Title: Starter question
Post by: michaelh42 on April 16, 2013, 10:29:39 AM
Last year I posted about my bike not starting when it was cold. Everyone including myself thought it was the battery. I held out and waited till this spring to purchase the battery. All summer and fall I rode without issues. This spring I started with the starting issues.  I went and purchased a 20BS gel battery and I thought all was well until this morning. It wouldn't start again..... I heard a sound like the starter spinning but not engaging the flywheel. This is the same sound as last year so I know it has nothing to do with the battery.  My question now is should I be looking at the started or the solenoid?  Has anyone else has this type of problem.  If I try it a few time the bike will usually start.  My wife is getting very cranky about putting money into it... I also need tires and brakes this year.....  :'(

The starter engages by way of a roller clutch. When mine was sitting in the really cold weather, it would not engage the first time I tried it. Now that the weather has warmed a little, no problems. I suspect that the clutch on yours is not holding.

Here's a diagram of the roller clutch assy.

Page 25 of section 8 in the service manual shows it to be a pretty straight forward job. Access is from the right side by removing the clutch cover....If you need more info, I can scan the page and send it to you.
