I don't seek validation with my decisions. I just thought I'd share a little change I made to my 1500 today. It's a pretty subtle difference, but a more personalized look. I've never seen one on a Drifter, in the "flesh" so to speak...
Some people are going to say "put the fishtail back on - the fishtail looks better". I really do like the fishtail, but I think that new tip is pretty sharp, too. I think it might grow on you. Might be nice to see another angle....
Tough choice.......I like them both!
Yeah, I know what you mean... I'm not sure about it.. but I'll give it a few weeks before I decide. It's all completely reversible, so time will tell. Ya gotta admit, you've never seen one before. It's an F&S part. It was still sealed in the original box with 1999 newspaper. List price was $120, I paid $25...
That is your choice and no one else's and no reason for you to have to justify your choice. I like the fishtail personally, but that does have an appeal to it on its own merit.
It's about a 1/2 hour job to switch it back. no big deal. I gotta make up my mind.. I'll bet most of the "bikers" out there in the world wouldn't even notice it.....
Troll I too like both looks , however I'm one who likes originality and like you say , never saw another with this set up .

;D LOL , but true story Pastor Dude ;)
Troll I'm on the fence with this mod , every time I look at your ride with each tip I like both of them ??? Guess your ride looks GREAT with either or , IMOP
Thanks...I'm on the fence, too...I think I may have to flip a coin, or something
I have a Morgan Silver dollar we can use for the toss.......
OK, then ....heads I keep it, tails I go back to the fish
Wait, wait! Before you flip.......
I fit put the slash cut on my exhaust, then rotated it so the top hole lined up and, voila.
Love the look and I doubt I'll go back to the fish....
ok can I flip now?
yes.....you can flip now.
I was wondering about that. going to have to do some rethinking. I'll reserve the results of the coin flip for later.
Hey moose when the revealing of the new paint scheme ::) This was just a tease shot ... LOL .... and yes I noticed ;)
ok toss was tails........
I figured as much.....I'm going to give it a week, and then probably switch back.

This week, Boy Wonder......
8) ;)
You only paid $25 for it, why not keep it for this year and get some use out of it, you can always change back yext year and still get your $25 back.
John.
I'm thinking about that. I can't see it when I'm riding, it doesn't sound any different, and nobody but another Drifter owner would even notice it...
For what its worth I kind'a like the slash cut. I was never really that hot on the shark's tail tip on the stock pipes. I know some call it a fish tail but to me true fish tails look like the attached photo and only look good in pairs.
I hear ya...I'm just a little disappointed that it's a side dump rather than top to bottom....looks like the tip on a '78 LowRider...I looked into rotating it, but that would mean I either had one 6mm bolt holding it on (no, I don't think so) or drilling more holes. It's kinda a "collector item" so no holes...
I hear ya on that, but my factory exhaust is so modded anyway one more hole made no difference to me.
I, too, was surprised and disappointed it was a side dump.
Troll, how about making your own slash cut tip, oriented the way you want? I did that on my V&H Longshots as they didn't offer the tips I wanted. I took a piece of exhaust tubing the same size as the pipe on the bike, cut my tips to about a 160* angle, then took a 3" piece of exhaust tubing one size smaller, slipped it inside my tip about 1" or so and welded it from the inside(through the outlet end of the tip) slipped it inside the muffler, marked the hole, drilled the hole a bit oversize then welded a nut inside that piece, painted high-temp black, done. Couldn't find a pic on my laptop of the pipe with tip installed, but the pic attached shows it somewhat.
Just a thought.
I'm going to keep it as designed, and maybe put it back on eBay as slightly used, and see if I can get someone to take it off my hands...

Troll I wouldn't recommend using one whole to hold that tip on myself , but I'd say turn it and drill another hole if that's the look you like . After all if you can place the hole on the inside or underneath no one will ever see it any way . For the price you STOLE the tip for , you'll definitely get your money back if you ever decided to sell it .... holes or not
Stole it? I made an offer on it and they accepted it... not my problem!
ok re did the flip and heads this time.........
2 out of 3?

LOL ... think we should flip the coin now to see the tip in a different position what do you say Ratman . Troll has my curiosity attention level peaked now .... LOL
I think I might install it on my spare muffler and experiment with mounting positions.. It only takes about 10 mins to change the whole assembly..
Keep us posted on this troll , as I would like to see how it looks facing downwards .
ok no reason to flip a coin because Troll will just keep turning that tip till he finds the right spot......
He needs to put on some bagger pipes... then he will have two tips to play with.

Sure - One of each.. Then EVERYBODY would be happy - just stand on the side you like.. ::)
Ok, so I went out the garage today, and took a long look at the side dump exhaust tip I put on. I don't like it...BUT I like the way it looks on Moosewayne's ride...sssssssssooooooooooo. off comes the muffler and I turn it one hole. I like that, but rather than drill a hole in the chrome pipe tip to secure the thing, I look and drill a hole and tap it 6x1.0 mm in the flange of the muffler, and, low and behold, the top screw hole and spacer line up perfectly with the top inner exhaust pipe...drill, tap, and the tip is now secure. The wall thickness of the flange and the pipe isn't as great as a nut, so the threads might not hold up, but I'll give it a try, and I don't have any extra holes in the tip with no bolts in them...everything is reversible!!!...Nahh, no pictures, it's too easy to do to require pictures! Ok, so I took some. Before I left to beat on the old girl for a 100 miles of Dragon Practice, and after I got home..nothing fell off, or got loose, so I guess it's good! Tomorrow I'm going to the National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa, IA. 300 miles or so round trip. If it's still on when I get back.....
Just when we get used to looking at it one way ..... you pull the old switch a roo :o Troll honestly I like the tip in this position a lot better . Just m.o.p of course .
I thought I liked it set up before, side-dump. But, I do think it looks better now pointing down. Nice.
I had my exhaust tip pointed sideways for a while... changed it to pointing down and prefer the look and the sound.
