NO IDEA how long this was like this... I check my tires once in a while but especially when you feel something different.  Just out of the blue we took a ride to a legion riders pig roast and I felt a "squishy" back end... got to our destination and felt the tire was soft, not hard like the front so I pumped it up and road straight home -- only live a few miles away.

Next day had it in the air soap bubbling everything after I pressed it up... NO LEAKS?!?  Then I saw THAT!!!  all I can say is O-M-F-G!!!!!!!!!!
(oh, and this is the rear tire... not the front so much easier to miss because of more of the tire is hidden!!)

Kinda anal about tires...not only do I check them at least once a week for pressure, but I check the tread depth every 1,000 miles. I will NOT install a tire "new" that's more than 1 year old on the shelf...I've seen this tread separation on Metzelers before...If you don't look, you will never know, and in this case, what you don't know will kill you.

Yeah, I had a tire do that too... it was a tire that sat in a store for several years... I always get tires where they sell a bunch of them and check the dates.

4 digits...first 2 are week, second 2, year...any 3 digit codes are last century...they ARE out there...

Yes - what Troll said.

The 4 digit date code will always be in a little "panel" like Troll's pic shows - because the date code is in an insert in the tire mold that gets changed for variable parts of the tire.  It is always (as far as I know) located immediately after the DOT code, again, like Troll's pic.  It's only on one side of the tire, so  if you don't see it, look on the other side.
