Title: Rear wide white wall recommendations?
Post by: Dcardova on August 11, 2014, 19:24:04 PM
Probably a redundant topic....but I am replacing a worn Metzler Marathon '880 on my 2003 800.  I was thinking of ordering the same tire (came with the bike when I bought it) but if someone has a good recommendation for a rear wide white...I'm all ears!

I know around here it is harder and harder to find WWW tires, so I will stick with my 888's because I like them and they work for me.

That is one finely decked out 800, and yes they do need them WWW to look their best....

I just switched from a Metzler 880 to a Shinko 777 about 2000 miles ago, and I have to say, I like the Shinko's better.  The grip seems better, as does the 2up comfort.  So far, my favorites have been the Continental Milestones, because they simply last forever, but if these Shinko's wear well, they might be a new favorite.  They are more grippy then the Conti's, so I'm wondering if it's a softer compound, which could affect wear.  So far, I'd suggest that if you're bigger into corner carving, the Shinko's might be the way to go.  If you like to take it easy, the Conti's will last forever!

I found the Metzlers to be VERY picky about pressures you run.  I was 4 pounds down on the rear and ran that way for maybe 75 miles before I noticed, and that rear tire was very obviously cupped.  At 13,450 miles the center tread began to pull away and it was replaced.

I could not find a shinko in the required 140/90-16 in WWW.

I believe I read somewhere (i.g. on a tire fitment list) that the 150mm tire is even listed as an accepted alternative size.
