Title: Security chain and padlock
Post by: Driftwood on June 09, 2009, 15:18:47 PM
Hello everyone,

Only had my Drifter for a few weeks, and realise that I can't use a disc lock (disc has no holes!), so will have to resort to using chain and padlock....BUT....has anyone any ideas on how to carry/store the heavy chain and lock on the bike?
I can't use a sissy-bar as my partner (mid 60's) can't get on the pillion when the back rest is in place...so that puts paid to having an dedicated carrier, and to carrying it on the pillion seat...she doesn't complain, but sitting on the chain may cause a problem!!!!
However I have made a temporary carrier from sheet alloy, covered in leatherette, and bolted to the pannier stays and braced on the pillion hand rail...not sure if this can take the weight!
I don't want to carry heavy gear up front on the forks...so any ideas would be welcomed.

Love the bike, as my first foray into the cruiser world, from all styles of bikes in the past, including scooters.

Take care    Driftwood.

There is a small storage area under the left side cover that could be used if your chain and lock isn't too big.  Other then that, maybe a windshield bag, or move the rectifier to under the radiator and then fill the resulting hole on the side of the bike with a leather tool bag to carry the chain.  Lastly, there's always saddlebags....................

Ted Struble has a really cool tool bag kit that relocates the rectifier up front and mounts the tool bag to cover your driveshaft. I put one on mine; it looks really good. Handy storage for such things as your lock and chain. It is availeable on the VDR site.

You can always add a bag... or a harley tool box (if you relocate the rectifier).

Cheers.

drill the front disk in 4-6 spots. round the edges, and your in business without carrying he chain.
