Ok the snow is here the cold temps are here so my list is in progress and we are off now in mod time.
#1. replace both set of brake pads, this will encompass, rebuilding both calipers and checking all hoses and cables involved in the operation of the brakes,
#2. Bike now has 33 some ks on it and not knowing if the valves have ever been checked or looked at that is in the plans for after xmas,
#3. Seat is getting new foam and gel foam, sculpted and formed to my buttocks, by a local custom seat-maker, at the seat place,
#4. Replace front springs with 1500 Progressive springs and new oil, on order, remove and check triple tree bearings and parts,
#5. Replace rear shock, on order, remove all the pivot points and bearings, grease fittings, check and replace as required, grease, re install,on order waiting delivery
#6. add what will be black bumperettes to the rear fender, First coat of primer is on and drying,
#7. Replacing all the chrome bullet heads with black ones, painted and done waiting to be installed,
#8. Build the nacelle' paint it black and install it, have the parts here, decided to forego this mod because of the windscreen
#9. Replace handgrips, grips are on order
#10. Replace rear sprocket with 38T 0ne because of 0hi0 barn said to almost done
#11. Still working on rear passenger folding floor boards.
#12. Mystery project, project might be out because lack of finding correct parts required
# 13 Second mystery project, still hunting up the parts

What grips are you going with? I have the black Kury Iso grips and they look nice and are very comfortable. I also put on a matching black throttle boss. This was well worth it. At least till I get some sort of cruise control.
And what did you mean by "nacelle"?

gdrudd13; grips came today from Value Accessories, bought the Kuryakyn Black ISO 6345 like you, but I passed on the throttle boss, I tried one and just could not get comfortable with it. If I am right there is like a 1" difference in the diameter between the grips so this should help my numb right hand, like putting arthritic grips on a golf club.
A nacelle is that cover behind the headlight in front of the forks that hides all them cables and hoses, found it on the Drifter Riders Forum, on the delphiforums. I have it saved to a word document but can not figure how to pass them on to anyone...lol.....computer genius is not me...
Sprockets are done, just waiting for the rear shock to close up the back of the bike.
Ratman I do believe that nacelle mod is on here as well . Pastor dude posted it up .Should be in the mod section and you think your not a computer genius man trying using these 10 thumbs lol
Soooo you have the rear sprocket complete , heh . Good for you , you already installed a new chain when you did the front didn't you ? I can't remember , but pretty sue you said it was done ? How do them grips feel ? I'm a victim of the right hand numbness myself . partially due to military and a lot to do with running chainsaws for the past 16 years .
could not find that mod here but I have it as a word doc so once I figure it out I'll get it posted here, not sure who the actual builder was for this project.
I went to the new grips and think they are larger and went with the idea of golf grips that the bigger grips better for arthritic hands.....

I really like the Kury grips. I didn't ride much at all with the old ones so I don't have much of a comparison, but the new ones are great. I hated the old ones. Seem to be less felt vibration, and the larger diameter is really nice. Plus with the raised cushioned part it seems like you don't have to grip as hard to hold the throttle at a certain position. I'm glad they come in black though. Chrome wouldn't look right on the blacked out drifters. I think you'll like them.

Everyone in the north has a rec room to keep our sanity over the winter. Mr. I got a fleet of trucks, a sun room, an acreage, my own business, run half the town and State.
Anyhow no way to get a bike into the back it is a 10 ft drop into the backyard.....but I have been thinking of French doors for the front window or even a roll up window door, like on them restaurants on the sidewalks.......

#12 and 13 are your mystery 8) projects....I have a few of those too...one is almost done, can't wait to share it when done. Good luck with your projects, it is good to make a list like you did, I should write mine down too, and it'll clear up my head for a while.
Thanks CM the grips are half on...lol.......the throttle grip went on slick and easy. I just had all the housings opened and removed the cables from the throttle, slide the grip up and with a pair of needle nose pliers slipped the ferrules into the spots and it was done. The left one I am waiting till I have the bike done and all back together so I can sit on it and line it up with the right one as to the actual position because it will be glued on with adhesive.
What I did on the left grip, and what has worked well so far, is that instead of putting glue on the entire length of the bar, I just put glue on about the last 1.5 inches of the grip closest to the switch cover. Mine was a fairly tight fit so that let me get it most of the way on without having to worry about the glue. It's held well so far for about 1k miles. Although mine probably would have been fine without glue with how tight of a fit it was.
I could do it like a golf grip......mmmmmmmm...and that is really easy.....

I had the same issue even with the ISO Grips (which I like). I added some leather and some ISO Wings, and that helped, but what finally cured the problem was some deer leather (deer leather is the only leather that stays soft after it gets wet and dries out) fingerless gloves with gel filled palms. Totally cured the problem! I can ride all day with no numbness! Now I don't ride without them! The easiest way I know of for doing the word document stuff is to just open up the document on your computer and then copy / paste it. To add pics, you can then post it, then go to "modify post" and it opens it up in a new window for editing. Just under the text editing box is a button to add attachments. Click that to upload pics from your computer. If you want the pics to be inserted into the text instead of all at the end, you'll need a web hosting site for the pics. I use photobucket. (It's free!) I just insert the img link into the text at the appropriate place.
Ratman I like the look of the castle , looks like a man cave ;) my basement ( also known as the man cave ) looks just this . Nothing like watching tv or listening to tunes all in the comfort of warmth and a cozy chair .
Dude I took the bike out for a quick 33 mile ride and let me tell ya what a HUGE difference between the new neck bearings , progressive springs and that 18/40 sprocket upgrade . Your going to absolutely LOVE the feeling . I don't know about GB , but for myself big difference in the vibration as well on the highway . I'm very pleased and like so many others wish I had done this sooner !
PC , thanks for that tip I'm definitely going to try those there gel pad gloves . Man the numbness I got STINKS . Think I'll try different handle bar grips as well for the comfort . My stock ones are pretty well worn out any how . Oh yea that drifter is amazingly pretty by the way . I have that bike saved from before , I believe you showed it to me last year ?
D1 I did the 18/40 last summer and found a huge difference, this winter I am doing the 18/38 for more of a over drive thing. I am so stoked about the new grips can not wait to try them.

Sorry ratman just noticed I posted 18/40 . I meant 18/38 . I thought first gear was going to be a little tougher on the throttle response , but no sir . Dude your going to love this mod . I even got fancy an added a little bling - bling as you say and went with a gold chain just to give the scoot some pizaaz ......lol

It's hard to go wrong with the ISO Grips with ISO Wings! To lose the chrome look, glue on some leather grip covers ( http://www.chilhowee.net/grip-covers.html ) and top it off with some lever covers to match ( http://www.chilhowee.net/kawasaki-lever-covers/LC004.html ).

Oh, and I almost forgot, this is a Nomad that David did a nacelle for. The owner of this Nomad added a metal Gilroy Indian front fender. He had to do quite a bit of custom work, including widening it, to make it work, but it's all steel.

PC forgive me here , but what are ISO wings , the levers ? You know I bought and installed covers from Chillowee last year . The thing is the fringe just was to my liking on my scoot . Guess it really didn't go with the theme .

You got that exactly right. Less vibration at highway speeds due to the lower revs, and it doesn't sound like it's screaming at you at 60 mph... And the fork springs make a huge difference.... I've said it before, I think the 18/38 ratio and the progressive springs are "must do" mods on the 800.

I have the large throttle boss (but it black) on mine. I like it. It made a huge difference for me but I know some people don't like them. It lets me stretch out my fingers which is why I like it. I also have the leather covers for the clutch and brake levers. Been there since I've had my bike. They're comfortable as well. I don't have anything to compare them to though so it might not make a big difference. Any clue where the rear bars came from on that blue drifter? I really like those.

David made those, as well as the saddle bag protector bars.
Progressive Shocks rear 645 series are on back order, so that project is on hold till some time in Dec or later, but the front springs should be here by Tuesday. So will get on to that project.
Cool Front springs are here, rear shock is at least 6 week back order right now. So Mr. GreenBarn I am going to follow your instructions and see how well it works......
Cool dude !!! Now being your bike is put away for winter your not able to try these new springs out right away . My suggestion to you is push down on the existing shocks now a few times . Maybe mark the fork with a piece of tape as to how far you can press them . When you replace the OLD springs with the NEW progressive springs try to reach the same mark . GOOD LUCK ... LOL it will never happen ;) Dude I had a chance to ride with my new front springs and man O man wish I would have did this much sooner .
What's the deal on the rear spring ? Not producing many or selling them out that fast ? Man 6 weeks , maybe I'll have a chance to save up for one of those , for MA-DEUCE ::)
Too late for that foolishness, they have been apart and hanging and dripping for the last few days. This weekend they will be done and ready to mount on the bike. I just have the steering head to check and grease then the forks back on and away we go.
As for the rear shock that is from the supplier and not sure why, but I'll have the front end back together and then the back is a piece of cake. forks, then valves, or rear shock and we are done the major work the rest is easy and will just move along.
Really crappy weather outside so I put the paint booth back in place, the final coat of black on the bumperettes are now done and they are drying, and the paint booth is back to being a laundry room, and clothing drying area from snow covered clothing.....will let them cure for a few weeks and start to polish them with some good car wax. Bring the shine out on them.
Ratman: looks like you are making good progress. I know you're not there yet, but do remember to report out on the valve lash as you find it before adjustment....for those of us waiting to do the same thing...or not. Thanks.

Here in this area it seems that a lot of the mechanics do not hold jobs for a long time, they get a good reputation, they work hard and are abused by their bosses, like Dave has been laid off for the winter and he is having issues with his bosses because he refuses to move boats, hot tubs and such around the show room..... anyway, he is reputed to be one of the better bike wrenches in the area, so.....
He had listened to my bike in the fall, and said it sounded really nice a tight. So he explained his idea and his plan to work on my bike. It can be done without engine removal, simply take off the tank, all the stuff up top and remove the air cleaning stuff. Then remove the valve covers, I near pooped when I saw how deep down my plugs were...lol.....I will also be posting some pictures as Dave said that would be fine, he has no issues with it, and I will credit him with doing the work. He also said that best case it is not going to be more then an inspection because everything is in the limits and bang on. So just waiting for him to call me back and let me know what day he is going to do it. I'll keep you posted.

Yea I'd say so . I'm pretty sure your going to find there's no adjustment needed on your valves ratman . Better to be safe then sorry though , of course ! Wonder is all in tell for that grampsizing mod ? If it's just liminating the air box your half way there brother . Rejet the carb and BAM mystery 101 project done on your list ;D
grampsizing was never on my list but will talk it over with Dave. Project 11 and 12 are still waiting for parts and more info.

Ok so now to go and get the colour matched so I can fix a couple of spots on the fenders, then call the Mechanic to do the valves and we can now tee up a time and date to get that done. So everything is going along on time and with in my budget, now if Uncle Troll and Uncle Greenbarn get me my rear folding floor boards I could sign off another project...

I did post that the local Honda Dealer was getting the shock for me, it was supposed to be here the 14/01/14, but the other day they moved the date back to mid Feb. So I am looking else were;
I did check here at Bike Bandit too and the results were $475.36 for the shock + $31.90 shipping and then customs and Brokerage fees upon arrival, so
I called a Kawasaki shop in Petawawa and they have quoted me $594.95, the one in Sudbury quoted me $595.20.
so I spent last night getting a list of the cost for this part;

So this morning I decide to go to the local Kaw shop, and low and behold, new guy in the parts department. Seems the owner has moved his son and the other parts guy to the main store in Sturgeon Falls. So the new guy right off asked me if I had and prices in mind, when I asked about the shock, he was hunting for a book to find it and find the part number, so I gave him the part number from Progressive, and the SKU# from each of the sites above.
He did say that he would match the lowest price I could find in Canada from a dealer. So tomorrow I'll go back and ask if he has a part and a delivery date for me.
Got the confirmation number last night the shock has been shipped. ETA is the 15th on my door step, bought it from Canada's Motorcycle in Montreal QC. Free shipping and so $481.91 and taxes $62.65, $544.56 and my time and labour, with a few pm's to Tripewire to help me out I will have it done soon. Tomorrow going to go and see my seat........everything is on line......

I love mine - mind you it's not steady speed, only steady throttle position - so depending on the road yoru speed may vary a bit - but it works great!
I too have the ISO grips and love them. Did the front springs two years ago - had the valves ran at kawi dealer in Ohio - never again - we'll be doing it ourselves next time! 4 did need minor adjustment by the way and that was at about 8,000 miles.
Totally lost my steering neck bearing at drift in last year - - won't be making that mistake again! On my list for right now: neons, oil change, remove rear lowering kit, major cleaning, check front brakes and service clutch and throttle cables.
As for the 1500 vs - - the 800 is a much nicer ride!
Shock came yesterday morning, can see the difference between them, anticipating a difference between them.
I have one of them but found that on the stock grips, on a long flat stretch it would let the throttle back off and not always slow. Will try it again then with the ISO grips, see if that makes a change.
I have never done this type of valves before so the first time I would like help with it, and that is why one of the local mechs said he would come over to the house and help me.
Yes saw you post on the steering and heard of a few others with issues so that is why when I did the front springs I went and took a look at everything and greased and cleaned and re greased everything that moved.

should have said LED's - used to be neons, once upon a time - anyway, gonna light it up like a christmas tree - running some led lighting under my bags n tank, etc., fitted up nice little white leds in my saddlebags today, so at night i can still see all my crap in my saddlebags if i need to. Running it all to a junction block, then a switch - so should i come into contact with an unappreciating officer i have the option to simply turn it off. Plus each section will be wired into the block, so if I lose a section or somehow damage one length, the other will still work as they will not be in a continuous line. I'm thinking it may help a bit when night riding to be seen from the side...friend of ours almost hit broadside last year when the car didn't see him passing in front of them. Thinking about the gear mod, but won't do that til I need to replace the gear anyway - right now mine is not worn, still looks good.

Well got a call today from the seat guy, and because he is almost caught up on his work in snow machine seats he is going to start on my seat this week and said it should be a couple days and it would be done.
project #8 is off the list because of the windscreen like I said.
project #11 is on hold still because GreenBarn is not helping me......
project #13 and 14 still working on just having a really hard time finding the parts......
so we are moving along and once the snow is gone we will be ready......
Everything is done on my list except for this little problem keeping me from getting to the street....

ok let me be gentle here, let me be really good about this post.........how can we help , I have been after you for over a year now about project #11 and you have gotten me no place......so 13 and 14 are now on hold actually because they can not be done over the summer.
so my list for winter 2014 are as follows
1. rear folding floor boards, ps no help from GB....
2. mystery project 13
3. mystery project 14
4. black braided brake lines front and rear with colour matched fittings and red banjo bolts
that is the start.........
That's a good start to 2014/2015 winter projects there my friend . Seems your having the same trouble finding those rear floorboards as I am a set of rear crash bars . Maybe GB would make me a set or handy man 49 . I'd ask Troll , but one doesn't want to shake the bear ;)

There was a set of rear boards for a vn800-1500 on eBay for a week, the the price went straight up in the last hour...They were chrome, though.....
problem with the boards is I saw a set and really liked them but have never seen them anyplace, and to top it off could never find the picture again, so it is a matter of just waiting the right ones to fall in my lap or at least to hunt them up......I have the time.......
Thanks 49 , I saw Ted's however his won't work with a sprung seat being the mounting point on top is to the seat bracket , I believe ? I'm looking for a set like this

No sir ratman . Ted's goes from the rear peg up to the seat itself .
ok now that you switched the pictures, it is the lower mount that you are having issues with then. Because they both look like the top mounts are to the holes in the frame fro the seat bracket. Think it is Ted's that they use the bars as the passenger foot pegs too.

Just had a call from the guy doing my seat and it is ready and can be picked up next time I am down that way, he said it was going to be lower and a bit narrower then it was and has a decent amount of foam still in it and a layer of gel foam too.
Also found out this morning, seems that Dave the mechanic who was going to help me with the valves went down south for a back operation, and is just gotten back and seems his now ex wife has moved and left no messages for him or who has been calling, so need to see if and when he will be working again, so valves will be on hold for a bit. Going to start my hunting of parts and pieces for the next list over the winter......lol......

What a simple job to do a valve check on the 800, not sure why I was so hesitant on doing it but now that I have been walked through it, to do the check is really easy. Now to learn to replace them if that ever needs doing. GB I'll pm you the cost of this job by a certified Kaw mechanic.....lol......

both my in's were 0.005
both my ex's were 0.009
so after 34353 kms or 21,346.548 miles they are perfect. The mechanic was really impressed on how clean the inside was and how tight everything was.

Ok first ride of the year, went about 12 kms and everything was and is working fine, and sounds really good, other then burning the grease off the new exhaust gaskets......lol at first looked like we were on fire.......all is well and good........
Haven't even taken the cover off mine since last fall. :'(
Forecast is calling for snow this weekend.....
You REALLY need to move a little more South...like maybe nearer Niagara Falls...That arctic circle stuff really sucks. Just to rub it in, I got out for a little bit this morning. The sun came out and the thermometer said 50, so off I went. I rode up to lock and dam #6 on the Mississippi. Not a big deal, but at least I got out. There was a towboat locking through with like 20 barges on it. The river stage is at about 10' right now, but we had about 1 1/2" inches of rain yesterday, and they are predicting more for Sunday through Thursday. The river crested, as you can see from the parking lot picture, and where I'm parked was under water yesterday. The river is going back up, so we may get some flooding yet.....That last one is a spur of the moment "selfie"
So how ya likin' that new exhaust tip? Is it a keeper?

PC if you have an atlas or use your Computer I drove to Sudbury, and it was snowing on the way up and the amount of snow in the bush and long the road was just a blast to see and Lake Nipissing is still covered in ice no open water to be seen.

Meanwhile, south of the arctic circle, I broke a healthy sweat today while mowing the lawn.

Sweat is something that happens after the ambient temperatures go anywhere over 58*F after that it is too hot to be with out AC running on high........had to go North to a bigger city to buy some stuff that my local Hardware store could not get after a year of me ordering it and getting lied to and having my chain jerked......

The local store lost a huge sale not just from me, but today 3 more neighbours looked at the sun shelter I was putting up and I told them to go to Sudbury because they can get them in a week.......lol.......

Ahhh good for you buddy . Hope the weather works in favor to get that MUCH needed wind against the face . Let us know how you like the sprocket change . I personally love it and think it made a huge difference with eliminating searching for that sixth gear .

ok so today got out for my first ride of the season; Cold and threatening more rain, but decided to go for a ride, got in just over 100 km both city and highway, so here we go about the winter changes,
rectifier cover did nothing but cosmetic.
new brakes front and rear and rebuilt the calipers, everything is working as it should...good thing....
sounds really nice and quiet, and we know the valves are ok
ah the seat, oh some soft and comfortable, was pretty good.
suspension system front was really nice and firm and the rear shock great, nice and stiff the way I wanted it to feel
hand grips great really comfortable
bumpettes cosmetic but look great,
now for the sprocket set up
FANTASTIC......18/38 makes a really different change, now that being said, no change in town per my riding style, found no difference in take off or acceleration, on the highway you notice it as you open the throttle and pull way and you have a longer power band, and then shift, not looking for sixth gear, and seems that the top end is really a lot less vibration and the sound is not like it is running at the top of the power band. Really impressed on this so far.....seems my man GB was right on this count........as with the suspension......
I prayed for some sun for ya, and I guess you at least got a break from the rain, so that's good!

Excellent Ratman 8) Knew you would love the front spring change and definitely the sprocket swap . Man that really is like night and day from the stock set up , ah . Now for the new grips , I love how they feel , the fact of getting air through my fingers and less vibration from stock grips . However , and not sure if yours are doing the same thing or not , but not to keen on the black palms .

D1, the bounce of the old springs is gone, no more sitting at a light and having the front dive to a stop, and the rear shock max comfort now....
black palms, nope, I never ride without gloves, just a thing no matter how hot it is I always wear gloves, I know people with fairings who do not because their hands are safe behind the fairings, protected from stones and bugs........till they and the bike part company.......so no black palms....lol....
YEA it's a bad habit for me not wearing riding gloves . The only time I wear them riding is when it's extremely frigid . I don't wear gloves at work either just not a glove person , never was . Guess my hands are used to being beat up so the bugs and pebbles just sting for a second , or till the pain goes away ;D I'd hate to see how black the grips turn your hands when it gets hot out I better find myself some nice gloves before hand .
