Title: What's wrong with this picture???
Post by: greenbarn on February 07, 2015, 19:15:48 PM
Customer's van came in (grand caravan) running badly.

Anybody see a potential problem here??

He said it had been running poorly, so he put in new plugs and wires, and it still ran bad - had a misfire for sure now.

Now, we had pulled the one spark plug wire off the front center plug when I had taken this picture - it did not come in with the plug wire off.... so that's not it.

ok first thing comes to mind is firing order but then I can not see the wires and do not know the order so not a visual thing...and can not see anything else jumping out at me....

I'm gonna' go out on limb and suggest putting the plug wires on correctly for starters... Think they might be a bit reversed... lol

We switched them - end for end - first, but it still had a dead miss.   Found 2 on the back bank to be reversed.   That made all the difference in the world.  We've had lots of cases of plug wires on the wrong order, but I don't think I've ever seen one with the plug ends on the coil...   It was kind of amazing it ran, but it did.  The ends on the plugs were laying on the exhaust manifolds, due to the bend in the wire being on the wrong end - so it was actually a good thing they were in the wrong order or they would have probably been left alone until it burned 1 (or all of them) in half and ruined the wires.   Oh well, easy fix.

This one would have been easy to put on wrong - Chrysler uses a weird setup - it's 1-3-5 on the front half of the coil (just like the motor configuration), but it's NOT 2-4-6 on the back, it's 4-2-6 if I remember, which would easy to get wrong if you weren't aware.

It's quite strange the way HT leads can move about like that while the car is just driving to the supermarket, the answer is to swap the leads back and then sell the customer a gremlin bell, otherwise it will happen again on the drive home.

John.

I never even looked for that issue but one would think even with limited understanding and knowledge that the end you took off should be the same as you put on.....now a smart person with limited ability one would have thought he went to the local Tire place (small town USA and the place is also the auto parts place) (yes I watch TV so I know) bought his wires and went home and swapped them one at a time ......duh....just saying....

Yes, one at at a time is the safer way to approach that project.

John, I guess I hadn't thought of it that way...  I need to stock an assortment of gremlin bells... 8)
