Title: Sabotage! Need to replace speedometer gauge or housing
Post by: Ricardo on October 06, 2014, 02:14:41 AM
Hello people

I could use your help here. My bike was recently subjected to sabotage; some d***head smashed up the glas to the speedometer gauge.

My insurance doesnt cover the damage, and a new housing will set me back some $400.

I've been looking through Ebay for a 2nd hand one, but come up with a couple of different variants and I'm not sure which one will fit. The bike I have is a Drifter (of course...) 800 C1. Some of the hits for 2nd hand speedometers I get on ebay says they're VN800A or B...will those even fit?

They are different part numbers, but not sure if they are interchangeable.

Here is a suggestion for you, remove the speedometer and look carefully at it..

I think that with care you can prise the top rim that holds the glass off, then you can simply take it to your local glazing firm and they will cut a new glass for you..

I know that this is possible because my speedo has a mph dial with the word Indian on it but the odometer is in kilometers so I know it is not the original dial for this speedo.

hello,
A Vulcan 800 speedometer will work just fine try to stay as near same year Fit is the same . Only difference will turn signal canlser will not work. You will have to use manual on / off like
the Vulcan 800 . this the only difference. Drifter 800 is front wheel cable drive , Vulcan is rear wheel drive gear drives are different ratio ,but speedometer work okay. Just remove damage
one hook up replacement do not change any thing else m.p.h will be accurate  exact as before . Very simple change out . Refer to manual how to remove speedometer .you will be back
on the road in no time.    NOTE  TO KEEP A RECORD ON MILEAGE RECORD EACH METER MILEAGE ADJUST THE DIFFERANCE .

RIDE SAFE

Man, thanks a lot for your replies!

I ended up buying a new used housing from Germany that is specifically taken from an 800 C1-drifter.

I just got it home yesterday and it seems reasonably easy to change. However, the odometer reading is of course totally wrong. The gauge instrument itself seems to be detachable, but is there anyway I'll be able to change the odometer at all?

You'll likely have to swap out the odometer number spools as they make those pretty tamper proof.
