Title: Engine question
Post by: Petemoss on September 23, 2013, 23:03:28 PM
Is the 2003 1500 the same in  both the Drifter and Nomad models?

I'm certain others will have better info, but if I remember the answer is no. The flywheel is different.. Better low end torque on the drifter motor.. The classic 1500 is the bolt on alternative if I recall..

I found a 2003 engine cover that has a chrome inner. Would that fit?

I think the cover is the same, but you will need lots of hardware. The 4 chrome socket head screws that hold it on go into special stand-offs, not just holes in the engine case. The stand offs are located on the bevel housing. The alternator cover on the '99 is domed, and flat on the '01 and later to make room for the chrome cover...Those chromed inner covers are almost as rare as a solo seat rail.

I took a chance and bought it.

Hope this fits. If not, back on eBay!

Lemme know here, if it doesn't fit. I have some extra stand-offs from my bevel drive adventure...

Will do. Troll, can't I just use the exhausting hardware?

What year is yours? Does it have the 2 stand offs on the bevel drive? If you look under mods and tips about my bevel drive replacement, the pictures will show you what I'm talking about. The front bolts go into the Alt. cover, the rear go into those...http://www.vulcandrifterriders.com/forum/index.php?topic=24586.25

My Drifter is also a 2003. And I don't understand what the stand offs are.

You ever figure out anything about the drinking problem??   The oil consumption?

Ok, then, I thought you had a '99. The cover should be a bolt on. If you look, after you take your old one off, on the bevel drive housing, you will find 2 17mm hex  long nuts screwed into the bevel housing. These are the stand offs. The '99 and 2000 wouldn't have had them.

No. Doing a compression test this weekend. Weird thing going on though. Now I'm not seeing as much black soot anymore. So I guess the bike is running leaner than it was. This is since the temp dropped some. But this morning I noticed white smoke when I hit the throttle.

Sounds like  you've got some sensor screwed up, but I don't know anything about the sensor system on the 1500's.  Troll?

Hmm White smoke;  Smells sweet it's coolant leaking into cylinder, if it is burning oil you know what that smells like.

Yes this will fit - in fact it used to be a Kawa accessory part - so well done as its hard to find.
