Some research and some idea stealing from Drift-In, and I have a new project. That's all I'm gonna say, until I begin it. The stuff I need is from India, but I think we could all benefit... Greenbarn has a head start on me with the "same" thing from Viet Nam...
You guy's going all Hindu on us?
Bollywood......
I won't spill the beans, then, Sir Troll...
Have you done anything with your's yet? We can keep Ratman in suspense for a long time with cryptic messages!
Not yet, haven't had a chance to do anything yet.
I'm thinking of superglueing some thin strips of rubber inside the clamps....There, let him try and figure that one out....
QuoteWe can keep Ratman in suspense for a long time with cryptic messages
and this would bother me why? I do not own a 1500 so I have no reason to worry what you are doing on your 1500's, if you were tweaking or working on a 800 then perhaps I would be interested.
When I win the lottery and the people on my bus list join me we will go and buy me a 1500, but then it would have to be a 99 nothing else will be good enough.
But thanks for thinking of me
I will also continue to listen to your very good advise and ideas, and after finding out GB had lead me down the garden path over the rear shock I am removing him from my bus list and moving his wonderful Missus up 2 notches.
Hey, pal, I never lead you down that path... I encouraged you so that you would get it done, and the rest of us could then benefit from your expertise and wisdom. I think you said that's one of the best mods you made, anyways......
OOOOOPPPSSS...woke up the sleeping Canadian BEAR...not beer!...The new project will fit either size Drifter...there I said too much, already...waiting for my part from India...DHL says it's in Brussels, Belgium now, so maybe soon....I promise to relieve the suspense as soon as I have something to take pictures of.....AND Mrs. Greenbarn is a terrific cook!...Those roasted veggies were great!
Beer, who said beer...I'm in........
Pics, or there is no double-secret probation project. ;)
Ok,ok....you figure it out:
Front roll bag or a backrest, only things I could see anyone wanting for that beauty
Yup...she's a honey. Gave me some ideas...and Greenbarn has a gift from the owner....My example is still sitting in Brussels, Belgium. Should be arriving from New Delhi next week.
Leather fender flaps?
Actually, I have a subtle change coming up on my bike in the next two weeks. I think it IS subtle. I'll post a pic when it's done and you can all guess what the change was.
ok seems that GB and Troll want to mess with me, and I did nothing once again, but tonight I'll send them some speedo pictures, and so I have a few ideas and so I am sorry to the gentleman in the photo, but I used him as my template......
#1 front fender guard because I did not see many of them and they are hard to find,
#2 Axle Covers
#3 foot wear for riding
#4 manly shoulders and arms to handle their rides, and to look good in short sleeves.
can not imagine either needing help with all their technical skills and abilities....
Should I let the cat out of the bag? Hmmmm let me think a minute....I'll just say this: it's an antique Vespa Motorscooter part...
For all that is good and holy please tell before Ratty posts the speedo pics
Speaking of vintage parts.....anyone looking for some old school hard bags? Same as a '70's or '60's Harley FLH would have, but slightly smaller; they are the bags from an old Sportster, with brackets. My buddy in Dawson Creek up here has a pair looking for a bike to live with. In good shape, need to be painted. Next time I am there(could be a while, it is 3+ hours to get there) I will get pics if someone is interested. Not sure what he will want, but he is real easy to deal with.
moosewing right now you are on the bus list not the speedo list, but that can change......... ::)
GB is between the bus list and the speedo list right now........
# 2 then is my guess
I'll be good
and this is not a threat...but remember I know were you live and how to get there.....lol.......
I'll get the Erinsville or Roblin ATV gang after you.........

I just want to be very clear about this........
I HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS!!!!! :D
Ah but I feel the PC touch here somewhere.........
Ok, ok....it's the...no I can't it's fun keeping everybody in some kind of suspense. Trust me, when I do a reveal, it will be worth it....but only if you like chrome parts...

I think I have a pretty good idea, but I shall not say.
Not me! No way!

ok that leaves me out...not sure why I was drawn into this then in the first place, but ok......
DHL says my mystery Vespa part is in Cincinnati!
at WKRP?
They are going to drop it like a turkey....
If you hurry on this, Troll, you'll undoubtedly get yours done before I do mine - I haven't had time to do anything on the bikes since getting back. Mine is most likely waiting for the winter project list....
I'm pretty stoked about this, so I'll get it done fairly quickly. I think I can still use the tip I currently have.
Just checked, the part has left Ohio, next stop should be Minneapolis...then here. Maybe by Friday.....
DHL real time tracking has it on it's way to LaCrosse as of 9:05 am! I'm SOOOOOOO exited!
I'm guessing the front fender guard. It looks pretty close to some of the old vespa ones...
AND......the winner of the fur lined bath tub is.....
Definitely the front fender guard ;) My thing is I'm not sure it's going to look good with a fender tip under it as well . Sooooo , looks to me the fender is going to have to be filled and repainted .
Wish I could of found one of these last week before I drilled holes for my tip :P Oh well I'm liking the bling ... bling of the tip now 8)
I have it. I can't believe it... I ordered it on the 21st form India, and now 6 days later, I have it in my hands. If the P.O. could get letters and packages to my house from the other side of town as fast, they wouldn't be in financial trouble....DHL ROCKS!!!!...Now to the part. It's typical Indian quality....it's ok, definitely not show chrome. I have a lot of modding to do to make it fit the way I want. I held it in place with a couple of small bungee cords, and it looks ok with the tip...It has a 1 1/2 inch disc for an emblem in the center....it had a funky blue sticker that fell off right away.... I have a few ideas, but I'm right at the end of a pretty lucrative IT job right now, and I start my new part time job tomorrow afternoon, so I'll have to wait until the weekend to begin the process. I'll take a few pictures of it tomorrow, and see what you guys think.....
Ok, I'll post some pictures of the bumper. I'm now looking at this as a long term project. The welding on the bumper is, well, ugly, and when I try to "adjust" the angles of the bumper, the chrome flakes off. The metal is very thin, and dents easily. I'm going to make this a winter effort so I have time to fit it the way I want. I'm making some new brackets to hold it on, and the one in the front, which is currently no centered and welded on crooked will have to go... When I get it the way I want, I will get it re-chromed....This is either going to be perfect or I won't use it at all. At least it was cheap!
Do you have a chroming place nearby? The nearest to me is like 5 hours away and really expensive, but I do have a powder coating place in town and he is really good and his prices are good.
I did find one on a UK web site, not like mine but more the style you are talking about, you'll have to take some pictures of how it actually mounts. Good luck with it.
No, I don't want to powder coat it black...wouldn't go with the rest of the fittings on the bike. As a temp. alternative, I'm going to check out some brass spray finish, and see what I can do with that...might do the M/Cylinders and such like that, if I like it. There are a few chromers around here, all chrome is now expensive due to stupid EPA regs. My friend, the truck body shop guy might be able to sneak my bumper into an order going out from his place. Bumper quality chrome is fine with me, ince it is 1. a bumper, and 2. I don't need to turn it into a show trailer queen!
Know that black would not look right but was just wondering, but there is some decent rattle can stuff out there to give it the chrome look too. Let us have some before and after pictures.......
I got back from running errands this morning, and dummied it up with a couple of pieces of wire. It might not be as big a job fitting it as I had first imagined. I think I'll remove the rings on the sides and file/sand off the crappy welds. I'm going to keep the front badge plate and put a nice concho or coin or something in it. Remember, I'm going for the late 40's, 50's look...What do you think?
ok understand now how it mounts, that was the part I was not sure on, also understand it is just temp right now, but is the lower rail (tube) going to be in line with the fender lip? Perhaps a tank badge modified to fit would look good on the front in the center there.
Also that front hub cover is just plain detracting from the new bling so perhaps you should take it off and send it to me and I'll make it stand out on my black out version.... ::) just a thought.......But I like it but then I am partial to fender guards as we know.
LOL ..... Ratman ..... Rumor has it Malcolm has your hub cover and well , I'm still on the hunt being the fabrication is just to costly for him to produce without charging phenomenal price's .
Troll in all honesty adding this bumper rail just makes the front look to busy imop , of course .

That is the nicest bumper design I have seen yet. I made a brake pedal for my Harley, took it to a friends body shop, he put it in with a Peterbuilt front bumper he was sending out for plating. Cost was cheap, like you say. Looking forward to seeing the finished item. Also a link to the supplier.....
As you should know well by now D1 never assume nor listen to rumors, they can be hard on you. I am just trying to help my good friend Troll and un clutter his front end and I'll take the hub cover and just use it till he decides what he is going to do.

......all in the name of helping out a buddy, right?
of course, I think if he needs to tone down the front end, then the hub would look fine on my bike, any issues, not on my end.
Yeah, I think it will look a bit more "busy", but the nice thing is that I can remove it without anything showing....I'm still thinking....tick tick tick tick...
Well if it will not have any left over marks of it being there then try and see what you think, and if not to your liking sell it to D1 or someone else.

look...What do you think?
Since you asked.... I really like the bumper. But, I still can't get over thinking it's too much combined with the fender tip. Maybe it's just me, but it seems to detract from the chrome tip. And, then, along with your other fender decorations (which I like, btw) like D1 mentioned, it starts to get a "cluttered" or "busy" look, jmho.
In the end, it's how much you like it and the look you like - if you're going for a "decked out", "premier", "special edition" kind of look, it's definitely going to get you there.
I think I'm going ahead with the fitting and bending I want to do so the lower rail follows the contour of the fender. When I'm done with that, and weld on some mounts (straight) I'll dummy it up again and see how it looks...Harleys have chrome fender tips and chrome bumpers all at the same time, so maybe it's all the time I spent with them that's clouding my judgement... If I keep the rings on it, maybe I could put some round amber reflectors on them and remove the stock oblong ones....tick tick tick tick...
Ratty I already installed the fender tip , or I would have installed a fender rail . You see when I was searching for a fender rail I could not find one . The only thing left on my search list is a simple hub cover . Now I can live without the hub , but if one should come across a few and willing to share the where abouts , sure I'd be interested . However , I'm not going to nag or hound anyone for there goods .......
Troll I'm not sure if it's the tip or the top fender trim around the fender light , but when you add the rail it gives that busy look . Something to play around with . I'm sure you'll figure something out , besides like you said tick ... tick .... tick
