I thought I would document the changes, modifications, and things learned while working on my '99 Drifter. :)
Most of you have seen my ride report " Drifting to Alaska" and probably remember the background story of buying the bike on Ebay and then having it shipped to my brothers house in Weott CA.
I flew down from Alaska in June, 2015 and rode it back to Anchorage with zero problems.
Before actually riding the bike I didn't know if it would be a keeper or a one trip pony.
Early on I knew it is a keeper. 8)
I also started a mental list of changes I wanted to make.
Last month I started by making the lift/skid plate so I would have a stable platform for the bike while the wheels are off.

They are excellent! Just what I hoped they would be. ;D
I cut a couple boards to hold the bike safely off the ground without leaving it on my jack after I removed the front wheel:

I cut them long in case I felt the need to put eye bolts in and use straps.
But the bike is so heavy it is solid on the flat surface of the skid plate so I could cut them shorter...
I spent an hour removing the front wheel and fender, the seat, the leather saddle bags, and the exhaust system.

Something I learned today:
Don't use Locktite on the front caliper fender cover screws that go into rubber sleeve nuts.
The rubber just spun and the screw didn't loosen up.
I ended up wedging a screwdriver into the backside of the rubber to hold it while I spun the screw out.
I had put blue Locktite on every nut, bolt, and screw when I took it apart in CA to replace the tires and tubes.
Winter project plans for the Drifter:
Paint the fenders and tank a more subdued color(s) to look "old".
I don't care for the green.
Make a better mount for the Singh solo saddle.
Repaint various black parts of the bike that are rusting.
Paint some (most) of the chrome trim black.
Paint the rims.
Build a new exhaust system that looks "old" using flex pipe, simple muffler and paint it black.
Make new panniers that are larger and look more like what a budget bound owner in 1948 might have made at home.
The Drifter is one of 4 bike projects I am working on this winter.
The Street Tracker is getting painted another color, a billet aluminum oil cooler, and possibly a round headlight instead of the number plat with dual lights.
The new exhaust pipe and muffler I already added to it this winter.

My Suzuki V-Strom 650 (I am calling it a T-Strom since I am using Yamaha TW 200 wheels) is getting the most work done on it with new wheels and tires (180/14 rear, 130/18 front) with hybrid forks, all plastic removed, new design fuel tank and seat, new rear subframe, new exhaust system, fenders, lights, pannier racks, engine guard bars and skid plate. It will be at least a two winter project.

Thanks guys, I like my shop even though it is a long term work in progress to get it where I want it to be eventually.

It only took me 60 years to get my own little shop.
Actually, I did have a one car garage/shop for the past 15 years in the house we built.
We sold it and bought this old place, it was built in '75 as a starter (cheap) house.
So it is opposite our custom home with the best of everything we could afford.
But this one is one level instead of three, has a level driveway instead of a steep, curving, long driveway that took me three hours to plow every time it snowed, is in town instead of half an hour drive... and best of all, it is paid off. (Yay!)
Robyn has a sewing room, I have a man cave, we have a guest room, and I have my shop.
It makes coming home from work looking forward to an hour or two playing with my projects really nice.
Tonight I had two boxes delivered, one is the wheel truing stand and the other is the flex tube for the Drifter's new exhaust system.
Interesting stock exhaust design...
The headpipe is 1.625" for about 8" and then it cuts down to 1.375" heading to the muffler under the swingarm. I am used to stepped pipes on exhausts but I don't remember ever seeing one that stepped DOWN in size.
I'm sure they had a reason, even if it wasn't for performance, packaging perhaps?
The general thinking (as I understand it) to increase torque at low rpm is to use a smaller headpipe diameter.
To add more power higher a larger pipe diameter is used.
And for a good all around power range a smaller diameter headpipe is used for a certain length and then the pipe diameter increases for less back pressure as the rpm increases.
I'm using 1.5" flex for the curves, and the same size for the straight tube.
The muffler has 2.5" inlet and exit so I will be using reducers to match up.
The plan is to make it double wall with 1.5" tubing wrapped with exhaust heat wrap all inside 2.25" flex and straight tube. The pipe wrap will cut down on heat transfer and keep the inner and outer pipes from rattling together. That's the plan so far, I will find out if it is successful or a failure. I'm using a Borla muffler.
That's the fun part of projects, thinking it is a good idea, before the reality shoots it down in flames.
Sometimes. Usually I am very happy with how a project comes out.
Sure I would do it differently next time, but I can always come up with a better way to do things...
After I've done it.

It is very thin steel, galvanized, and very light.
Life span before rust through will be much shorter than a good heavy duty steel pipe.

I'm at the same point in life, where I should be downsizing. Get a smaller, cheaper place, get rid of a mortgage, go with everything on one floor, etc. I'm looking to have more land though and get away from neighbors. I'm just looking for a small farm set up where I can keep all kinds of utility trailers, and construction/farm equipment (I'll buy and sell) outside and no one can complain about the look of the place. I'm in an HOA setting in a regular neighborhood with sky high school taxes. It's time for a change.
Start looking for that farm now ;)
We decided to start looking with no rush factor.
My wife did get very frustrated when I wasn't interested in one place after another that she liked.
She said that I would never find what I wanted at a price we could afford.
About a year later one came on the market that I did like so we jumped on it.
We needed place to park the 36' motorhome, two (now three) utility trailers, at least five cars, a fenced yard for the dogs but not a lot of land to maintain. We had that at our hillside house and it took too much time keeping it presentable.
I really enjoyed being out in the sticks, but the rich people were building all around us and soon we wouldn't have been "out of town" just out in an expensive area.
I liked the quiet and privacy out there and wanted something like that in town.
This house is at the end of a dead end circle in an older established neighborhood so we have no drive by traffic and we are both happy with how private it feels here and yet I am only 3 miles from work and can come home for lunch if I want.
After buying this place we put the hill house on the market and sold it for what we wanted.
That way we could pay this place off and still had $30k or so left over.
We did spend a year remodeling this place and are still working on projects inside and out but we plan to stay here for the duration so it is no hurry to finish them.
Far too many people sell their house and then pick the best of what is available at that time to choose from.
On Drifter news, my new Borla muffler showed up today and UPS will deliver my pipe bender tomorrow so I can get started on the new exhaust system... :)
New muffler arrived and so did the pipe bender.

Considering that both the front and rear cylinder head pipes reduce down just before going into the under bike muffler I am pretty sure it is not for performance (increasing torque at lower rpm) but is just for packaging into the muffler body.

Nope, not a mandrel bender but it will have to do for my use.
It is another great deal on Amazon for those of us outside the lower 48.
This puppy weighs 88 lbs, and would have cost at least $280 to get it shipped up.
But on Amazon Prime, I only had to pay $27.00 for shipping! And it arrived in 3 days. :)
Hmmmm, I wonder if they sell lathes? Mills? ;)
Now to remove the tank and rear fender to prep for paint.
And to measure for exhaust header flanges I will need to start the new pipes at the head.
This afternoon I drive out to the powder paint shop to pick up the newly painted hubs for another bike project.
I have 3 wheels to build now. Never done that before but I am looking forward to it.
How hard can it be after all? It ain't rocket surgery :D

I certainly like the Drifter more than I expected.
It was really the only cruiser style bike I ever liked and the only one I even considered buying.
When this one listed on Ebay I decided to put in the minimum bid ($3,000) and if I was the only one to bid, great, if someone else bid on it that was fine too.
But maybe everyone else was smarter than me and knew that a bike in Florida would have corrosion and rust problems... :-[
But riding it up from California to Alaska helped me to really like riding it.
I wasn't sure if I would keep it before riding it, now I don't see selling it anytime soon. :)
Nothing new on the Drifter yet, I have been spending my limited shop time doing the final assembly of the Triumph engine for my Rickman.
And finally tonight I put the engine in the frame for good!
I hate to have an engine apart long since I can lose parts like nobody else.
Now I can get back to the exhaust system puzzle for the Drifter ???

I really like my shop you can tell.
It isn't fancy or well equipped compared to many, but it is the best I have ever had!
Interesting idea, putting the flex over the stock pipes as a heat shield.
Now that I have taken the stock system apart it does seem like that is possible.
I will try to remember to check that out.
The actual Roadhouse system does have the flex pipe going over solid pipe........they are just a slide over cover and in one set I saw it was cut out in the back to allow the heat out....

I took a look at the old exhaust pipes I have and found two possible candidates for the head pipe flanges.
Both are new stock take-offs from bikes that the buyer had the dealer switch out for an aftermarket system.
I bought a few of these when a dealer was moving to a new building and had a garage sale.

Unfortunately BORLA is in raised letters so I will need to wrap it with a thin aluminum heat shield spaced a bit off the muffler to cover that.

So far things are progressing as hoped. 8)
Keep in mind that if all goes according to plan all of this will be hidden by the 2" flex tube that goes over the inner pipe.
Still to do list:
Buy the pipe wrap that will go around the inner flex tube, inside the outer flex tube.
Buy the exterior 2" flex tube that will actually be seen.
Decide how I want to make the muffler end caps with the 1 1/2" tube size to match the inner flex tube.
Buy some 1 1/2" straight tube for the muffler outlet pipe.
So far so good ;)

I will make a bolt on connection to the muffler so that I can change the muffler if I don't like it.
I don't like how big it is so if it doesn't sound good to me, I will make my own muffler that is about 3" diameter.
Hopefully once it is together and painted flat black it will look smaller and mostly disappear.

The heater in the shop died. Or is on life support. I think the fan motor is overheating and tripping an internal relay.
I could only get the shop up to 52 degrees so I worked on other projects.

The other tank and seat are for my street tracker that is also getting a change of color.
Other good news is that the 2.25" flex tubing for the new exhaust is finally on its way north to Alaska.
When it arrives I will be able to work on putting all the pieces together.
I'm not keen on the looks of the big fat Borla muffler so if it doesn't sound really good I will be replacing it with a smaller diameter glass pack probably. That would be more fitting with the period I think. That's the reason to make it myself, i can change it myself. ;)
One interesting thing when I was taking the tank off the bike I discovered that when it had been painted green, they did it on the bike! The electrical connectors and a few wires and hoses had green overspray on them. That was quite some masking job they had to do on the entire bike to be able to paint the tank while installed. :o
I guess the paint shop didn't want to try to find out how to remove the tank.
Or the previous owner probably. The fenders had been removed though.
My outer flex pipe arrived.

The outer flex tube will slip over the inner tube after I seal weld the inner tube to the pipe flange stub.
Then the inner pipe will get welded to the collector and the outer flex will slip cover the joint.
That's the plan so far anyway, subject to change if I figure out a better way.
The outer tube will get a 3/4" wide band clamp around it at the flange for appearance.
Or possibly just a section of tube the size of the clamp welded over the end.
I haven't found anything to use as a dressing and since it is all getting painted flat black anyway... ???

I sprayed the paint on the tank and fenders before leaving and it turned out unacceptable.

So much "junk" in the air got stuck in the paint and since I am using mat clear I can't buff it out.
And the color was just too white...

I also painted the parts for another bike in the temp paint booth, and my wife is going to use it to paint her sewing machine before I take it apart.
I had to move my Drifter to make room for it and with no wheels on the Drifter I was glad to have a good rolling jack and flat surface to make it secure...

I have some painting to do on the forks and then I can put the bike back together and finish the exhaust system.
The weather has been exceptionally warm here with highs in the 40's so the snow has melted away and people are already riding!
That is amazing, and about two months early.
We aren't complaining though! 8)
cool idea on the paint booth. I have used a large cardboard box in my back room.....when you need to come up with an idea it sometimes is good. Now why the sewing machine....lol......
I have always used the large cardboard box before.
Same filter and exhaust fan blowing out the garage door.
But in my previous shop I had heat in the slab so very little dust in the air.
I forgot about that this time and the overhead gas heater blows everything around almost constantly.
I didn't notice that until I painted of course. Duh...
For small jobs I will turn the heater off from now on.
The sewing machine is an antique, 1922 Singer that my wife is restoring.
It will get all new gold filigree decals over the black paint and then gloss clear coat over that.
She will use it when we are "camping" in our RV since it is a hand crank machine.
Very neat.
She has several other sewing machines in her sewing room that she uses normally.
No, she doesn't sew anything practical, she loves to design and make dresses from the past.
1600's, 1700's, 1800's and a few from the early 1900's.
After she makes one, she may get to wear it once somewhere, then she puts it on Ebay and sells them for more than what she has in the materials so it is a self supporting hobby, not a business.
She's happy and that makes me happy.
Of course, if she would make these fancy dresses in a more common size they would find more buyers but she makes them her size, which is tiny. 5' tall tiny. Oh, well...

JagLite know were you are coming from, I have an Ikea farm tractor seat with wheels, I can roll around the living room really easy with it, really close to a bathroom, the kitchen is right there, and of course the big screen TV to watch a hockey game while tinkering. So much better then the shed........Now you want to see a nice shop you should see GreenBarn's. He will tell you his shop also comes with delivery service for meals....but that is just his wife's way of keeping him out of the house and out from under her feet........lol.......

We like the new tan/creme/beige color much better than the white and I was finally up to putting the bike together.
I only spent a few hours on Saturday and a couple on Sunday but I did get a bit accomplished.

I sanded down the forks and headlight trim rings that were rusting and/or corroded and primed them.
I had planned to shoot the gloss black last thing but when I went to set up I discovered I only have mat black on hand.
Oh, well, it was a good time to stop and not overdo things.

I also went through my stash of NOS Kawasaki cruiser billet dress up items and picked a couple to use.
Of course they are polished aluminum and would not go with the old school no chrome look I like on the Drifter so I sanded them and primed them.

A once piece handle bar top clamp, the indicator light fascia, and the stem bolt cover are all Fire & Steel parts.
Should be Fire and Aluminum, or Fire and Billet I think ::)
I know, I should pull the forks to do a really good job instead of just a touch up on the bike, but it is spring time here and I want to ride!
I will probably have the front crash bar powder painted black next winter so this will be temporary.
Hopefully I will be able to paint the black tonight so it can dry for a few days before I install it.
I also put in new brake pads front and rear, and a new ss black sheathed front brake hose.
Now to get some DOT 4 brake fluid to fill and bleed the system.

I was ordering some stickers to put on my project bikes so I chose SPD for the fun of it.
Not a business since I just build projects for myself, but now I have smaller stickers for each project.
The smaller ones are exactly the same, they are 3" wide and the door sticker is 10" (I think)

Finally healthy enough to spend some quality time with my bikes this weekend.
I installed the front the front fender and wheel with new brake pads and black covered ss brake line and replaced the brake fluid.
All the bolts and nuts were badly corroded from the time the bike spent in Florida so I chased the threads to clean them up.
The paint in the threaded inserts was part of the problem I'm sure.

I had been looking for it for a couple days but unable to find it.
I knew it was in my shop I just wasn't seeing it.
I was able to find it, right where I had looked for it at least once before...
My wife says I suffer from male pattern blindness.
I guess so since I can lose something in an empty paper bag.
When she came out to check on me this evening I told her I was searching for the fender side cover.
She knew immediately where it was, in the house, by my computer.
As usual, she was right.

BTW, where did you get that led light? And was it a plug & play, or did you have to make some mod for it?
The front wheel was right where I had thought I put it, next to my Honda XR80.
I looked for it there several times, and I would not be surprised if I moved it to look behind it without recognizing it.
I've been like this all my life so nothing new.
The little LED light came from the auto parts store.
It can be used as a marker light, a truck bed light, or as a dome light, etc.
It has 2 LED's in it and is weather sealed.
I just removed the original bulb socket and used silicone to glue the LED to the original metal plate.
It isn't very bright though.
Since LED's are directional it could be that a light that can be mounted inside facing forward will be brighter.
Mine are mounted so that the light is shining up into the top of the Indian head.
It doesn't matter to me but it might to others.
The light came with the wires as shown so I just used some wire I had on hand to complete the hook up.
Keep in mind that LED's only work when wired correctly.
Polarity specific? I don't remember what it is called.
Unlike typical lights that will work with either wire as ground.
:o Jaglite seen one of them little LED lights over to Canadian Tire the other day and it was like $9.99 so bought one. I was thinking of adding it the rear of the bike. I have the stock tail light set up and right above the license plate is that red reflector. So my next winter project will be to remove that reflector and wire the LED in to the brake lights.......bit more lite back there......

The blacked out lower part of the wind screen is Dip-It spray.
I wanted to make it easy to reverse if I didn't like the look.
I do like it so I may peel off the Dip-It and use satin black paint.
But it is holding up just fine so I am in no hurry to do it!
I wanted the satin black look so I painted the outside (front) of the screen.
If you want shiny, paint the inside.
I covered the air cleaner covers with the same black Dip-It spray and they are holding up perfectly too.
So, I assume you did the same for that indian headdress, don't ya?
Really a good mod to think about...
I tried really hard one winter to put tint in the inside of the windscreen and found it really next to impossible due to the curves and shape of the windscreen.
So I fell back on an old idea from fish keeping, for years I used to spray paint the outside back of all my fish tanks. Once it dries it looks really good. So I tried it......
I used gloss black paint to spray the inside of the windscreen let it dry for a few days and cure nice then replace the hardware and it looks really good, hides a lot of the clutter in the area and wires are hidden. I like the looks of it.

It has been sunny, warm, and dry! :)
That means I have been out riding my other bikes and not working in the shop on my bike projects.
But it finally rained on Saturday so I finished welding up the new exhausts system and took it for a ride.

I haven't painted it yet, I wanted to burn off any oil and contaminates before painting it stove black.
The flex tube is double wall with the inner being 1.625" ID and the outer is 1.875" ID.
I had planned to put pipe wrap over the inner tube (inside the outer) but there was no chance of that.
Maybe if I had been able to get 2" ID outer tube.
The muffler is a Borla with a 3" ID core and it is straight through, before I welded my own end caps I could roll a tennis ball through it.
(I think, I didn't try)
So I was very amazed at how it sounds. ???

It is hardly any louder than stock!
Sounds much better, but it is soooooooo quiet.
I may cut the tailpipe off, cut a larger hole through the end cap and weld on a larger diameter tailpipe.
The tailpipe is 1.75" on it now so I could go to a 2.25" and try that.
I don't want it to be real loud, just loud enough that I can hear the exhaust over the mechanical engine noise.
But it does sound like a MOTORcycle now, just a quiet one.
I'm not real happy with how it came out.
The front pipe should have been 3" or so longer to have the connector farther back.
Not simple to cut and add length in the flex. :-[
The muffler is just too big in diameter to look the way I saw in my mind.
Experimentation continues (on rainy days) 8)
I am looking at what glasspack mufflers (3.5" OD) I can get (so many places won't ship to Alaska) and I may switch over to one, and mount it farther forward.
I also look at the hole left under the swingarm and think about what kind of storage box I could put down there.
I could weld up a removable auxiliary fuel tank, or a big tool box, or general storage, etc.
If I relocate the reg/rec from the left side to the front it would be easy access to the under swingarm storage.
Next winter project list. ;)
if it is quiet think of the wildlife you can sneak up on and get some really cool pictures...lol.......

Finally got the Drifter back together and went for a ride.
As always I rode first to a big empty parking lot and practiced slow speed maneuvering.
So HEAVY! But after just a minute or so I got the feel back and soon I didn't have to think about starting, stopping (hard and quick), turning or shifting. It is so different from my other bikes that I need to get used to it again even though I have been riding my other smaller lighter bikes. She may be heavy but she sure is comfortable to ride! :)
The black pin stripe on the fender crease will probably wait until the winter project season stops my riding.
Same with the solo seat mounting I need to make. Right now I just want to ride.

I think it might get a bit more volume as the muffler gets burned in.
I have a similar straight through Borla on my Miata and it is also not loud but sounds great.
I seem to recall that when I installed it on my car 14 years ago that the first week or so it was very soft then as it burned in it got a bit more growl to it that hasn't changed in all these years.
I just got back from another after work ride and I am getting more comfortable guiding the beast around.
It really does require a different style of riding compared to my light, tall, and instant response dual sports.
Now to plan a weekend camping trip...

Rob, I agree with you about that ugly seat!
But it is very comfortable for me alone, and for my wife if she is with me.
I am thinking of ways that I might be able to hide/conceal it with a bit of luggage.
Perhaps a small rack behind the seat with a bag always on it.
I usually have a roll bag on the passenger seat that I use as a back rest for long rides but that doesn't improve the looks of the seat hanging in the air back there...
I wanted to keep the stock seat because there is times I ride 2 up, then on long trips I like my sissy bar pack as a backrest. But it was not comfortable nor good looking, so I took it to a custom seat maker. For less than $300.00 I got a gel insert added and memory foam, now it is super comfy and really looks good, I had the step steepened, slightly raised and then the leg areas shaved down a bit to make the seat narrower, and had my butt area sloped back a bit to make it more a bucket seat.

I do find it odd that the kit comes with SAE (American) bolts instead of Metric to match the rest of the bike.

Shifting is easy and rather "rubbery" feeling like my old VW van. ???
It is kinda fun watching the hand shifter move when I use the foot shifter. ;)
Only once did I start in second gear at a stop sign when I thought it was in first.
I can feel the gears move much better with my foot but I will develop the feel with my hand soon.
Excellent packaging for shipping protection too.
I wish all companies would make the effort to properly pack items.
I will give it two thumbs up on the cool rating 8)
And a 9.5 on the Ten scale, only losing half a point for not using Metric bolts.

I have the hand shifter too. Some people don't think the shifter actually works, but it works great.
I was stopped at a light in front of a biker bar last week and the guys out front looked like they were going to take bets as to whether or not I would use the shifter. Their jaws about dropped on the floor as I drove away using the hand shifter.

Started the bike up and it sounds great! :)
Since the muffler core is straight through I was concerned it might be too loud but it isn't at all.

The next day I took it for a test ride and it sounds perfect. 8)
Not loud, not annoying, but a very deep throat rumbling that I can just hear over the wind and tire noise at speed.
Surprisingly my butt dyno tells me there is a real improvement in power from midrange up. :)
I wasn't expecting any difference since I haven't improved the intake side but evidently the stock muffler and my original small tailpipe choked the gas flow enough that opening up the flow helped let the horses out.
Or maybe it just sounds so much better now that it feels more powerful. ::)
Either way, I'm happy. ;)

Before going for my 2 hour test ride I checked the tire pressure by looking at the Ride-On Smart Caps and for the first time, one was blinking red.
Huh? :-\
I removed the cap and checked the pressure with my gauge and sure enough, it was down to 28 lbs.
Hmmm, a leak or what?
I added air and reinstalled the Smart Cap and so far it hasn't shown a loss.
I will check the pressure with my gauge before my next ride to see if I have a slow leak, or a very slow leak. ::)
They all lose pressure slowly, so I hope that is the case here since it is a royal pain to fix a flat on the Drifter. >:(
So, I am very glad I have the Smart Caps to let me know there may be a problem. ;)
No problem if you are diligent and check your tire pressure before EVERY ride, but for most of us, it is once a week, or once a month, and a few never check it.
And the hand shifter works great on the road! :)
I practiced with it on my test ride and only once started from a stop in the wrong gear.
The foot shift allows me to feel the gears change but the hand shift is too rubbery feeling.
I am sure I will develop a better feel with the hand shifter over time.
Just like my old VW bus, it takes time to get the feel.
Fun to see the hand shift move when I use the foot shift too. ;)
now you just need a really cool shifter knob.......but things are looking good.

Gas stations tend to be far between in Alaska and I was worried I wasn't going to reach the next one so at 120 miles on the odo I slowed to 55 and hoped for the best.
Made it! (whew) and when I filled the tank I discovered I could have gone another 10 miles... maybe.
So I stopped at the hardware store on the way home and bought a 1 gallon gas can that fits perfectly in one of the saddle bags.
I won't leave home without it from now on.
Hopefully I will remember to actually put gas in it!
on all my long trips I carry my 2 fuel cells and have room for a 2 gal fuel can , 2 gal is like 4 liters and the tank is 15 liters so almost half a tank then......

Is Bobby , a Miniature Schnauzer ? I carried my little fella (Hagrid) in the off side pannier. He knew if he swiped the 'Doggles' off, he wouldn't get to come for the ride - better chick magnet than a red Ferrari ;) - sadly missed :(
Bobby is a Border Terrier and a great buddy ;)
He wears a harness that hooks to me with a locking carabiner so that he can't fall off.
That doesn't stop us from both falling off when trail riding on other bikes though. :o

After modifying the bracket that came with the seat and still unable to put the seat where I am comfortable, this winter project is a completely new design.
First step was to replace the seat bolts that came bent and stripped when I got the seat.

Jaglite, I want you to know that last year after reading this thread and seeing the pictures of you and Bob out riding about, I figured I would become a fan of reality TV. I have my system to switch automatically to any channel that is showing "Alaskan State Troopers".. I am waiting till they announce over the radio to dispatch the Troopers with something like...."Crazy biker man" or "Biker taking selfies out of control" but so far nothing on the TV ......lol......

This afternoon I am driving two hours out of town to pick up a frame and parts at the powder paint shop, then driving another 30 minutes out for a lesson on zinc plating parts, then returning back to my shop to use my new plating system.
I had planned to put the third coat of paint on the Drifter seat mounts but when I checked the dry/recoat time I saw that I had read it wrong.
I thought it said within 1 hour or after 4 hours...
Nope, within 1 hour was correct so the second coat was fine, it is after 48 hours for another coat of color or clear. :-[
::) Ok so I can rest comfortable knowing you will not be charged for using a camera while operating a motor vehicle.....

Well I am normally tinkering or tweaking something on the bike I am sitting on my stool because I do not have a bike lift in my living room yet. I want to design one that once summer comes it will be hidden in the floor and level, not something to stumble around or over. I have a 34" TV in the living room so I can keep up with important issues in life, like the Hockey games, weather reports. But then them American reality TV shows are so good showing us how real Americans live......

When did this become about you, does anyone care if you like the looks of the tank bag, no not really, Does anyone care that you "think" a tank vest might be good, no people all understand that you are just the license, the operator, gas money and food man who is owned and regulated by Lord Bobby. So a nice platform for him to sit and stand on while out letting you take him about and you are along for the ride............

Jag, was the seat too far back for you?
I also have a Singh solo, which I'm not using at the moment (not for sale). I also had to rig up a different mounting bracket for mine. . not as good as yours though. My seating position was not too good, even after mounting the seat a bit forward. Every time I accelerated, I was getting pulled off the bike.. The seat just wouldn't hold me in place. So I put on my 2 up seat, and that worked out fine.
I didn't put many hours on the solo seat last summer because it wasn't located where I wanted to sit.
I will get to experiment with the new mount this summer and see how I like it.
I like the look of the solo saddle MUCH better than the flying 2-up seat, but the stock flying 2-up seat is VERY nice to sit on all day long.
The stock seat also makes an ideal place to put my backrest-bag.
I am currently searching for a plastic box of the right size to bolt to the rear seat loop.
When I find that, my wife will sew up a cover for it (canvas look) to hide the box.
Then I can strap my backrest-bag on top of that.
Such a nice bike to ride mile after mile on back roads 8)
I am almost done with all my projects for the bike, so once I get them done I will then take to task on a comfortable and proper deck for Lord Bobby's delight, I am thinking a nice level base with a nice carpet to keep his wee paws cool and something to grip on to. It should also be on a sort of pivot point so that even when parked the dock will be level. You should be thankful that Bobby even lets you sit on his bike and be the driver of said wonderful machine......

There is still snow on the ground and we will probably get more before winter gives up.
We usually get snow in early May and sometimes in June.
Actually the danger isn't the snow, it's the marbles on the road.
The gravel they spread all winter long to give us traction on the ice.
It is like ball bearings on the pavement and extremely dangerous in curves.
As part of my riding start I go to a large empty parking lot and practice very low speed turns to get the "feel" back.
At first I do a bit of weaving, put my foot down(or start to) but after just a few minutes it comes together.
(I do my practice at the start of every ride for the first several rides)
Part of my practice is hard braking, emergency stops.
For fun I do rear wheel brake slides on the marbles, and it is fun because there is almost zero traction and I can slide a long, long way with no tire wear!
But turning on the marbles is not fun, it is very stressful actually because there is so little traction.
The more the bike is leaned over, the more likely the front wheel will just slide out and you will be on the ground, and possibly sliding into the oncoming lane.
So, until the sand/gravel/marbles/ball bearings get swept off the road I do very slow cornering.
On bike projects, the new seat mount position is excellent for me and very comfortable.
I found a nice round leather bag that fits the spot behind the seat springs and covers the gap between the frame and rear fender.

I am still looking for the right size box to put on the frame rear loop to be able to raise my backrest bag up about 6".
It will cover the frame loop too for looks.
I want to leave the tank bag at home because I don't like how it looks on the classic Drifter style, but it is very handy for carrying things.
And the best part is that Bobby doesn't scratch up the paint on the tank with his paws since he keeps his front paws on top of the tank bag.
Robyn is going to make a tank bra to protect the tank but hasn't actually got around to it yet.
I just have to ask her how to change thread on her sewing machine so I can do it myself... and she will do it. ::)

I am adding a dash cam and GPS speedometer to the Drifter 8)
I have the same inexpensive ($30) dash cam in both our cars just in case of collision or something worth posting happens. It is not weatherproof since it is designed to be inside a car but I will just keep an eye on it when riding in the rain and if it is getting wet I will put it in my pannier.
The GPS speedometer is so I know what speed I am going since my navigator Bobby blocks my view of the tank gauge unless I lean over to look under him.
It is also an inexpensive unit designed to be inside a car with the same lack of weather proofing.
To wire them up I bought an inexpensive (notice the theme here?) panel that gives me 2 USB ports, a 12v power port, and a digital voltmeter.
It is designed for boats and comes with rubber covers for the USB and Power ports.
It took me 4 hours to wire the little panel up and find a switched power wire inside the headlight.
One thing I noticed is the colors of the wires in the shop manual (Clymers? Haynes?) don't all match the bike. I was looking for the accessory wires the diagram shows but my bike has no wire (the hot wire) of the color the manual shows for the '99 (J model) Drifter.
Eventually I decided to tie into the wires for my spot lights since they should have been wired to the accessory wires I was looking for but couldn't find.
That worked and all is as it should be now.

The GPS speedometer is the black flat box ahead of the panel, and the dash cam is on the windscreen.
The camera comes with a plug to go in the power port, the GPS speedo comes with a USB cable.
I might have been able to wire the camera directly since it is 12 volt but it was cheap and simple to buy the panel and plug it in.
Have you wondered why the voltmeter is showing 11.5 volt?
Yep, I didn't think to plug in my Battery Tender while I was trying to find a power source and had the key turned on for a while.
I didn't think about it until I was putting the headlight in and checked to make sure it worked.
Except that it didn't work.

Everything else worked.
But not the headlight.

Did I blow the headlight fuse while trying to find a hot wire?
I pulled each fuse out and looked at it, and tested it for resistance to make sure it was good.
All were fine but the headlight didn't light up.
I started the bike and the headlight came on.
Then I thought to plug in the Battery Tender to charge the battery and when I tried turning on the key, the headlight came on like usual.
I guess my Cyclops LED light need more power than 11.5v to fire.
Or, is there some kind of headlight switch that doesn't send power to the light if the voltage is low so you can start the engine?
That would be smart.
Now to figure out how and where I will mount the panel and speedo.
Ideally, I want them to be out of sight except when I am riding for a cleaner vintage look.
My first thought is a leather handlebar bag that I can put the panel and speedo in, that I would open when riding to see the speedo, then close when parked.
I will have to go to Amazon and see what I can find...
Very cool and good job, I am not sure I understand that you do not trust Bob to keep you informed of your speed, or you just want to see for yourself.....lol.......FYI the headlight on a Drifter 800 does not come on till you start the bike or bleep the starter....lol....I learned this the first winter I was working on the bike and spend a few hours trying to figure out why the headlight was not turning on......lol...live and learn and be thankful for good people on here who help you out.....

The headlight comes on after it starts and is running.
JagLite......this is just an FYI for you my Alaskan Buddy, I am now hooked and addicted to watching " Life Below Zero", "Last Alaskan" to see how people who live north of me do things.....and of course "Alaskan State Troopers" and been waiting to see the Troopers chase and arrest that crazy man riding about on a Drifter with a Selfie stick and a hound for a co pilot.......
I had to check my headlight as soon as I got home from work and discovered, as you know, that it does not come on when I turn the key on.
Since my spot lights are always on, or I leave them turned on always, it was the light from them I always saw when I turn the key on.
They probably use more juice than my LED headlight so if my battery is ever low I will have to turn them off before starting the engine.

Like many things the instructions are less than clear but with enough playing with it I was able to set the parameters I wanted, screwed on the sensors that replaced the smart caps I had on it and went for a ride.
It works!
I was surprised how the pressure and temperature increased when riding.
The front tire gained 2 pounds, the rear gained 5.
Temp on the front only went up a couple degrees but the rear went from 60 to 80!
The front cooled down almost instantly, the rear took several minutes.
I took the picture about 5 minutes after stopping so the pressure had gone back down.
I have them at 38 front and 40 rear cold.
Hopefully it will last.
What does Bobby think of this new fangled thingy on his ride?
I don't think he noticed it, he was having too much fun going for a ride after so many winter months. He sure does love seeing people in cars beside us.

I put the dual seat back on so that Robyn could ride with me anytime she wanted to.
That was one time all summer. That's okay, I just wanted her to know she is welcome to ride anytime.
Bobby doesn't want her to come because she won't ride with me if I bring him.
I am going to put the stock exhaust system back on even though the Borla system sounds so nice.
My "old muffler look" didn't appeal to anyone except me. :-\ So it goes.
But I decided to modify the stock system to hopefully let a bit more Umph out of it.
I cut the primary muffler open to see what it looked like inside.
It has a closed tube drilled with a lot of little holes where each of the head pipe inlets bolt to the muffler.
I considered cutting them off then decided to leave them in place but to cut a couple large holes in them to reduce the restriction more and let some of the sound wave escape intact instead of broken up by the tiny holes:

After it was all closed up and repainted I opened up the secondary muffler to see what it looked like inside:

Those tubes are straight through with no baffles. It is interesting that the larger tube they smaller tubes go through act as an expansion chamber because there is a hole in each of the smaller tubes to allow the pressure wave to go into the larger diameter pipe. Or something like that anyway. There is just one small hole (1/4") in the side of each through tube. I couldn't get a picture of that though.
So what is inside the secondary muffler tube?

Two long tubes that the two end tubes slide over that run almost full length of the outer tube.
I could shine a light into the far end (the inlet from the primary muffler) and it was easy to see from the end through the two long tubes.
The "figure 8" plate just guides the end tubes onto the two long tubes, it is not a baffle.
The exhaust flow comes into the secondary muffler and can go directly into the two full length tubes or around the tubes in the are up to the middle baffle plate that closes off the first chamber. Some of the pressure wave will go into the long tubes but most of it expands and goes around the tubes, hits the baffle and bounces back to the inlet. That's how I understand it working anyway, sound wave experts may know a better way to describe it.
The actual exhaust gasses flow through the twin long tubes and the length acts as a way to dissipate the volume similar to a long straight through exhaust compared to a short straight through system.
I considered drilling around the center baffle plate and removing the two long tubes, then cutting my Borla muffler apart and putting the core and packing in the stock secondary muffler... But I decided to just weld the end cap back on and see how it sounds with the modified primary muffler first.

My custom Borla straight through system weighs so little compared with the stock multi-piece system!
The stock pipes are heavy :(
But I can't include a sound comparison because after I shot the video and removed my system I discovered that I can't find the head pipe flange collars to bolt the modified stock system back on.
I know I have them, I searched for hours with no success. ARGH!
I will keep searching but I may end up installing the Borla again.

since they are available for about $25 each from Kawasaki and you need 4 of them, I definitely would look on ebay if nobody here has some...any model of Vulcan 1500/1600 stock clamps work....I put nomad exhaust on my 1600 classic engine I just put in my Drifter and they worked perfectly....part numbers are all the same.

I looked at Bike Bandit, Revzilla, Partzilla, and two other new OEM parts sellers and they all show the parts as "Unavailable".
The 1999 and 2000 Drifters used a different part number than all the other 1500 & 1600 bikes.
And they were half the price!
But they are unavailable so that doesn't matter.
The other bikes use part no: 18069-1161.
Kawasaki uses part no: 18069-xxxx for many bikes of various displacement so I don't know if the bolt spacing and flange size changes or if it is I.D. maybe that is the difference?
After searching online with no answer for what the difference is I am hoping it is that they just have a different finish, chrome or polished instead of plain steel.
I am watching Ebay for a used set.
There is currently two listed and I have a question sent to one seller so maybe I will be able to buy some soon.
And hopefully they will fit correctly!

yeah, it's only the difference in finishes....the V&H pipes from my 1500 with the built in flanges bolted right up to my 1600 engine....nice and snug...but then I swapped them out for the nomad exhaust. The V&H longshots with all three sets of tips will be posted on the classifieds here shortly.
The exhaust ports on the heads for both the 1500 and 1600 are exactly the same diameter....I check with a caliper.

The flange clamps arrived and I bolted the modified stock exhaust on the bike and set up my video camera.
I tried to put the camera in approximately the same locations as before.

Modifying the chamber to allow free flow of the sound waves made very little difference to the sound or volume of the stock muffler.
I am now thinking about going back and cutting out the two tubes running full length of the "muffler" pipe.
I believe the two inner tubes are keeping the sound waves from expanding by funneling them all the way out at about 1" diameter.
I think allowing the sound waves to expand as they do in the 5" diameter Borla muffler gives it a deeper sound.
Of course the sound absorbing material Borla uses also helps with the tone as well as the volume.
But the muffler chamber under the swingarm is already diffusing much of the sound waves before they enter the "muffler" pipe so it won't need much, if any, sound suppression.
Always something to experiment with, eh?

I was surprised that it isn't very loud, just going through the bell muffler really takes the volume down.
My theory is that it allows the sound wave to expand and loose energy with just the small hole for the wave to come out of. Much, much quieter than my neighbors Sportster with short straight pipes.

I've been riding this summer instead of checking the forum.
I only had one ride last summer because I had a low speed high side on my street tracker and made the mistake of reaching out to break my fall (on dirt). That dumb mistake dislocated my shoulder and put me out of action all summer. I tried physical therapy but after 6 months my therapist and doctor agreed that surgery was required. That happened in November and I have been doing exercises daily since January to regain movement and muscle. This summer I am riding!
I did bolt on the backpacks I bought to use as saddlebags and they are working out great.
Instead of just one hole like the original small leather bags, the backpacks have several areas of different sizes.

I am using the stock saddlebag brackets. I cut off the shoulder straps and waist strap on the backpacks and sandwiched a UHMW cutting board cut to fit inside the backpacks to put the bolts through and hold the bags in place.
I have a 1.5 gallon gas can in the left side bag and spare gloves, lunch, water, and assorted stuff in the right side.
There is a lot of room for camping gear and the bags expand much further out as needed.
I'm happy.
Well, after 22 years my shocks need to be replaced, one has blown the air bladder and now oil comes out of the valve.
I just started searching for recommended replacement shocks and I've found several threads with various suggestions but so far I haven't found anything definitive.
Some like the Progressive (444?), others the Hagons from England, and others various Harley shocks.
I don't want anything shorter than the stock 13" shocks, slightly longer might be nice for cornering clearance.
I will keep searching but if you have suggestions or links to threads I will appreciate it.
