I'm looking to take a ride from New Jersey to Florida for Bike week when it comes and I want to get a driver backrest for my stock 2 up seat. I was wondering if anyone makes one or am I better off just making one myself?
You will have to make your own, unfortunately. And, I don't recall seeing a mod like that...
If you have a stock 2 up seat as you say, I used to make my back pack into a back rest, and it can come off really fast. I then bought a sissy bar for the passenger, and when on a long trip alone I use my Sissy bar pack and it becomes my backrest, and is as stiff as I want it to be. Check out the sissy bar packs, or at least a day pack for a back rest.

you could just take a passenger with you---
with proper instructions, this can make a nice cushy back rest.

I could use that shirt either way! I guess I'll be buying some material and fabricating a backrest.
if you are riding two up then you will need to fab something, if you are riding solo then like I suggested use your pack as a backrest.I do it all the time and works well.

Yes, but I'm pretty sure (99.999% positive) that I wouldn't be allowed to buy or wear a shirt like that.... :o

This is my version of backrest for my 2002 800 Drifter. I have been reading this post as I have been working on my version of a back rest and then a drivers back rest. I have fabricated my own from simple metal from Lowes. I will be posting some pictures and descriptions if anyone is interested. The first pic shows the back rest bracket with a handle bar bag attached, the others are of the finished passenger back rest. (//)
Next I worked up a drivers backrest for when I ride alone. Again it is fabricated from a piece of 1/8" x 1"1/4" cold steel from Lowes. I made a mock up from alum. which you can see in the pictures. The steel one is identical just more stiff and I drilled and tapped the lower bracket holes for adjusting the rest. I made it from two pieces to have the ability to adjust it. It simply bolts on where the passenger rest bolts with or without the passenger rest. Obliviously you cant use it for 2 up riding but I can rest my back on the wife when 2 up riding. The back rest are hand made and sewn from furniture grade materials from Johannes in the mall here. There are plenty of resources on line to show how to make these. I can post some close ups if anyone wants to see more detail of the brackets.
Here is the finished version of my driver backrest. I love it so far and the new support form 1/8" steel is very solid. The great thing about this setup is the back rest come off with 2 bolts, and the support is held on with 4 bolts. Nothing is welded or cut on the bike so it can go back to original condition in about 5 min.

Looks good. Currently working on one for my bike which will attach to the seat rail. Of course the first thing I need to do is fab the seat rail.
