Title: Shipping parts to Canada
Post by: John Hopkins on October 10, 2013, 08:39:23 AM
After reading through a few of these posts I have come to the conclusion that it is difficult for Canadians to get some parts delivered from America, of course I may have misunderstood the situation..

If there is a problem for Canadians why not cross the border at the nearest crossing and open a post office box in America and have the parts delivered there, then when you order something just cross the border and pick it up..

John.

 You have the basic understanding John, for example, I find my progressive shocks on Amazon.com, I order them and get doen the ordering and do the shipping info and then the system will inform me that there is an error with my order and that amazon.com does not ship to my address. Lots of e bay sellers do not ship to Canada. Those that do charge you a hockey sock for shipping and import charges.
  It is at least a 6 hour drive/ride to the nearest border crossing for me, I then have to get the post office box, now a lot of towns close to the border are on to that game and will not rent out a box if you give your Canadian Home address. Then you have to cross the border and deal with CBSA or customs, and then you have to claim the items, and pay the duty and the HST tax on it so you have not really gained anything.
  Now aralph he might be in on the know better then me because he lives right on the border.

Sounds like a business model that someone is probably making money from.

Unfortunately, with VAT, customs fees and just regular shipping fees a lot of people don't want to deal with shipping. Canada is a BIG country... it would be like driving from Hastings to Inverness or more in some cases.

Yeah I guess I know how big Canada is, what I don't really know is how far each forum member is from the border..The idea must have already have been thought about by people who are close to the border..probably even have worked out how to use an empty lot in the town as their address when they opened the box..but I think it is wrong that someone a mile in one direction pays more or less for the same item as someone a mile in the other direction..

 John when I was in high school, if you lived on the even side of our street you were allowed to ride the bus, if you lived on the odd side of the street you had to walk be cause the middle of the street was the "LINE" on who could and who could not ride the bus.

Title: Re: Shipping parts to Canada

I would imagine you had to walk....

lol we lived on the walk side of the street, but my dad being the smart guy he was told us to leave the house the same time as the bus left from the corner, we were to walk straight to the school and not dawdle, walk normal and properly, if they gave us a detention for being late we were not to serve it we were to come straight home and he would deal with it. We never did have to deal with it.....think he did on a regular basis, the next year the line was moved to the field behind our street....

Hey my turn, I live in Windsor right across from Detroit.
Most American sellers and companies ship free within the USA.
As Ratman says they want a "hockey sock" or a ton of cash to ship to Canada.
Type in a Canadian postal code next time your on ebay and see how stupid things get.
I usually ship to the UPS store just on the other side and pick it.
You don't have to rent a box, just ship it there with a contact # and they let you know when
it arrives for a small fee.
Almost $10 in tunnel toll fees and then possibly duty and taxes at the border.
Not everything has duty.
My Corbin seat and Vanes & Hines exhaust was only the taxes. Only 13% in Ontario. :o
So it really has to be a good deal to be worth your while.

another 2 cents worth

Windsor is 7.5 hours Sault Ste. Marie is 5.6 hours one way, and fuel......ok I have a 2004 GMC Jimmy for my other vehicle.

Progressive mono shock off of e bay shipped from MI to Canada to my door ........
$401.04 for shock
$  35.20 for Shipping
$  53.00 for taxes
$  45.00 for import taxes.
$534.24 all done........

From Canadacycle
$544.56 to my door everything included.

From local Honda dealer
$535.00 everything included......

  However I am mystified that my good pal DC has not offered to purchase the parts I require, then offer to drive them up to me of course at his cost, and offer to buy the parts for me because of my meager military pension. I would let him spend the night to rest up and relax before his ride home in the morning.....GB would do it for me as would most other members.......

A day and a half drive one way for me. Not an option. I have stuff shipped to my Dad's in Montana, and pick it up when I go to visit, about 2x/year. Some Americans will not sell to Canadians; this is really a "discriminatory" thing. To them I say, you lost the war of 1812, get over it!!!!!   ;D ;D Seriously, though, it is an issue sometimes, to buy stuff from the states.

It seems to me that 25% in 'visiable' taxes is way too much, that is the sort of thing that started the American war of independence..All of our governments seem to exist to overtax us but I suppose in Canada and Britain the counterbalance is a very heavily subsidised medical package with free hospitals and doctors, free medicine for some, an old age pension, free bus transport for pensioners and free schools..we still pay to go into an old peoples home, for home nursing and to be buried but in most cases we can leave something behind for our children.

Gotta be carefull here, the above is for information only, it is not a moan and is getting dangerously close to straying from the original theme of motorcycle parts supply..

By the way the reason we call a motorcycle a motorbike is because it is easier to say and shorter to write motorbike..and some of us are lazy.

For motorcyclist read biker..

John.

  JH this is not on my part a moan or a complaint or whinning, I have grown accustomed to this and have learned to live with it. It is a apin every so often and we just adapt to it. This is more just a statment of fact.

Most of the time its the shipping cost associated with shipping to Canada. It's ridiculous. UPS likes to spike up the cost and add on the customs fees and what not. It's just not worth it to pay the extra cost. Sometimes you'll luck out and find a company wiling to ship for a fair price, but other times we get killed on the shipping cost.

I don't live close enough to the border to just walk over and do that... It's kinda tough.

Just found (at long last) an aperture for a vintage sight/ Been looking for one for over a year. Problem: seller won't even accept emails from non-U.S. email addresses. Sight aperture is only $20.00 U.S., would have had it shipped to my father in Montana, but can't even email the guy.

Poop. :(

I have spent too much time trying to find an aperture for an old (very old) tang sights for one of my singleshot rifles; found one finally on eBay, the seller would not ship to anywhere but the good old U.S.A. But, thanks to Greenbarn, I now have an aperture for my tang sight for my singleshot .45-70.

Many thanks, GB. Much appreciated!!

  oh lord how selfish of me, so in humble grace I apologize to you my fine 0hi0 friend sorry. So to make up for this fault I have order this part for you in chrome, along with 2 other items I think would look really nice on your bike, now out of respect to my generous spending on your behalf of funds I can ill afford I would only ask that you mount these parts on your bike as required with the manufacturer's instructions and left on your bike for at least one (1) year.
  I am sure the rest of the forum members would agree with me.......

That's too much to pay for 6 bolts to start with BEFORE shipping....   Now sure which bolts/screws you need, but many timee you acn go to your local hardware and get metric bolts with allen or phillips or different types of heads that will look nice on your ride, in STAINLESS for a lot less than that.  I have a hdw store 15 miles from me and they have a pretty good selection.
