Title: Kickstand plate
Post by: John Hopkins on January 26, 2013, 08:12:58 AM
I hate to reinvent the wheel and I have done a quick search..so here's the thing!

I want to make a kickstand plate so that if I park my drifter on grass the kickstand won't sink in and topple the bike..

I know I can carry a piece of wood but I wanted something slightly more elegant..

The idea is to fit something to the bike that won't look like a pigs ear that I can easily remove to slip under the kickstand to enlarge the footprint..

After looking at the bike the sissy bar seems the best place to store it and steel may be the best material to use..

Now I can cut the steel to fit under the sissy bar pad but I am looking for some attachment ideas that enable a quick release..my idea is a bracket with a center threaded hole and a wing nut..

Anyone have anything better..

John.

Some type of clip on or snap on with a plastic link, right off the brain, let me mull on this one for that day......

Although not pretty, actually it is black so looks mean zilch, I cut a 3/8" piece of hard rubber in an oval shape about 3" by 2" and keep it in my windshield bag. I use it all the time under my kickstand and has never let me down when parked on a soft spot.

Personally, I just use a piece of plywood, kind of pentagon shaped; left over from some project. But, that being said, I am kind of fond of aluminum tread plate; looks nice, about 1/8" thick, weighs almost nothing. I have been mulling that over this winter; as soon as I am done with the hand shifter/clutch combo, (no, I haven't forgot about it; been under the weather for some time now,) might cut one out and figure out a jiffy-mount for it.  :D

I have a piece of 1/4" steel that's about 6" squared that I painted black.  It sits in the bottom of my left saddlebag until I need it.

Ok guys this may seem crazy, and RATMAN I'm surprised you didn't think of this. The good O'l hockey puck works great.I hav'nt got around to doing this yet,but I'm thinking if you notch the puck out for your kick stand to go in,but leave a little in the front as a stopper.Works great for tailgaters as well.Great multi tool LOL

I have a round plastic disk with a hole in the lip on a string. I usually keep it in my windshield bag on the drifter. In the garage I have a piece of billet chromed that I used for some project.

On the Goldwing I have one of these...

So send me one and I'll send you back the cold you've sent down, back. You could even put your John Hancock on it to make it that much more meaningful. ;D

Yeah..the idea is to put it somewhere on the bike so that it will be there when I need it, but not in the bottom of a bag taking up space...

I going to cut a cardboard template tomorrow, then look around for some scrap to mark and cut for the plate, then use some more card for the holding bracket..If I do it right it should look like part of the sissy bar.

My insurance agent gave me this one..about 4" square. I have another one from a lawyer, that's about the same size, but octagonal. That one is ORANGE...hard to leave it behind.

now that is cool and it is permanently kind of mounted to your ride....better then a defaced hockey puck.....and not having to dig around in a bag to find it....

you now are on the official no pants list.....for pictures........my comment on bag hunting will not be typed into the forum, but I am sure with your furtile imagination you can finish it. But it does make sense to have it attached to the side stand so you never have to find it. Great if you are in the areas were paved shoulders and a lot of parking lots are gravel, and really good for you people down south were the parking lots get really hot and the pavement heats up and gets soft. Also really good for our BigFoot Boy in BC with all the pine needles on the ground and the soft mountain ground whie he is out hunting up magic mushrooms.......

Several years ago, a buddy of mine and I came out of the Canadian Tire store, walked over to our bikes; someone had parked their Harley next to ours. Problem was, it was a VERY hot day, he didn't put anything under his sidestand, and his bike was about halfway over on its side. Bob went back to the store but couldn't find the guy, so we pulled his bike back up and put one of our plywood plates under his kickstand. I wonder what he thought, when he came out and saw his bike on that piece of wood, and the rather large hole in the pavement right ahead of it.

I do know that a empty crushed beer can were you fold the end in does an awesome job, so just carry a can of beer around with you and when you need it drink it , crush it and bingo a stand support.

I got one free from a lawyer that had a booth at a bike meet.  It's just the usual thing with their advertising all over it, but it works.

I should hang on to that if I were you..it isn't often you get something free from a Lawyer...

If he smiled when he handed it to you, count your fingers..

So far with all the ideas for a kickstand plate the ones here for sale on the forum seem to be the best option,IMOP.Especially like RATMAN said they are attached with a set screw and no monkeying around in your bag trying to find it.

I'm really curious if this plate will be large enough for extra soft surfaces or gravel. Grass a day or two after a solid rain, super hot blacktop, etc...

I was wondering the same thing!

The problem with the one I have on the GW is ... its specific to THAT style foot, and it could get in the way if you've changed anything. ANY attached plate is going to be a problem for those reasons...

So:

Attached Plate
Universal Plate
The best plate would be the one that is there when you arrive and stays when you leave... not likely. So you have to carry one with you.

I'm going to get serious about designing one that will deal with most of these problems. I have an idea that might work - and resolve the problem of a universal plate.
