Yep, I did it... and I think cleaning them will be fun, since I have nothing else to do around here. Here are the pics, will post tire info soon.

Thank you PC! After much research, I chose Shinko tires, based on price and performance reviews from other mc riders. See pic for tire label details, which are for my 1500. The ww width is 1.5", which seems to be the standard on most ww. Have taken her about 100 miles in last couple days, and bike is handling great and feels better than ever. I took off 7 year old Metzelers which had good tread remaining, but old age got the best of 'em. Bought these at Chaparral Motorsports website, had the best prices I could find, and service from them was good.
These do come with the red dot on side to show where to line up with valve stem, and my installer said they were easy to balance without a mc tire balancer. He spun them off the bike on the axle when he redid the spokes and all that.
This was the first time I ever removed mc wheels from a bike. It was quite easy, saved a few bucks, but most importantly, got to know my Drifter :-* a little better.
http://www.chaparral-racing.com/Product/shinko-777-white-wall-front-tire/369-874181.aspx
Tire tubes: Also from Chaparral, chose these Bridgestones and they worked well Part #:330-0993 Size:140/90-16 and Part #:330-0917 Size:130/90-16
Rim strips: Part #:317-0116 Size:1 1/2" Strip for 16" Rims Looking back at the order, I just realized they possibly sent me the wrong size strips. They actually measure 1 1/8" , which is why the installer reused the old strips which were ok.
Nice....the parts legend would be good to add to the files. Saves a lot of leg (finger?) work when getting ready to purchase.
looks really nice with the ww's. Mr. Clean Magic eraser for day to day cleaning, I just found that really warm water and Scrub Daddy's works well to get the heavy stuff off the rims and tires then the Mr. Clean and it is really easy.
You have to admit the wwws sure make the looks of the bike pop really nice.
Cotton... I purchased a set of Shinko's back In Nov of '13 and have logged about 500 mi... I'm very pleased with the performance... Not to mention the cost... What I paid for front and rear along with mounting was damn near what I was paying for just a rear!
That is sweet.... 8)
I am kicking myself really hard for not putting on WW when I
had to replace my tires last year... :'(
aralph
Yeah Bake, glad you like them. I put another 100 miles on them today, total of about 200 and have no complaints, and they feel good in on the curvy roads I was on today, and I followed a few long cracks in the asphalt, all good so far. My front is getting a little yellowing around the perimeter of the ww, but I took a magic eraser and it came right off. I'll have to try one of Ratman's scrub daddy sponge also once they get real dirty. aralph, our Drifters look so good with any tire, you can't go wrong, as long as you ride a Drifter. There is always next time. Heck, these are inexpensive, maybe you'll replace them a little sooner than you need to if you really get the itch.
Glad to hear you like your Shinko's. Bought a pair last month to replace the originals. Hope to have them on a soon as the paint dries.
Cotton bike looks great with the new skins brother . Thanks for the write up on these . I remember when Bakw mentioned he bought these . Just maybe I'll give them a shot .
I'm about ready for new tires too, and I think these might be the ones.
As soon as my fenders come back from the painter I'm up for new rubber as well.
Can't imagine a Drifter without white walls.
Thanks for the info!
Finally mated up my new WWs with my rims. Tomorrow I hope to start putting her back together.
Those www's are going to make the bike look sweet !!!! Can't wait to see them installed . I never heard of anyone cleaning up the wheels with a hammer ::)
Also proven fact White Walls make the bike go about 5.5 mph faster then black wall tires......

And don't forget how much they increase the possible lean angle. He'll be dragging his knees now!
oh yes and thanks for reminding us of the lean angle with the WW's is increased to at least another 20*, and they let you know when you have reached that limit....thank you Mr. Pastor dude
D1 please explain
QuoteI never heard of anyone cleaning up the wheels with a hammer ::)
I have read the thread twice and saw nothing about a hammer, please show me or enlighten me......thanks....
Ratman put the eye helpers on instead of wearing them around your neck , again . There's a ball pean hammer in the bottom right corner of the pic . Wonder what he uses to clean the rear rim as mine is crusty , caked on black . Just did the rear bearings replaced with all balls soooo weekend job is working on cleaning up the dam rim
ok never noticed the ball peen hammer, but if you use Scrub Daddy sponges and hot water the rims come super clean and then a quick wipe with the Mr. clean and the rims shine like brand new.....
Ratman thanks for the scrub daddy tip now I'll have to search for these and report back .

I know this thread is a little old, but...what is the wear like on these Shinko tires? I am in need of some new tires and these fit the current budget, but I don't want to suffer for saving a few bucks. I have Metzler 880 WWW on now and want to keep the look. Has anyone put sufficient miles on these to judge their quality?
Thanks

Rizzo, check out this video comparison with Shinkos 777 vs Dunflops - I am riding the 777 aggressively and they handle very well, only about 500 on mine though, no complaints.

Just too bad they do not have a WWW in the 140/90-16 for the 800........
Have about 300 miles on my new Shinko WWs. Love how they handle. Especially love the way they track. My old Dunflops tended to track road cracks (Tramlining or Nibbling). The Shinkos do not.

Ratman when I was looking for www's for the 800 last season to put on MA-DEUCE I looked at these shinko's to try them out , but as we all know they don't make the rear . I called Shinko to inquire about this and was told the wasn't a demand for this size , hence the reason I went with the Metzler .
I'm going to try these out as well . The price is right up my alley , unless Mr. GB can work his tire magic and get us all a discount ::) ;)

Unfortunately, for whatever reason, the m/c tire market and the automobile tire markets to not seem to share the same distributors. I have about 6-8 wholesale distributors I get car/truck/semi tires from, and NONE of them handle m/c tires or tubes, or bicycles either. A couple of them DO sell a few ATV tires, which is weird, but they can't get bike stuff. Go figure.
I'm thinking of getting the Shinkos myself- they are a lot cheaper than the Metz or the Contis. However, like I see in the auto tire industry, you usually (but not always) get what you pay for. If I could get, for example, one extra season from the Contis or Metz's then $ per mile, it might be worth it to spend a little more up front. I still haven't seen a "mileage" review on the Shinkos.
Well I am of the mind and it is just my opinion but the Drifter and really the 800 needs white wall tires, it is just not right with the plain black tires. So if I can not get WW's then I will get them in what I can and if need to pay a bit more so be it....

Looks like the Shinkos are going to have to work for me right now...the price fits my budget right now (saving up to hopefully get an 800 this year!)
Thanks for the input everyone!

PC.... I am not sure if my left leg could take the weight or the stress of the bike so will stick with what I know I can handle in a bad situation
DR you do what you need to do and don't let peer pressure drive you.....
These tires look great. I'm going to be purchasing some within the next two weeks . . . just working on getting a few quotes for installation from a few different places in town. How much can I expect to pay (not including actual tire price)?
I've heard some places will add a fee if you bring in your own tires instead of buying directly from them. I'm trying to avoid that.
Bike looks stellar . . . really mates well with the classic look of the Drifter!
Reveen, if I may, can I give you a little advice? Ok, I'm going to anyways!
You obviously have several bike shops in your area. That's a good thing!
My advice is to find one where you like the people and the atmosphere is laid back. Spend some time there and buy a few things from them. They don't have to be big things, but maybe smaller items that they might have a good profit margin on. More importantly, spend some real time and talk to the people there.(just don't hang around too much and become a problem) If it's a privately owned shop, they'll probably be more apt to spend time conversing with you. A privately owned shop will also have more leeway on pricing over a dealership. Hang around the place once in a while. Maybe after a while, just swing by with some McDonalds or something for the guys for lunch, even though they aren't working on your bike or anything. In a few months, just watch how things get a little cheaper, you get dib's on new merchandise, and when your bike comes in the shop, you somehow magically get pushed to the front of the line. Besides that, you'll make some great new friends!
***I gave Drift1 this same advice a few years ago. Just ask him if it works.***
;D Did they not put new locks on the doors of that place?

Thanks for the advice! I like your plan. I sent out a few online "request a quote" things yesterday to a few shops, but I think Im more of an 'in person' type of guy. I already know one place I DONT want to give my money too, just from interactions in the past. I have about 10 or so different options to choose from, so maybe I'll just show up at some of them this afternoon to check them out to see if I can get any vibes from the place. I want my bike to go somewhere that the mechanics care and want to please their customers.
Again, thanks for the advice, I appreciate it!
Really it does work, as Pc said you get to know the people you trat them nice and then after a bit they will be really willing to help you out, anyone working customer service knows this.
OH YEA HOW THIS WORKS ;D ...... I don't even park in the parking lot anymore I just pull the bike right in the garage weather I'm there for service or just to BS for awhile . In fact the owner has giving me permission to store the bikes there this winter season free of charge .
Well, I took you guy's advice and went to a few shops just to feel them out. One was more of a "chopper" type shop, more geared towards total customization. They weren't the friendliest and kinda gave me the vibe of "people come here for custom paint and bikes, not ordering and putting on tires." Another place is just massive metric/Victory/Polaris/Indian dealership with everyone running around busy with seemingly no clue what they are doing (lots of fresh out of high-school looking kids working there.) I read reviews online and multiple people have said that their prices suck and will take much longer than other shops for the most simple jobs.
I ended up really liking a shop that is owned/operated by a father and son. They are both very nice and helpful, and actually took the time to chat with me for awhile about motorcycles. He's ordering my Shinko WWW tires ($110 for front, $115 for rear) and said he will be able to put them on next week. Including tires, he said I can expect to pay around $340 for everything and it should only take a day or two (he said they are really busy this time of year). Does this sound like an OK deal? I told them I'm looking for a shop for all my bike maintenance needs (that I don't feel comfortable doing myself), so I would most likely be a repeat customer . . . he really seemed to value that and told me that he appreciated me giving them a shot over the big dealership in town. Even if I do end up spending a tad more than somewhere else, I'd rather give my cash to these guys, as they offered great customer service.
He quoted you a good price for the tires and it sounds like $340 is not leaving a lot of meat on the bone for them. Did you have them get rim strips and tubes too?
Sounds like he's looking to win your business!

Sounds like you've found "Your Shop". That sounds like a pretty decent deal, depending on the details. The *cheapest* place I've found so far online for the shinkos is Chaparral, and they're $85 and $105. If your 340 includes (like PC said) tubes and rim liners, which it should (you said "everything"), and if it includes them installing the tires on the bike (EG, you're not taking the wheels off and taking them in to them), then I would think that's pretty decent. Of course you could do it yourself cheaper, but if they're not charging you more than they they have in the job, then they're not making any money, and they're not paying any bills, so they won't be around long.
Personally, (but I'm biased) I think you're much better off with a small shop like this - they're not all great of course, but the small family-run shop has more to gain by treating you right and keeping a long-term customer.
I am going to be replacing my tires with new Michelin Commander ll's in a couple of months, I have Pirelli's fitted now and I don't like them..so as I have only a couple of months to go before these will be thrown away I decided to paint the walls white..
The correct way is to scrub the tires clean, the sand down the raised lettering, the scrub them again, then mask them up and then coat them in a special adhesive coating and finally paint them with a special white wall paint..The success rate is not 100%..
So instead I masked them up and without even bothering to clean them I am giving them a couple of coats of Dulux masonary paint that I have left over..If it looks good that's great and if it looks rubbish they will only be on for a couple of months so no loss..whatever they look like I won't be painting my new Michelin's..
John.
On tubes:
1) anybody find a 90* "PV-78" tube for the front tire? Neither of mine currently have a 90 on the front, but I thought it might be handy, if I could find one. Looks like you about have to have one on the back.
2) tube brands - I can't get over the price of these tubes!!! I'm used to selling a name brand 16" inner tube big enough to fit a TRUCK TIRE for $16, and everything except for "bargain" brand tubes are way more than that - some places want $30-50. Does anybody know of anything wrong with the "economy" tubes like bikemaster or what have you, or should we stick with something like a Bridgestone?
Looking sharp man! Love those exhaust tips too... that's a good lookin scoot!

So far about 300 mile on my new Shinko WWs. Looked up the invoice. They were $194.99 from J&P Cycle. I lucked out and they had a free shipping deal running at that time.

That's interesting- because I'm shopping this week, and currently J&P has the rear for $100.99 but the front is $107.99. You don't happen to have the part no's do you? Sometimes I've seen a company have the same thing listed twice at different prices, for whatever reason. At Chaparral, they're $95.88 and $83.88. I'd rather buy from J&P - have a gold membership. Chaparral sent me an email "you have stuff in your cart, and if you buy it today, you get $15 off!!". But evidently it doesn't work for tires- the code said it applied but did nothing to reduce the total. :(

Quite often you will find two or even three prices for the same tire depending on the date stamp..

New Shinkos on this week, so no mileage to speak of yet, but they feel great so far. Front and rear tires with mount and new tubes at the local kawi dealer was right around $285, so can't complain there. Only thing is they wanted 1/2 hour rate to clean the blue off the WW. Of course I said no thanks I'd do it myself...so what is the best method of getting the blue protective coating off of the sidewalls? obviously I'd like to spend more time riding and less time cleaning tires, so any tips/tricks to speed up the process is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Rizzo
Warm water and Mr. Clean Magic eraser,
Warm water and scrub daddy sponges as a second choice.
I'll agree with Ratman . I used the warm water Mr. Clean method all the time to get them clean . When I first purchased the www's I had my little guy clean the blue off in the tub before having them installed made it that much easier , your case is a little different being there all ready on ;D

The name is the same, but they changed the product slightly a couple of years ago. I hear the new formula isn't as good, which is a shame, because that stuff was magic. I'm down to 2 more bottles of the old formula myself, so I guess I'll find out soon! (I stocked up when Dollar General had them for $3 a bottle a few years ago.)

Couldn't find Wesley Bleche-Wite although i understand Sears sells it. I bought Black Magic Bleche-Wite instead. It is actually blue in color. For the most part it does the job but the tires are new so we'll see how it works when they have some years on them. Gotta break down and buy an adaptor for my cycle jack. Tough to scrub the kickstand side of the back tire plus having to push the bike halfway down the driveway to rotate he tires enough to get them clean. We all pay for our thrills one way or another.
The blue stuff is just a soap type material - at our car shop we just use water and a scrub brush. On stubborn ones, we use whatever spray cleaner happens to be handy. Of course, we don't charge extra to clean the whites... Can't believe they do that...
Finally got my new white walls on! Had an unexpected funeral out of town last week, so I didn't get the bike into the shop until Monday (got her back yesterday afternoon).
The shop was great... guy was really friendly and really into the Drifter. We talked about bikes for a bit. He said "you've really got something special there" and "don't ever sell it!" I told him about how i want to modify the seat for my wife and he gave me the name of a lady that does upholstery work that he has used before. When I was leaving and started my bike up, he yelled "awesome!" and gave me a big grin and a thumbs up. All and all it was a great experience and I can see myself going back for any other work I might need.
