I don't know how it started, but I have developed a set of riding goals for myself that I have managed to stick to every year for the last 52, except for 1998, when I had a heart attack in early October, and had to stop riding for the year. A minimum of 10,000 miles every year. To that end, I try to get a rough calculation for day/week/month so I can achieve the goal without having to scramble at the end of the year....Today, I did a little 180 mile ride (one tank of gas, not empty yet) which ended at my garage with this picture. I'm hoping that I can get to 102,500 on the Drifter by the time I have to stop for Winter.....
Nice! Seems your goal is going much better than mine. It started out well and hasn't gone anywhere since. I've been like 750 miles this year so far, of my 10k mile goal... In a month I'm going on a 3500 mile-ish motorcycle trip too. That's going to be brutal with how little I've ridden.
Well I am not trying for mileage, but more to have a fun and really memorable summer. I plan on attending The Ride For Dad in Kingston, and here in North Bay, both events for prostate cancer, then the Biker Reunion in New Liskeard for cancer research, then the Ride for a Cure, here in North Bay again for cancer. Then to attend Drift In and met some of the people who I have been dealing with here. Then leave Drift In and ride up the east part of the US and cross over to visit my sister in Kingston before coming home. Then depending on funds and time, I might take a ride to PEI and to go see my buddy FredakaMike, in NS. If not then perhaps the Lake Superior tour might be in the offing.
Everybody has a different idea, and that's what it's all about. I love to ride. If it weren't for winter, I wouldn't own a car, at all. Certainly, if I lived on Hawaii, my goal would be quite a bit different. Living out here, on the edge of the great plains, I look at the miles not so much as barriers, as new places I haven't been, yet. I haven't ridden in 3 states, Hawaii, Alaska, and colliefornia....Two of them I want to see, one I don't...so I won't.
I left this morning on what was supposed to be a little 320 mile jaunt to Minneapolis MN, and back. Starting on Wed. the temps have been in the 80s, but now, of course, it's the weekend. 20 mph wind from the N.E. (pretty rare around here), 50 deg, and rain....I got about 50 miles or so into the trip and reconsidered. I did make a mileage milestone, however...
....and still going strong.....built Drifter Tough.....
I dunno...it's not like I haven't been trying, but I just can't seem to get any real miles this year...FINALLY turned 96,000 on the clock this afternoon...only 3,500 for the whole year so far >:(
::) my short term goal this summer is to make it to Richwood 0hi0 and then to met himself the guru Troll.......
Got 46 mpg on this afternoon's little trip....

I'd be lucky if I had even 350 miles this year. It was cold so late, and once it's warmed up, it's rained so much any day it's NOT raining, I'm so far behind on outside chores, mowing and such. basically this riding season has sucked in Ohio....
Keep it up Troll, Hit the 100K !!! ;D
GB, I feel your pain! It's not any better in Indiana!
hmmm...it's all relative...today I graduated from crutches to a cane! Yippee! Still two more weeks for the cast and then physio. My goal is one ride before season is over! :'(
Around 2" of rain around here Friday...
I think my feet are beginning to grow webbing between my toes....
As of Friday 2 different farmers, one slightly NW of us and one slightly E, told me they each had 8 inches and 9 inches since the previous Friday. Then it rained most of the day here Saturday - but didn't bother me too much - we were in Cleveland most of the day car shopping and visiting my sister, who lives there. Drove the van, because it was raining when we left and forecast to rain most of the day - it did, but didn't extend up to where we were for all that long.
Have you walked that killer hound since she dragged you and broke your leg?
2 days of sun and shining, hope next weekend is as nice so Troll and I can have a nice ride to the Biker Reunion.
I'd like to blame Dolly but I'm afraid I have to wear this one myself. MikeakaFred continues on dog duty at this point.
So I take it because you are laid up and not able to ride that Troll and I will be going to the Biker Reunion just us and not you and for sure not Mike without you............ ::)
On the way to our regional ABATE meeting, I finally reached a goal I had set. About a week later than I had hoped....Counting up.....to GOTCHA!!!!!
WOW!!!!
Wow is right... Troll, you ride your bike(s) more than the total miles per year I get on all of my vehicles put together!!!
Congrats, Troll! 8)
you ride or rock...lol...
Way to go, well played!
I've been riding the "W" a lot lately. I have a goal for it, too. I just need about 1,500 more miles on it to make 25,000. I bought it with 9,000 on it in 2009 for my 60th birthday. I just changed oil for what should be the last time this season in the Drifter. It's pretty warm here, but by the end of the month, the weather will change, so I switched back to 10-40. 100,075 (60,000 since 2010, when I put it on the road) on the odometer. No more big rides planned for the year, just a few 350-400 milers...I need 2,500 on the Drifter, too...so just another 4,000 and I'll have met all my presets!
On Aug 2nd, I turned 100,000, today 101,000, and I haven't been anywhere since Drift-In! Well, I did go to Anamosa, IA, but that was only 350 miles...
My Drifter turned 10,000 miles this week. It is an 01, so it is finally broke in. I had the valves checked and all of my fluids changed this year. I am taking a moto-camping trip with it to Hell's Canyon the 2nd week of September for 5 days.
I put quite a few more miles each year on my Honda Silverwing Maxi Scooter. Quite a few reasons for doing so:
1. Anonymous bike. No one sees me coming or going on it.
2. Fuel injected. It starts, it goes, no choke.
3. Under seat storage makes it a grocery getter.
4. Step through design makes it easy to mount and dismount.
The Silverwing is really my daily driver. I always enjoy starting and riding the Drifter.... but it is a different deal.
I used to put on quite a few miles each year. I don't know if it is old age or what, but it seems like I have to have a place to go and a reason for it before I leave the house. After over 40 years of riding, I still enjoy riding the bike, but I have to have a reason to go someplace.
For over 50 years, it's been the ride, not the destination, to me. I'm glad I don't live in Hawaii, for example...no matter how beautiful it is, there are only so many places to go!
A lot of times, I just hop on my bike and ride somewhere to be riding. I also set some goals to explore some new places.
I expect, riding in Hawaii would get boring after bout a month; the views experienced, however, would always be refreshing and one would never tire of them.
Ok, then I need just 420 more miles this season to make my 10,000 for the year...
