Went out this morning to get my oil filter and oil at the local Kaw shop and drove along the lake, and lo and behold a future Darwin Award winner was out on the ice today..yes it has been in the -10 to-20*C for the past few days but the ice has thinned out......can we all say dumb a$$

So how do they know when it is safe to go out on the ice?

About 20 or more years ago, some clown went out on the ice on a small lake outside Dawson Creek, (I think it was Swan Lake) and his pickup fell through. Not bad, but bad enough. So his buddy goes out (remember, stupidity loves company) to pull him out; he falls through. So, they call a tow truck. Remember what I said about stupidity loving company? That's right, he goes out and falls through as well. One or two more and they would have a dope ring! Anyway, they then call a big wrecker; a Kenworth tandem shows up, (and much smarter than the other three) stays on shore, runs his line out, hooks on to the little tow truck, who is hooked to the second truck, who is hooked to the first truck, and rescues all three. Swan Lake 3, fisherman none.....
JH once the ice gets about 6 " thick you can drive on it at a reasonable speed in a car, at about 4" you can run a snowmachine on it as long as the water is not moving undr the ice.

these guys are awesome in their recovery an have been featured on TV. Once your vehicle goes under the ice it is a daily fine of $1000.00 per day under the ice......average recovery of the vehicle is about $10,000.00 for the complete job. Interesting to watch them do it......
They used to hold car races on the lake there at Waukegan, Il... sorry, being a southern boy at heart I could never bring myself to driving my corvette onto Lake Michigan!

Wow..I can't think of anything on the ice that would be worth $10,000..I can't wait for global warming to kick in so that I can turn my central heating off and save $3,000 a year.

That's what I mean, the 1000 per day fine makes the 10000 recovery cost "affordable"
