Title: Crankcase Question
Post by: Slytherin_Drifter on June 23, 2014, 16:43:07 PM
Ive got a 99 drifter 1500 that im currently rebuilding due to transmission problems. im doing a dry fit to make sure everything fits well but it looks as tho my cases may be warped or something. theres a slight gap on the bottom of the crankcase. im having a friend check it out later just in case. my question is can I use a case off of a different bike or will i have to find one that came off or a drifter specifically? Thanks in advance guys. im just trying to get this bad boy running again

The crankcase set part number for a 1999 Drifter is 14001-5374.  I looked up a 2003 F.I. Classic and it has the same part number.  The Meanstreak and Nomad from that year have a similar part number.  The 14001 part is the same, but the rest of the numbers are different.  I don't know if that's due to a finish or color difference, or if these's a design difference.

You can look up specifics here: http://www.ronayers.com/Motorcycle-C355234.aspx

It's not very usual for a case to warp, are you sure the surfaces are both perfectly clean..you can check for warp on a metal surface by resting it on a piece of glass and seeing if it rocks or trying to insert a thin feeler gauge under the edge all the way round.

One of those cheap houshold hand held steam cleaners is great for removing old gaskets.
