Title: Find of the year...
Post by: greenbarn on August 24, 2015, 22:21:14 PM
I recently found what I consider a good deal on a used bench vice.  A local fellow passed away about a year ago, unfortunately.  He used to build trailers, so had a nice shop set up.  I knew this vice was in his shop, mounted on a stand that (I assume) he built.  I asked the widow if she wanted to sell it, and we made a deal.   This is the biggest vice, I think, I've ever touched.

Anybody know much about Wilton vices??

The vice itself weighs 139 lbs.  The stand weighs 104 lbs alone.   I had to cut about 6" off the brace going to the wall so it would fit in where I wanted it.   I cleaned it up a bit, and put some "machine gray" on it.   I think it turned out just swell....

It has a 6" jaw, and opens to 10"!   IT's bolted to the floor with 1/2" anchors, and lag bolts to a post in the wall....  Pretty sturdy- much more so than my old bench vice, mounted on the bench.

I'd like to know more about the history and age of this thing, if anyone knows much about it...  It's evidently a Wilton 600.

It was worth a fortune until you painted it.. ::)  naw, don't know much about it but it looks like it has seen some use. That gray paint reminded me of the military for some reason.

if it moves polish it, if it stands still paint it, and paint it either white or grey no other colour.

What a find!

Wilton vises are excellent, and expensive, but they last forever   ;)

You kidding, now it's "restored", and probably worth a fortune .... ;D
Not so much worried about resale value, since I don't intend to sell it...

Yea, I think the stand was actually worth what I paid for the whole package.
