Title: Rear fender differences????
Post by: Troll on March 19, 2013, 10:32:05 AM
I was looking at the picture of Bake's bike (nice) and saw that he has a Harley fender tip installed on the rear. I bought a set of those tips a few years ago, and was only able to install the front...There seems to be a difference in the rear fender shape of Bake's '99 and my '01....mine has a vertical extension, and sculpturing on the bottom that doesn't seem to be present on the '99.

It would be nice if someone with a 99 would take a closeup pic of the rear fender as Troll did in this post, so we might compare an unmodified 99 with later models.

I just checked at bike bandit, and they list a rear fender assy, complete for a '99.....for $725, but no listing for the '01, so there must be some kind of difference.

The part numbers are the same for a 1999 & 2001 (35022).  The color code is different of course, but the main PN for a 1500 stays the same.

Because of the shape of the rear fender, there is no way I can get the H-D tip to fit without folding it.....Bake's seems to lay flat, so what's going on?

Tried to show the difference between the two with pics but it started a new post.

Troll, looks like yours has about a 1/2 inch "flange" around the edge - flat area, not continuous with the curve of the fender

Whereas Bake's is a continuous line.

So much for my art skills, but is that what I'm seeing?

Just Curious... I noticed that Troll has the newer style bumper so to speak where the turn indicators attach... Where as my '99 has the older style wrap around bumper where the indicators attach.

Mine runs smooth to the edge and doesn't have the raised edge like Troll's.

Well, there you go. Obviously there is a difference, and if you had to replace the rear fender on a later 1500, you might have to use the '99 style....not that this would be an issue, but it sure makes for a reason to do more research. Yes, the "flange" is about 13 mm high, and it definitely doesn't blend with the fender line. More research!!!!!

I have a 99 blacked out gooseberry red Drifter 1500 and have the same vertical fender flange as Troll. On both rear and front fender.
It is a european version, just for the facts :)

I'm wondering if maybe the early 99's had the smooth style and the tooling was later revised to include the "lip" for strength.  My 2001 has the lip.
