Title: Afterburner Mod and the Stock Exhaust
Post by: DrifterWood on February 25, 2014, 08:36:39 AM
I currently have an aftermarket exhaust on my 800 and there are occasional backfires. Nothing terrible, but not perfect.  ;D Basically, tell-tale symptoms that may be improved by implementing the afterburner mod (http://www.vulcandrifterriders.com/afterburner.html).

My question: if I implement the mod, and then decide to go with the stock exhaust, which the seller was kind enough to include, will there be any negative effects or changes that I would (or should) undo in terms of the mod?  Aside from running cooler, are there actually any positives in doing the mod on a stock exhaust, or in my case, knowing that I may in fact put it back on the bike?

This is mere conjecture, but one negative I could imagine is if I have the bike serviced I'd think that some of the factory specs might be skewed post-mod and lead to some confusion on the part of the technician.

Thoughts/advice/other?
Thanks in advance.

Disabling the air injection will have no effect on the carb settings. Anything that happens after the combustion chamber (except for a low restriction exhaust, which will increase airflow) will have no effect on the running of the engine, just the emissions at the outlet. The A.I.R. system is meant to burn any left over hydrocarbons that escape the normal combustion process.

You might want to check out these links.  I had the same problem until I marbled my engine.

First ensure your state will allow such a mod... some states inspect motorcycles nowadays and killing the EPA stuff could be a problem.

Any tech worth his salt will be able to deal with any modification like this... its not unusual.

A simple carb readjustment is likely all that is needed to eliminate any popping etc., perhaps rejetting the carb.

Putting the stock exhaust back on would do the same thing.
