Fitting new rear disk to wheel --
If I use a 8x1.25 mm die to clean loctite off the threads of a bolt, do I then use a 8x1.25mm tap to clean loctite out of the bolt hole ?
The bolt was carefully wound 1/2 way in to the die by fingertips, then finished using the handle . No problems.
However when I used the tap on the holes, i have some fine swerf/swarf (?) although it feeds in smoothly by fingertip then handle.
BUT the newly cleaned bolt feels a little wobbly in the newly cleaned hole. I did (1), and now I' going to wait for an answer. Google & Wiki doen't say, only tap and corresponing drill bit /hole size !! HELP
I'm no expert but Tap and Die must match. I've redone holes before and have experienced the same thing. They sometimes seem to be a little loose after re-tapping. Could be your tap is not as precise as the machined hole from the factory or somebody else buggered it up before you. A little Locktite again should fix that!
Yes, you have to use the same (matching) tap and die, if you use one at all. If the bolt is 8x1.25 then you can't use any other size on either the bolt or the hole.
HOWEVER, I think it's better to NOT use a tap/die to clean up threads - they make thread chasers for that that won't cut any new threads. Rather, I would recommend using a wire brush (wire wheel on a bench grinder) on the bolt to clean up the loctite from the threads. This us usually good enough and they'll go right back in. If the hole threads are way too dirty, a pick can be used to clean them out a bit.
