OK, I think that others may have the same thing happen, and it's not every time I turn off the engine, but it makes this like whiz sound almost like the starter is kicking in or something – can anybody shed some light on that? It bothers me, kind of sounds like it's not good for the thing, but I don't know how to prevent it from occurring, and as I said it's about maybe every fourth or fifth time I shut the motor off. I hope it's nothing, but it is a bit annoying and disconcerting because I don't know what makes it. ???
Mine does that too, but only about every 20th time.
Sounds very much like another bike which I know is to do with the starter 'clutch' thingey.
take a look and see if your fan has kicked in. I know someone with a water cooled engine and theirs does it almost every time they are shutting down. Oh and it is a Classic 800......
That's a good thing to consider but actually no, the fan isn't running when I shut down and it does it anyways, occasionally, as I said.
ok that was my stab at it, now if you can sort of isolate the location it might be helpful.....
Yes, I'll pay more attention to that sound next time I hear it and try to determine its point of origin. Given that the starter is located in the lower front of the motor, it's possible that isn't what I'm hearing, because this sound seems like it comes from maybe like towards the upper part of the engine or something--that's just my stab at it ;D
I am going to go out and start my bike tomorrow for the first time in 2 weeks and so will see if I can hear anything......
Kind of a "zing" sound on shut down?

Yep, that's the sound.
My 1500 has always done that. It's a surprise when it doesn't.
Any idea what is making that sound?

Nothing concrete, but I suspect it's the started clutch gear spinning down. I'm not worried, since I've not had any trouble with anything, and I have almost 103,000 miles on her now...Supposed to be 80° here tomorrow, so I'll go put on another 300 or so...
Fair enough. I'll not worry about it either unless it starts grinding or something.
