This whole experience is going to be a LOT of fun...
The two-bit bakcground... I still consider myself a new rider... first bike came along in '07. The love affair with the THOUGHT of riding really started in the early 90's, but there was always an excuse... no time, blah blah... so the trigger wasn't pulled for years.
In '99, I won a jacket that said "Indian Motorcycles" on the back, so I looked them up on my dial-up internet connection... And fell head over heels with the newly recreated Indian Chief, but it was out of reach. I still didn't know anything intelligent about anything at that point, and by the time I finally realized that the excuses were just that, Indians were no more, and the used ones were rare and expensive and I just wanted entry level to see if I would even enjoy riding at all... along comes my 800 Classic.
I know and love that bike inside and out, but a friend introduced me to a friend a couple of years ago that rode this thing that had me picking my jaw up off the ground... everyone saw it in my eyes... what IS this thing?! A Drifter? WOW... MUST HAVE. Match made in heaven. Indian looks and style, Kawi reliability that I had grown passion for.
Fast forward to this past fall and he finally agreed to part with it when he went to HD, and I am in SUCH a happy place!!
Now I need to do what it will take to make it "mine"... and that brings me to the wish list. Feel free to add, subtract, explain, offer, or review any or all of it as you see fit... opinions welcome.
-It has a Corbin 1-up... I want to keep that but I'd also like a stock 2-up to swap on/off for the kids...
-Any other 2-up opinions welcome (I understnad the brackets are as expesive as the seat)
-It had a heavy duty custom steel bracket on the right side... sidecar or trailer? That's gone. Those are my guesses what it was.
-Has a windshield. Too high for what I like. While I debate a quick release batwing (opinions welcome), I will cut it down to about 14"
-I'm a big fan of the "way it was supposed to look" for this bike. The colour stays, there will be little mods to this one.
-But I do like the V&H Longshots. I'm used to a little more bark with the 800 and V&H Cruzers and debated removing some baffling...
-I'm worried removing baffling will affect backpressure and run reliability. Opinoins, again, very welcome
-Anyone have a power commander? If so, reviews and why?
-Rear luggage... it has bags, and a modified rack over the fender but something has to change. The rack is too low and has contacted the fender and rubs against the seat... and I'm a little bit of a perfectionist. Any "removable" or OEM luggage rack options welcome
I'll read as much in here as humanly possible because I know the drill... most of this is probably in here somehere... It's the time I lack to read like I once had.
Thanks gang... nice to be here!

1st off, welcome aboard and second...pics! Would love to see your bike.
When I read your post, I smiled because I felt the same way. I picked up a 2001 Drifter last year as my 1st road bike and love it. I always knew I would enjoy it but never thought this much.
I've added alot of "bling" this year and really enjoy the looks even more. Franks leathers makes some incredible products. I get complimented on the mud flaps and rear fender bib all the time and of course, mentioning the emblems and front fender ornament produced by Donna Zambini goes without saying. When I stop for gas, I literally have people walk up to me asking about them.
The one thing I didn't like about the stock bike was the exhaust. It was just too quiet and from a safety standpoint, dangerous. I routinely saw people jump or get scared when they realized I was along side them; they had no idea I was there. I bought a set of Vance and Hines and can't say enough how much it has made riding more pleasurable and, safer. Yeah, I guess they're loud but I really enjoy it. No more guessing on my rpm's and again, from a safety standpoint, other drivers know I am in the area and are never surprised. The other huge safety thing I did was throw on a Signal Dynamics headlight modulator. Watching the reaction of other drivers is incredible. People would routinely pull out in front of me in the past; no more. I can't count how many times I have seen a driver start to move forward then immediately stop to wait for me to go by. From a safety issue, it was the single best purchase I have made. I plan on buying another one for my brother.
You mentioned cutting the windshield; good idea! I cut mine so it was the same height as my nose while sitting. What a difference and again, makes the ride so much more enjoyable. Last year, I hit a fog area while riding into work in the dark morning hours and I was literally blinded for a few seconds and hit to sit up as straight as possible to see over the windshield. Dangerous lesson learned...
Keep us updated and would love to see your progress!

There are a few options for 2up seats, but the brackets are a must. These are some of the seat options offered over the years: http://www.vulcandrifterriders.com/drifterseats.html Some of them are no longer made, but might turn up second hand. You might find this page interesting: http://www.vulcandrifterriders.com/forum/index.php?action=links;cat=33 Also, besides looking on Ebay for the brackets, you can try here: http://www.ronayersmotorcycles.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=389864&category=Motorcycles&make=KAWASAKI&year=2001&fveh=8987
Quote-It had a heavy duty custom steel bracket on the right side... sidecar or trailer? That's gone. Those are my guesses what it was.
No tellin'.........most trailer hitches I've seen on Drifters seem to attach to the passenger foot peg mounts and to the frame under the seat, as the whole rear of the bike moves too much to mount to. As for a side car mount, maybe look in that section of the forum and compare to what you see there to determine if that's what you have.
Quote-Has a windshield. Too high for what I like. While I debate a quick release batwing (opinions welcome), I will cut it down to about 14"
Your shield should come up to about your chin or so at it's highest. You can go lower, but I'd not recommend higher. As for the batwing, there are a few options. Some good info has been gathered here: http://www.vulcandrifterriders.com/forum/index.php?action=links;cat=35 One thing to remember.......Drifters use the same front forks as a 1500 Fuel Injected Classic, so while there are some subtle differences, most fork related parts for those bikes fit ours pretty well. That means stuff like this is on the menu: http://www.recklessmotorcycles.com/classic1500.htm
Quote-I'm a big fan of the "way it was supposed to look" for this bike. The colour stays, there will be little mods to this one.
Other then stock Drifters, I don't know if there are any two that are alike! Make it "right" in your eyes!
Quote-But I do like the V&H Longshots. I'm used to a little more bark with the 800 and V&H Cruzers and debated removing some baffling...
Check local laws reguarding this. Also keep in mind laws of states you might want to visit. I know for example that Colorado has very strict noise level laws concerning motorcycle exhausts.
Quote-I'm worried removing baffling will affect backpressure and run reliability. Opinoins, again, very welcome
Can't help ya there.....sorry!
Quote-Anyone have a power commander? If so, reviews and why?
With just the V&H pipes you don't need it and probably don't want it.
Quote-Rear luggage... it has bags, and a modified rack over the fender but something has to change. The rack is too low and has contacted the fender and rubs against the seat... and I'm a little bit of a perfectionist. Any "removable" or OEM luggage rack options welcome
Yeah, that rack sounds like it has to go. There was the Kawasaki Fire & Steel rack, but the only one of those that I've seen mounts to the 2up seat bracket, so it's no good for a solo setup. Other then that, it's pretty slim pickin's! Wompus Racks used to make a solo rack, but I'm not sure if they still do. Then you can always make your own setup. I did, using only basic tools (an angle grinder with grinding and cutoff discs, and a drill) when I wanted to mount an old Shovelhead tour pack to my 1500. ( http://s83.photobucket.com/user/pcarrell/library/Drifter/Tour%20Pack?sort=3&page=1 )
They say that the bike is just the downpayment on the accessories, and truer words were never spoken!
Welcome to the forum!
Welcome to the madhouse. Always fun to read of others first passion when they finally get the bike of their dreams. Now the fun begins. Making it yours. When it comes to these Drifters, creativity is the key. Most of the trinkets and baubles you see on others Drifters are adaptations from other bikes. or scratch built, thus a lot of individuality emerges. No two are the same. Have fun, and keep us all up-to-date with pics and stories! We'd love to see it!
THANKS GANG!!! Lots of exaclty the kinds of insight I was looking for and I'll answer in a bit... I've been doing more research... and have more clarity...
And I REALLY have to take some pics! I took ONE the day I got it and she needs a bath first before I take any more!
The guy I bought the bike from is a good freind and still full of insight but the forums are global... can't beat that.
Few things to keep in mind. The 1500 is based on a Classic. There are differences, but a lot of the parts are interchangeable, or almost so. Some of the Nomad bits will work, too. Places like Partzilla and Bike bandit will give you part numbers and diagrams. Partzilla also has an "also used on" function for part numbers. Sometimes that helps, sometimes not. example would be fuel tanks. Because of the paint scheme differences, the same 5 gallon tank, that would bolt on any of the Vulcans is not listed because of the colors....Personally I like making or adapting parts rather than just a bolt on...

Under the persons avitar pic is something that looks like a word balloon. Click on that and you can do a private message.
So far... Some decisions...
Exhaust... I've grown to really like the subdued but deep note of the 1500 burble. That combined with the varying noise restrictions in some provinces and states means the baffles are going to stay as is.
Since she runs perfectly, and I won't be changing the backflow pressures with exhaust alterations, a power commander is off the list.
More soon but just checked in and love the time you've taken for replies... Thanks gang...

Thanks! Blind, stupid or tired but I see it now!
;) if it is not broken why change it, and if you like it then leave it alone, does not matter what others say or think it is your bike. As an opinion here and you will get a lot of really good honest answers but then you have to do what you want and can afford.......or like some lads like the Missus says you can do......lol.....
Yes... "if it ain't broke don't fix it" applies, big time. I have all the parts to "scooterize" and "grampsize" my 800 too but could never do it... just runs too damn well. Same with this Drifter... not worth messing with a perfectly tuned bike for a little more grumble. And it seems every day the sound grows on me to the point of not wanting it to be anything else...
There's a place here in Ottawa that will make and form windshields... I'm debating having one made rather than cutting it down... I've done that before and though it's relatively easy, it's finding the time that's a challenge.
The prioroites are shifting to a luggage rack, and a way to fix that deep gouge in the rear fender... I know some trips are going to come up this summer and the saddlebags just won't cut it!
Lashing anything to the rear fender is just not possible with how unique these things are...
Ah in the big city of Ottawa.....are you going to make New Liskeard?

I don't think you'd want to strap things to the rear fender.
Since the rear fender is plastic it'd only hold maybe 10lbs of weight anyways, besides, it'd be well shaken!
As for the luggage rack, Wompus Rack's has you covered: http://www.wompusracks.com/kawasaki-rack.html
I had scratches on my rear fender too, right on top like you have. I had these guys make me a fender bib and a matching tank bib and it solved the problem real quick. https://www.chilhowee.net/fender-bibs.html
No kidding on strapping to the rear... I think the days of picking up a dozen eggs are done...
I contacted Mike at Wompus, he replied right away. Looking like that's the surest bet.
Sounds like an invite RatMan! And sounds like an awesome ride too... Haven't been much past North Bay in that direction but no reason why not!
There are some awesome riding roads this way, and even over on the QC side there is a few really good rides. 105, 117 to New Liskeard would be an awesome ride. I was stationed in Petawawa for 5 years and so have covered a lot of the roads between there and Ottawa, a lot of nice back road riding. 6 hours from Ottawa to New Liskeard, the Freedom Ride is something you have to experience in your life time........check out the link down in the Canadian section.
A saddleman tail bag straps down nice to a two up and has the added benefit of becoming your backrest.
Sad when you don't have the time to take two bolts out of a seat to see if there is a horseshoe barcket under it...
Either way, so glad to have met this group, already have a line on a seat! My boys will be thrilled... at 11 and 13, they'd be crushed if the couldn't go for rides any more and I'm just not sure I can keep the 800 Classic in the stable (my only option for 2 seats at the moment).
I'm already resigned to removing and replacing the seat back and forth as needed, because the Corbin is comfy and I have nothing but bad experience with the stock seat on the 800, but that's ok... it's about my boys.
Rat, I have no doubt there are awesome roads up there... and now I have an excuse to find 'em!
You can reach under the back of the seat and in the middle of the back there's a small bolt that attaches to the seat through the bracket. If you feel it there, you've got it. No need to disassemble anything.
Took a minute to grab some air and a few pics...
ok so there is such a simple solution to your dilemma about the boys. One simple word and your issues are completely done........
SIDECAR.......
buy a side car and you can move both boys around and have fun doing it
Thanks Pastor... I'll check it out!
Rat... I know right?! Still not convinced that it didn't have one... the big steel bracket I took off the side makes me wonder...
No horseshoe...
The pic came out pretty good... good enough to show why the rack replacement is necessary. Hoping most buff out, but there is one deep groove that doesn't show here.
This is her pretty much the way I got her. She came with a windshield and the backrest for the Corbin. For scooting around town, all that comes off. I found and bought the original black Kawi engine guard, but so far it's still wrapped in the packaging...
She had a badly dented right side air cleaner cover but I got lucky on eBay finding one in Canada, brand new at a great price. All three dash indicator lights were damaged or missing and that was my first purchase, but so far that's it!
The rear fender is the sorest spot...
(I've never referred to a bike by gender before this... but with all the skirting and looking as sexy as they do, kinda comes naturally!)
That rack looks like an older Harley FLH rack; same one I had on my '76. If you're handy with tools and torch, you could always fab one up....I ended up doing that, could not find one that I wanted on my baby. Finally built one, love it, but can't see it as I have a huge fringed leather trunk on it....funny....couldn't find one I liked, what did it matter if you can't see it.....oh well. I know its there.....

That's exactly what it is. I was lucky enough to get the bike from a friend, so I have a little bit of it's history...
It might have done better had the bolts been shorter... it's one of the too long bolts that gouged the fender. And as for the contact... that may have been a one time huge pot hole in a construction zone with a full luggage load... And I did find that the shocks were dialed down to "1".
This thing is still on the short list too, since it installs on the seat post of a corbin (or mustang) backrest, which I have.
I like removeable. Only need it for the road trips... And it comes in black (or raw) as well.
Donkey, what's the capacity of that thing?? I'd be interested in that too. Got a website?

Yessir... search on eBay: LR2 Luggage Rack for Mustang & Corbin Removable Backrest seat Dual Tour ( 111589937025 )
Very reasonable I think too, given how hard options are to find. They say they recommend 20lb but "many customers have reported carrying MUCH more with no problem"... and to their credit the close up pictures make it look pretty well built.
And they offer a skull too...

I'll look them up. 20 lbs, a respectable amount for most of us. Now, probably not enough for somebody like Ratman to put that big hockey bag of his on there.... But enough for a box of beer....
Just playing with new filters... Man that tire is dirty. Sorry.
Rear fenders are getting harder to find. There's always the Oldy's fenders (fiberglass molds pulled from a Drifter http://www.badassglass.us/fenders.html , but your's looks like it could be repaired, and it'd need a repaint too. The fender bib may be the cheapest solution for now, but that's your call.
It looks like there isn't much space between the fender and the seat/rack. If I remember, that rear suspension has a swing of about 5 inches, so you need 5 1/2 inches clearence to be safe.
four boxes of beer in my hockey bag and some extra stuff........and because you might not know a box of beer here is 24 bottles, not that tinny can stuff.

I don't think it's shot beyond repair, I hope, but I have to find someone that can fill and finish a deep gouge in plastic. It's not all the way through...
And you're right, it's only about 4" off the fender and clearly that isn't enough.
I've even thought about that rack of Ted's, but I just can't see shaking the crap outta my stuff, nor am I a huge fan of drilling 4 holes in the fender!
I figure one day I will have the fender fixed and I'd rather not have to deal with the 4 holes in addition to what's already there... the holes wouldn't bother me if I wasn't going to get it fixed but the fenders are such a large part of what makes this bike what it is.
And... Ted's rack won't work with a 2-up, which is also something I want the option of.
Almost forgot... I got this little guy for Christmas.
Everyone's bike is their thing... Me, I'd do this not to try to Indianize her, but to recognize the tribute she was meant to be...
But it's a fair debate!
I am thinking a good body shop in the Valley area should be able to fix that for you. If you are going to go with a 2 up seat then fix your rack to the level of the bottom of the seat, like I did.
I have never followed a 1500, but I did follow my own bike on a ride one day and truly amazing how much the fender on an 800 moves up and down. Yet once you are riding how smooth it is with the 1500 spring and a progressive mono shock really nice and smooth........
Quote from: CDNRatMan on May 22, 2015, 14:56:19 PM

And that is EXACTLY what caught my eye the day I saw my very first Drifter. Turns out that is the Drifter that became mine, I just didn't know it for years yet. At the time, as much as I'd loved Indian styling, I didn't yet know the Indian had a swing arm mounted fender either. And that is also exactly why I want that fender to be perfect!
Engine guard installed today...
I like a beefy front end, and I'm a tall guy so I like my forward highway pegs on an engine guard for long hauls. Now that the guard is on, the pegs are next (did I miss that on the wish list?!) Black of course...
Scored a great deal on this one. Brand new, OEM, in the original plastic wrap, all hardware included, $50 on eBay. It's always worth hunting and waiting if you aren't in a rush... Started looking in the fall and got this about a month ago. Being able to ship conveniently to a US address doesn't hurt.
That's pretty cool! Good price too!

Yes, REALLY happy! I was watching one forever, brand new as well, but way more... $150 maybe? $200? I was still ready to pull the trigger because this in an access I really like... but I knew I didn't need it til Spring. And suddenly this one popped up! Crazy deal.
I had to order mine from motorsloop in Belgium, there seemed to be none anyplace for a 800.....but got it and am happy now. Just waiting now for my Drifter shifter.........

Yes, that just RAPIDLY climbed very high on the list. When I first got my classic I had come across that and then forgot about it... wasn't the bike to do it on. THIS one is, and I was going thru the mods on this site a couple days ago and found it again... LOVE IT! I just studied the directions... drooling...
well stop drooling and try and get one......lol...
What else do you have on the go with the bike?
Be patient on the fender Donkey, I had to replace mine as I broke the back 2" in a trailering incident, took a few months but was able to find one, in Gooseberry so no painting was required. I'll throw the old broken one in with the seat if you want lol.

Hmmm... 2-up seat, highway pegs, luggage rack... If I don't do it slow and smart I'll spend myself out of being able to afford the gas. But if ANY bike deserves a hand shifter, it's these...
Quote from: moosewing3 on May 23, 2015, 22:19:22 PM
...Gooseberry...
Makes me laugh because I have never brought a bike in for service until this one... Blew a tube and my dealer changes them for $40. I can't take my own time to beat that price.
But they asked me the colour since this bike wasn't on file, and I couldn't bring myself to say anything other than GOOSEBERRY!
I looked at my receipt and it said red... How disappointing...
Better shots of the new engine guard...
Thanks for not chewing me up and spitting me out over the condition of my tires in the first pics. Problem corrected.
(No, that's not a slash on the fender... Reflection or something!)
We've all seen tires MUCH worse that that...now, unless the picture is distorting it, you better address that speedo cable before it breaks....
Those speedo cables have a tendency to break. Replacing with a Nomad cable fixes the problem as it's a couple of inches longer.
Thanks guys... It really does look bad in the picture! Must be the angle or distortion because I'm sure I'd have seen that. I also cleaned the hub so I was all over that area... I can't be that blind. I appreciate the heads up though and will check tonight for sure.
The beauty and benefit of a forum...
Looks ok in the first pic I took... But it's too large to post. Have to look into how to shrink a pic on an iPhone...
There's an app for that!
Ok here is how you keep the tires clean and never have to bend your back or move your arms to keep them clean. The hardest part is for you to go to Canadian Tire and buy the following, Mr. Clean Magic eraser sponges, and Spry Nine. If you can find Scrub Daddy sponges it also helps. Then you go home with your purchases, and do the following:
Fill a med size bowl with warm water,
spray the Spray Nine all over the tires and let it soak a few mins if You have a jack this is super easy.
if no jack then you have to do the tire cleaning walk down the driveway.
After the Spray Nine has had time to work a bit the start to scrub gentle with the Mr. Clean
the really stubborn stuff will come off the white walls. You should at this point be sitting in your chair
the beer is cold and the sun is shining but of course you are in the shade.
Oh yes you have 3 boys, one for each tire and the youngest to be the gopher.
See really simple and super easy. I do this when needed but then I have to do it because I have no kids.
Thanks for the tip... Always looking for a way to make something easier! I'm actually not a true "clean fanatic"... I will always choose riding over cleaning. I actually felt a little awkward when this was done, because when it's too clean, it looks less "enjoyed"!
But, like the title of the thread says, it's new to me and I want to start with a blank slate... Put my OWN dirt on her!
(Just 2 boys... No gopher and none coming!)
ok so you are the gopher and they do the cleaning.......
Pretty sure my risers are not OEM... I have 4" up 1" back, but the giveaway is they have SAE bolts. Anyone have a pic of what they should be on a '99 1500?
This pic was to show the F&S windshield brakets, but it shows the stock risers too.

Thanks. That's exactly what I thought. So now, like my 800, I assume the triple tree was bored out for the new SAE risers...
Which I guess is okay, just means I have to look for SAE risers.
Scootworks makes risers that are pretty popular on these bikes. Look for Phat Risers and Phat Risers II. A lot of people use them on these bikes because they have good specs and you don't need to change cables and hoses.
http://www.scootworks.com/shop.cgi/page=partskawhandle.htm/SID=1432648895.14171
Thanks Pastor, I'll check it out. Prefer not to change cables/hoses unnecessarily... But I have long arms and not a big fan of the pull back. With a straight riserand bars tilted forward I think I'd be more comfortable.
Got a good suggestion for keeping the fork bag from sliding down and rubbing on the fender?

Yeah...take the damn thing off. There is no good reason to have such a thing, and all it does is mess with handling

It's off! There WAS one on it. I don't have one. But I like a small pouch for essentials on long trips (usually a phone charger, tire pressure gauge, ear plugs and aspirin) and usually use a windshield pouch, but on this bike the pouch is so close to the risers I can't get it open and closed very easily.
And... A fork bag would let me keep that stuff handy when I take the shield off.
Might do a shaft pouch instead...
But your not wrong, I don't like the wear marks on the fender.

I used some small black zip ties and zipped them to the light bar. My bag is too big, so I need to get a shorter one, but you can just make out the zip ties in this pic.

My service manual finally arrived.
We have an online manual too if you'd like. It's even downloadable!

If you can move the fork bag to handlebars or get windshield bag setup to replace it for small items. I don't have a shield (have to stay cool in hot Texas sun) but hers a pic to help. A small side bag is nice as well.

Got it, and love it, and THANKS!!! I actually do have the service manual but I like the digital version too... that way you can print just the pages you need and throw them out when you're done and they are grease covered...

Honestly, if I didn't need the shield I wouldn't have one on either, just for looks alone, but getting caught in the rain or with a 20 degree temp drop means it comes on the long trips and off for the short ones.
The guy I got the bike from gave me a nice little pouch he wanted to use as a side bag and never did... I'll see what I can do with it!
NCC boy here is my bag and it's location and my tool box, if you need ideas........lol you can see them in person on the 6th.....

Donkey, do you have a pic of your risers?? The Scootworks risers have a special stud in them - the bottom half retains the standard metric size, but the top half is SAE. Maybe yours has a similar setup?? If you haven't already, check the size on the nuts under the triple tree to see if they're metric - the standard ones are 17mm. I just had mine off (Scootworks Phat Risers) and verified the nuts fit the stock OEM riser studs, so that's how I know.
BTW, I have a couple sets of OEM risers for sale in the "Classified" section... a black pair and a chrome....
another thought.... IF your triple tree IS drilled oversized, you could still use a bushing to be able to use the OEM metric risers.... Just a matter of finding (or making) a set to fit....
So Ratman put his tool box out on the fender, while I moved my rectifier up under the radiator and filled the hole with my tool box on a custom bracket. Just proves how different and creative these bikes are, huh? (Gotta remember to make that leather drive shaft cover soon!)

Love the ideas... And the creativity... I will answer the rest when I get a chance, but in the meantime, here's what the risers I have right now look like:
You can see that the latch holding my windshield pouch closed is jammed up tight against the riser clamp, and the riser clamp is one solid piece, not two pieces.
;) I had a nice windscreen bag, but once I added the risers I had the same issue and so my bag was moved to the front engine guard, and I sort of like it and now want a second bag for the other side. I also filed the space with a set of speakers and now have tunes on a long trip. You can only go wrong if you don't like it otherwise it is fine.....and you have lots of people to ask for ideas and opinions.

... Me, I'd do this not to try to Indianize her, but to recognize the tribute she was meant to be...
" recognize the tribute she was meant to be" - I've always tried to think of the correct verbiage to express my feelings about this topic and then you nailed it!
From wiki:
The Drifter was the result of a discussion between Ken Boyko, Don Emde, son of Indian legend Floyd Emde and John Hoover of Kawasaki. Retro motorcycles were becoming the rage and the question was posed "What would a modern up-to-date Indian look like and what kind of technology would it have?" They had Vincent Renaldi do a drawing and enlisted Denny Berg of Time Machines Inc. to build such a machine. They gave him a 1500cc Vulcan motor and the drawing and turned him loose. The final result was a motorcycle called the "Super Chief", which was taken to several shows in 1996/97 and was such a hit with the riding public that Kawasaki took the Super Chief to Japan and put it into production. Due to patent law they couldn't use the Chief moniker and up until its release the name had not been settled on. The Drifters are intended to be a "tribute" to the 1948 Indian Chief and so closely resembles the Indian Chief of the late 1940s that the uninitiated mistake it for an "old" Indian. The Super Chief was featured in several motorcycle magazines.
An article in Rider magazine quoted the creators as saying that "the object of the exercise had been to marry classic Indian styling with contemporary technology in order to create a motorcycle which one might have expected Indian to manufacture had it still been in existence at the time the project was launched". In replicating the nostalgic look of the Indian, the front fender light, rear luggage rack, and leather fringe were deliberately omitted. Three years later, the team revisited this theme by creating a classic-styled police motorcycle.
Tribute... ABSOLUTELY. That couldn't be said any better.
In"met" my bike 3 years ago, but only got it his past September. I read a LOT in the mean time, including here (lurking, didn't join until I had something intelligent to contribute... Sorry that hasn't happened yet) and that Wiki article. I also read the Denny Berg interview on here... And as mentioned in my original post, have always loved Indian.
Now, because most people I know don't know too much about bikes, I will introduce mine as a Drifter but that might as well be Greek, so I quickly follow that up with "it's a tribute to a '47 Indian Chief", and then they start to get it... It helps explain the valanced fenders which, since they can be love or hate, give them credence, purpose, definition, reason. Then, even if you hate them, you "get" them.
I will always honour Kawasaki and never pretend it isn't, but I respect and appreciate what they tried to do and did very well with and its a why this bike couldn't fit me any better.
And to make sure those on the border really "get", I keep this picture I found of a fully restored '47 Chief handy... Beside mine. Then there is no argument. Im going to take the bags off and take more shots.
It's like having an Indian, without all of the insane prices and pesky maintinence issues.
It's a classic looking bike that you can just gas up and ride.

This I will keep an eye on for sure.
I just rotated my bars up as high as practical without twisted wrist syndrome, and I'll have to get some miles on her before I get a feel for it. I have found that something so simple changes a lot... I actually feel small on my 800 now after I get off the drifter becasue I did the same on that. But black, short risers might fit the bill.

Agreed that a little investigation is involved. Man I wish summer was longer, it will be gone before I know it! I was about to say I feel bad that I feel like I wasted winter, but I didn't really... a lot of this comes from actually riding and getting a feel for what I want. Winter is for searching, but I didn't know what I was searching for!

That is the truest quote that goes along with ANY mod! I actually found that if I reach UNDER the clamp and undo the bag clasp, it's not so bad. The shield bag, like I mentioned, is for "long trip essentials", so I can deal with the occasional inconvenient clasp. And it's only an issue when the shield is actually ON, and when I actually NEED something out of it.

Being dumb... Isn't that the only way to break your own stuff?
First of all, my garage is packed solid. I'm a small general contractor so that's my "warehouse"... And it's pretty tight in there. I had the two bikes side by side, and at the time it was so tight the front wheels were straight just to keep the bikes from leaning too much because of the lack of room... Shaking your head yet?
Down on my hands and knees, trying to pull the baffle out of the V&H Longshots just to see what condition the packing was in... And it got stuck. So I'm pulling. Hard. I'm not well braced, it's awkward, and I'm already thinking this is dumb...
When it started to tip.
Didn't go far, but the right side cover lined up directly with the highway peg bracket on the 800, and punched a star shaped hole in the centre of it. I'll post pics...
It actually isn't horrible looking but it has to be fixed. I want to start fresh and make everything the way I want it and that can't stay...
And all that keeps me sane is knowing how bad it really could have been.
try to help here......

You won't let me ride if I don't. I can tell.
(Pulled the trigger on one from eBay... Cross your fingers!)
That's not so bad. At least you have all the pieces, and it would appear that it's just a crack or two. A good bodyman, who's used to working on the new stuff with plastic parts can fix that up and you would never know it was damaged. Might not be cheap, but better than trying to find some unobtainium. Even a replacement wouldn't necessarily be the same color, so paint is always going to figure in.
That's one thing I know very little about is plastic bodywork (like I'm such a genius with everything else). I will see what I get from eBay... I wasn't smart enough to ask around here first, turns out I should have. It's hard to gauge paint quality in eBay pics so I'm only cautiously optimistic, but I'm not afraid to buff light scratching.
That's the whole fender dilemma... It's in relatively good shape except for the deep gouge and I'll have to get a pro on it 'cause that's not me.
Well there has to be a body place in the Ottawa Valley that can fix plastic with all them yuppie cars in the area..........
I'll talk to you if you don't have it fix,................................................................. just hope it is dark outside.........
I'm not even sure you'll talk to me because I still have to shift with my foot...
yea but you have 2 Drifters.......so you are still one up on me......

So... I do consider myself somewhat eBay savvy... I know my way around, I can find what I need, I know how to work it... BUT... I'm smart enough to know that it's hard to show paint.
I didn't buy the cheapest one, and the pics, many of them, looked ok, but this is the pic I took when I got it:

Transferred the GPS mount to the Drifter. WOW, I felt so bad taking a part off one bike and putting it on the other. It was weird.
Jeff, that looks LOADS better than your first picture. that stuff must be pretty good.
Sounds like you fellas have yourself a Canadian Drift-In in the makings. Make sure to take plenty of pictures!!

I totally have schedule mixed up, I am finished early tomorrow so will try to meet up with you guys at some point.
Well... That was an adventure. Never had a Ride for Dad weekend quite like that... Rode the 2+ hours to Kingston on Friday in torrential rain, and woke up ride day with the stomach flu the kids had the previous week.
I made it to the parade but that's it... No poker run, straight back to my buddy's house and slept for a few hours, leathers, boots and all.
A few of the boys rode home with me when I was well enough and got a bit of a ride in at least... And in the end I raised my personal best for prostate cancer research so not all was lost. Didn't get to meet any forum members/Drifter riders, sadly, but that's just an excuse for more rides this summer!
I never even left here, was raining in the morning and well into the day at 1400 I called a no show, I am a Candy A$$ 5 hours in the rain, just did not excite me, and then Sunday was forecast for rain all day ...so another 5 hours in the rain......I could not subject my old and tired bike to that kind of treatment......
My B-I-L thinks he saw a Drifter there, but he was not sure and it was black not Gooseberry.
Ahhh the beautiful gooseberry ;) Excellent choice choosing a Drifter . You'll find to love this bike just like the rest of us on the forum . It takes time, and a whole lot of patience , to find those hard after accessories , but personalization is the funniest part of owning these rare machine's . Enjoy and welcome to the forum . I've attached a couple different set ups I used .

No condemnation from me. It's like I always say, I'm not afraid to ride in the rain if it starts up, but I don't go looking for it!
So on the topic off "differences" (I'll bring this one back to my own thread)...
The specs for a '99 say oil, 4.0L w/ filter change, 3.5L w/o filter change.
The sticker on my engine case says 3.1 w/ filter, 2.9w/o (3.5L complete dry).
That's a pretty substantial difference... That's less oil than my 800. Thoughts?

The easy way to "get it right" is to always fill your new filter, so the engine doesn't run dry on startup, then,
with the bike level, look on the right lower engine case and find the small glass site just below the oil fill cap. Your level should be just a shade above half way up the site. Once done, run the engine a minute to circulate everything, turn it off and let it sit a few minutes so everything drains back down, and check the level again and top off if necessary.
Yessir... agreed completely. Just fascinated that the specs are so different... and so much less oil than the 800.
I would tend to default to the factory sticker on the case and double check the window, and I'm so anal I actually use a funnel with meaurement markings on it, but I'm a curious person!
As a side note, I also use a FilterMag <filtermag.com> on the filter to pull any metal dust out of the bloodstream, and a magnetic drain plug. Anything to keep that 710 clean!
I have a long, flexible strip magnet that I wrap around the outside of the filter and just leave it there. I figure that it makes the whole filter a giant magnet, and that's a good thing!

I supposed you couldn't have told me that 5 years ago before I spent the $ on a filter mag... :-\
Go to the Walmart craft section and spend a dollar or two and you can get the magnet. It's the same kind of stuff you use for refridgerator magnets. When you change filters you just take the magnet off of the old one and put it on the new one......simple.
>:( Don't go to Wal-Mart, go and buy it at the real man store Canadian Tire, and use your card, get some food and car stuff and even clothing and you will be satisfied......
No... Instead I go to a web site, pay premium dollar in U.S. Funds, add shipping, and end up with probably not much better than what you have, if any. :-\
I do like it though... Wicked strong, but ya I could have done it way cheaper.
And wait... I think I got it when our dollar was actually HIGHER than the U.S. Dollar!
I wouldn't have had to go anywhere. I have a ton of that crap around the house...
Just because...
Some visors for the lights would be nice, a Drifter Shifter, some small bling to stand out....lol.....but very nice.....is that at your home on Sussex Ave.
:o Sussex... LOL
No... A client's house. Out measuring jobs today... One of the very few days that my job and the weather work together for me to be able to ride during the day!
Which probably means it will start raining around 4-ish...
Quick question... I just discovered that there is a bracket/harness missing that clamps the wiring harness that feeds into the headlight. REALLY glad I noticed because the wiring bundle was being pinched at the steering lock... pending disaster.
Anyone have a pic of what actually belongs there? (1500, left side frame at steering head)
I'm a big fan of staying true to stock for stuff like that, but I may just fab somethign anyway... just want to know what it actually looks like.
It wasn't obvious either. Just coincidentally caught my eye... those pretty, colourful wires weren't showing, there was chewed up electrical tape covering them. It was the frayed ugly tape that caught my eye. I took a few ripped pieces off and notices the wires underneath had been pinched but not broken.
For now, 'til I get some wire wrap around it...
My wiring passes through the same area and I just retape it every year.
Did you think to order part #92037 and put it into the hole I marked and see if that helps I know your a Master Carpenter but sometimes......you just need a little help......
I did consider it... Still am. My local dealer is pretty good, may even have one... But that hole is threaded and I can tell there as something once there so I used it.
This is the latest version:
Decent work for a carpenter, when are you coming up to measure my deck and talk about the work your doing for me on that....
Aw... thanks!
I was there this afternoon. I didn't see you around and it was quiet so I didn't want to wake you in case you were napping, so I left.
Side note... CRAZY amount of loose connectors on this thing... The primary case bolts were almost all loose. The gas tank bolt under the seat was missing. There was only one of two seat bolts on it. There are threaded holes all over it that are missing bolts. No idea what they were or if they were important but I'm working on it. CHECK YOUR FASTENERS!!! I know it's common convo to check them, but it can't be overstated enough.
I got cocky once a few years ago and just assumed I'd know when I had a loose fastener that was important, until I found my steering head bolt physically loose and turnable by finger tips...
Oh, and I discovered that it did have either a trailer or sidecar at some point... there is a 4-pin flat trailer wire connector hiding under the tool box cover... unless someone tells me that was stock?! It's a good, clean install...
I am certain, Sir, that I detect the scent of a package of Cheese Nips in your saddlebags.
