Title: Passenger Backrest Fitment Question
Post by: Donkey on August 10, 2015, 06:54:55 AM
Hey gang...

This backrest was marketed as fitting both an 800 and a 1500, as seen at the bottom of the ad.

I know that the horseshoe bracket is different on both bikes, as the frame is different, but can anyone confirm whether or not this backrest will bolt to a 1500?

Thanks...

I looks right, but I don't know for sure about the bolt holes lining up.  It'd be easy enough to reweld new tabs if it didn't line up.

That looks exactly like the sissy bar back rest I bought from Custom Wings in Belgium.

Rewelding might be the answer if you have access to the equipment but what about the width of the unit to the seat? Not sure how wide the seat is on a 1500 vice an 800......

So what are you saying...  That guys with 1500's have wider seats?!  Maybe I'm just carrying a little water weight...  I'm so hurt.

Ok let us get back on topic here and deal with Donkeys lack of a backrest, this is more important then all of you worried over my backside, Donkey would like to take his wife and children for rides on his really cool Drifter and he requires a backrest so one of you 1500 riders who has a spare sitting about dig it out and offer the poor lad a deal on it so he can have a happy Drifter family and perhaps show up in WI for the regional gathering in 16 at Sparta. Come show some class here for a guy.....

Well, I'm not going to be able to help there.  The best I have laying spare is a seat rail for the 2up.

Seat rail you say?!  As in "grab rail", or the seat stay that goes under the seat to hold the 2-up on?

I'm looking for that seat stay, the one shown in the battery case blow-up diagram...

What?  Wait!  So I didn't use the exact right terminology for the part, but I still offered a valuable part, which, I might add, was more then you offered, and I'm the bad guy?
Title: Re: Passenger Backrest Fitment Question
Post by: CDNRatMan on September 05, 2015, 10:33:33 AM
You offered him a part from a 1500 for a 1500, I do not have anymore parts for a 1500, but when I did I offered them to everyone and finally sent them to GB who has or had them. I am at least on a hunt for a luggage rack back rest for the lad, and not offering him parts he does not need and calling them something he needs and getting his hopes up and then smashing them..........because you used the wrong term......

Title: Re: Passenger Backrest Fitment Question
Post by: pcarrell on September 07, 2015, 09:04:42 AM
OK, so the first one, Uqhuq, is simply gibberish according to Google: https://www.google.com/search?newwindow=1&biw=1280&bih=675&q=Uqhuq&oq=Uqhuq&gs_l=serp.3..35i39.5230.6803.0.7906.5.5.0.0.0.0.90.403.5.5.0....0...1c.1.64.serp..1.4.318.0.WB2dV_-Cp84

And Muktuk is frozen whale skin and blubber.  Thanks anyways, I'll have a Snickers bar!

No, but I've been thinking that a few minutes in a metal shop should create some brackets that will mount up and can be drilled for a genaric backrest.  Been thinking about how I'd make it.
Title: Re: Passenger Backrest Fitment Question
Post by: CDNRatMan on September 07, 2015, 16:40:25 PM
Well with your talent and your size you just need a flat table some blocks of wood for a template, heat the round stock and bend it around in the jig. Then you just grind down any welds and then leave as is and sell them to members at a reasonable price, giving a cut to the forum to maintain it, some to your favorite church and all the good will to yourself. If I had the talent and space I would do just that ......
Title: Re: Passenger Backrest Fitment Question
Post by: pcarrell on September 11, 2015, 12:16:36 PM
A bracket, made up something like this one, would be all you'd need, and then you could mount any generic backrest you wanted by just drilling a couple of mounting holes.

That's exactly what I'm thinking about doing if I can't find a backrest and luggage rack. I just need to make some room in my cluttered shop so I could work in there. LOL

The Drifter backrest is somewhat of a unicorn on the internet. I passed one up several years ago on eBay because I didnt want to pay 300 bucks. I thought I could get it cheaper. Fast forward to this past July and I got a beat up one from Maine for 201.01 form eBay. Lol. Good luck as I also tried that uK site. It will let you place it in your basket but they will reply that it no longer is available.
