Title: Cold start
Post by: hawkfan on June 14, 2013, 21:58:48 PM
No matter the ambient temperature, when starting my 1500 I have to increase the idle speed to get the bike to warm up before it will idle on its own.  Is there some sort of fix I could put in place to correct this or is this condition adherent of this bike?
Thanks in advance for any assistance anyone can add.

I'm a shade tree mechanic, but the first thing I would do is clean the throttle body, then add some seafoam (5-6 oz) to a full tank of gas and run that through. To clean the throttle body, open the throttle full with the bike not running and spray some seafoam or carb cleaner in there, I use a small round brush to clean mine, be careful around the butterflys, they are brass and you don't want to bend them.

If there is any gunk on the wall where the butterfly rests at idle, it will effect your idle speed.
Also, clean and regap your plugs if you have not done so. Gap .032-.036

My 1500 starts and runs fast until it has heated up then the revs drop to a potato, potato sound and this seems normal to me..

have you had the same tank of fuel in your bike for some time, the new fuel collects water and turns to varnish if it sits for too long..

You might need a filter change..or..

If you don't ride your bike enough it will start to complain, it might just want to go for a couple of hundred miles on a run..

Hiding under the right hand airbox cover are supposed to be 2 fast idle solenoids. They clatter a bit, and a lot of people either disconnect or remove them completely. They work well, but when the computer says they need to stop, they drop the idle speed like a rock...When I made my new backing plate and air cleaner set up, I removed the solenoids and plugged off the air ports into the throttle body. Take the cover off and see if the solenoids are connected, they should have 2 wires on each one...can't remember the colors off the top of my head, seems like they are green with a white tracer...You could use the "choke" knob to increase the idle speed.....

Without using the "choke" knob, mine fires up on high idle, but drops to idle within 15-20 seconds; I use the "choke" knob to keep it on high idle until it is warmed up. With the choke knob pulled out, it still drops to idle within a couple of minutes.

Cleaned up the carb today and it appears to have corrected the issue.  Thanks to all for the input!
