Hello everyone, I have been reading your site for years. Have gotten a lot of information that has kept my Drifter on the road since I brought it back in 1999. I currently have 66,000 mile on her and have done nothing but maintenance and changed the rear shocks because I wore the stock units out. As I take what I consider one of the finest bikes on the road into her golden years, I was wondering if there are some tips other high milage folks have noticed that can keep her going. Also I need a good looking muffler since my has cracked at the inlet pipe. Still running but makes an annoying chatter. P.

You're a little further along in milage then me, so I can't help a lot there, but on the exhaust, can your pipe not be welded up?

I have a spare stock muffler, in very nice but not perfect condition I would be willing to part with. The pipe, itself is solid, but the chrome has some small black spots in it. Looks like road tar, but it won't come off. Make me an offer....it would be a 10 minute swap for you...comes with the mount. As far as "high mileage" I'm 30,000 ahead of you.
I had it welded once but it is now cracked under the little bracket that holds that tapered shield between the front pipes and the muffler. I'm sure it will eventually break but I don't want to stray to far from home lest it becomes a trip killer. On another note; the German models had a band type catalytic converter. Do we have a way of contacting them to see if someone has one laying around? Thanks, P.
