The Longshots I got with my Drifter are damn loud
Looking down the pipe, they seem to be 'straight thru' with just some outer baffling. There is a mounting screw a few inches back from the end.
Is there a baffle I'm missing? (other than the optional 'quiet baffle' V/H sell).
While I'm at it - V/H used to sell some fish tail caps for these pipes. Seem to be as rare as hens teeth now. Any ideas who might still have some in stock?
I have the same pipes. Bought them brand new.
The only baffle in there looks like a 2 ft cheese grater and is "straight thru".
I thought they were to quiet and pulled them out. No complaints from the neighbors.
I also could not find those elusive fishtails and ended up going with the slash cut tips.

Yeah, they are really embarrassingly loud. I had them on my bike when I first bought it. The P.O. put them on, and managed to dispose of the stock system. I was working weekends at an Army Base, and the gate guards always gave me the evil eye when I came on base. I put a Cobra peace pipe on, and no more evil eye....Now I have a stock system...no cops watching me. I think it tells a story about noise when little kids plug their ears when they see you starting your bike...
There has to be a way to quiet them down, but the mechanical baffles just keep cops from sticking a dowel up the pipe before they write you up.
I guess loud is a matter of opinion. No evil eye yet. :o

Mine have the baffles they came with, they are the straight-through type of baffle; not too loud, loud enough I can hear it over the wind at 65 mph. I took the baffles out for a try, then it was LOUD....I put them back in. As to the fish-tail tips, I phoned V&H when I bought my pipes, they told me they were discontinued. Cheek JC Whitney; they sell stuff like that quite often, so does J&P Cycle.

I have the Roadhouse system on my 800, aralph, and a neighbour 2 doors down has complained to my next door neighbour that my bike is very loud at 0630 - 0700 in the mornings.....( ride to work three mornings if weather allows) I start the bike at the top of the drive way, pipes are faced away from her home, and it idles about 3 mins before I take off and away from her house.
She stopped complaining when a friend came over with his 1100 Areo and the V&H longshots on it......
These pipes do sound different on other bikes.
Shortly after I took the baffles out of mine I met a guy with a
Honda with the same pipes and he made me seem quiet.
Huge difference.

I've ordered a set of baffles from Big City Thunder.
And may have even sourced a pair of the twin-fin caps :)

Troll, do you still have the Cobra pipe? Is it for sale?? It was quite a bit quieter than the long-shots??
I have hardkrome's on my 800 and they are louder than my liking. I get the impression they are similar to the long shots, from appearance and descriptions given on here. I'm in the market for a 1500 and wanting roadhouse exhaust, but they're hard to find. Any idea how the cobra compares?

I have Longshots and I live around a lot of fussy people that are bored with life. So when I pull out in the morning, or whenever, I try to putt-putt out really slowly with very little throttle. So far, no complaints.
They actually allow you to have your bike in the confines of the retirement home? That is so cool, can not wait till I am old........

The peace pipe is louder than the stock exhaust, and has a nice "crack" about 4500 rpm...I still have it, and no, it's not for sale.

Not a retirement home. However, there are many patients at this facility. Rarely, do they let us out on the street. I try to sneak out as often as possible, as I have a cult to run. It's a full-time business keeping my members pacified and milked of their life savings.
I run with Hard Krome headers, yes they are straight pipe. Looks a lot like the Long shots. During DI-2010 They couple from Louisiana had designed a way to quiet their Long shots. He used two washers (what looked like sink drain items) He off set them a little so when you tightened them they would lock in place in the exhaust pipes. This lowered the noise a lot and still gave it a nice sound without the loudness). Wish I could help you more.

Lurch, did you install the Big City baffles yet and what do you think? Find any twin fins that will work on the longshots?

I've just sent my old licence for renewal today, I have to renew because I'm 70 and they made me sign a form to say I'm still alive and have at least one working eye.

JH here it is a visit to the licensing office and a written test and an eye exam......
Yea, here we have to do the eye exam every time our license expires as well, I believe every 4 years. They won't take your word for it...
I made my own straight shots for my V star 1100, and fabed some "lolli pop baffles. Its very easy providing you have access to a welder, use 2 5/16 bolts about 1'' long... weld a 5/16 or 3/8 flat washer(vertically) to the top of each bolt...drill a hole in the bottom or side of your pipes about 4'' from the rear....thread a nut on each bolt till it bottoms out, put bolt inside pipe thru the hole and thread a nut on the bolt from the outside to tighten down. You can then adjust the profile of the baffle to suit your tastes.
My PO reamed out the baffles on the stock exhaust. Not a bad sound but a little ragged when you got on it. Anyway the pipes were a little banged up so I managed to score a Roadhouse set. Way better sound. Much better sound. To me if you can hear the motor at 65 - 70 and not get tired of the drone then I'm happy.
