Title: cream cheese on a bagel
Post by: John Hopkins on July 04, 2013, 16:04:02 PM
Well it has taken me over 69 years to try a bagel..the reasons..

I have seen them at supermarkets and motorway service station cafes but there has always been someting I liked for the same price, and although I love sweet donuts bagels have all the promise of a donut but none of the sweet taste..as far as I knew they were just a funny shaped bread roll..

So today I bought a packet from the supermarket to try..

They felt a bit to dense so I thought they could do with a lift, I preheated my oven then sprinkled them with water and put them in the hot oven for a few minutes, after that they seemed a little better so I sliced one in half and spread thick British butter on both halves followed my thick strong cheddar cheese spread..

I feel that in an emergency I could eat another one, the butter and cheese spread were quite nice but the bagel was nothing like a nice crusty white roll..

I can cross bagels off my bucket list and maybe in another 69 plus years I will be ready for my second one..

In the meantime, until they reduce the sugar content for the good of my health, I'll stick to donuts.

John.

No,no,no...no wonder you didn't like it. Bagels are a foundation for Lox and cream cheese...and a thick slice of raw onion. Thin sliced Smoked salmon, cream cheese, bermuda onion, all on a sliced bagel....I'm getting HUNGRY!!!!.

I really have no idea what a lox is but I don't think anything can really do more than mask the texture of a bagel..It is a bit like someone tried to make bread but forgot to put yeast in it or didn't let it rise enough before baking..

Now a nice fresh crusty roll spread with thick butter and lean ham hot and fresh from the oven..followed by a lemon danish with clotted cream...

Lox is... brined salmon... Honestly, I acquired the taste for kippers, smoked herring - ANY smoked fish, etc living in the UK!!  So lox and cream cheese on a bagel works for me... though I will admit to eating bagels very rarely! Now smoked fish... well I love that stuff!

lol while stationed in Germany I lived right across the street from a bakery, so nothing like fresh bread and a lot of fresh butter melted on it and eat the whole thing.......no wonder I am getting as large as GB........

Kippers are the nearest thing you can get to hell..

They taste wonderful, but they have a million small bones to every inch of meat..These days the herrings they make the kippers from are smaller so they are all bones, and to sell more of them they have cut back on the smoking time so they have lost flavour..

Maybe if I can find some lox, I will be back in heaven..

Here ya go: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lox
Scottish smoked salmon would make an acceptable replacement for real lox...I like mine with a slice of raw onion on an egg bagel.
