have never ridden it on my drifter so one more item on my Bucket List. garry anderson
