Title: "No Lightbar" Solution
Post by: cruzrjo on May 02, 2009, 17:00:50 PM
cruzrjo here (2005 Drifter 800):
I mounted 4-1/2" spot lights to the front directional light bar. It went easy following the mods/tips provided here. My one question is exactly which wire do I take 12V power from. I want the spots to be on when the bike is on and off when the bike is off. The red/yellow wire in the headlight can is for the low beam, the red/black wire is for the high beam and black/yellow is ground. If I attatch to either wire, the lights go off when I change beams. If I use the white/blue wire in the can for accessories, the spots are ALWAYS on, key or no key. I thought about using the blue wire which is power for the front directionals. This would work but I wonder if the directional circuit could handle the extra power for the spots. I thinking of using the red/blue wire because it seems to be the main supply for lower voltage lights. Any comments?

I think my lightbar uses the turn signal power.  I'd track down some lightbar installation instructions and use the power source they would use.

Cheers

Thanks for the info. I will check that.
I appreciate this web site. I check it often to get ideas.

Chief is right, it uses a sourse from sig lights. Why do you want them on all the time, it'll just drain your battery at low rpm's.

Hey Cruzr,

Take note of the warning about the battery drain at low rpm. This is a serious problem when you are stuck in the middle of nowhere and not enough incline (hills) to jumpstart the bike. I've made mods (aux cables) on my bike for that very reason.

Your battery will discharge in 15-20min if you leave just the headlight on never mind the spots.

The reason they are connected to the aux power is simply this, if your headlight goes out/dead you would still have your highway lights and vice versa.

I have connected them to the headlight and blown the fuse (at night while riding) and had to dissassemble an entire bracketing system to remove the seat just to change the fuse. not fun..lol

You are far better served having them on aux and blowing that fuse, than losing either the headlight or your turn signal fuse at night.

Hope that is helpful.

If you don't over-do the bulbs in the spots, you will be ok. Mine has a switch so I can turn the spots on or off.

The charging system for the drifter is pretty light weight so you have to be careful of the load.

Spots are a safety feature from my perspective. They make you more visible, day or night. They provide more illumination at night, AND they provide light when the headlight bulb fails. I've had a headlight fail at night... it ain't fun!

Cheers.
