wondering, why does the 1500 have a choke if it's fuel injected?
Its not an actual "choke"... it increases idle speed through linkage to the throttle plate.

Yep... never use mine personally.
my bike will not start, unless i pull it out all the way.
Then you have a problem with your fuel injection... required use of the choke is not normal.
I agree with Chief. I've never needed to use the 'choke' on my 1999 1500 even below freezing; it starts and adjusts to idle rpm perfectly, with standard exhaust or V&H Longshots. Try a couple ounces of good injector cleaner with your next tank or two of hi test gas.

Yeah the injector cleaner is a good first step. Not a bad idea as a preventive as well.
Did somebody disconnect or remove the two idle air control valves in the right airbox housing? When I start mine, it goes up to about 1500 rpm, and then settles down to about 900 after about 30 seconds, depending on how cold it is outside. I have read that people who put the Baron or the Kuryakin kits on, remove the solenoid valve completely, since the clicking noise they make bothers them. The "choke" does nothing to enrich fuel mixture, it only adds some fast idle to the cold start.
removing the solenoids is pretty standard when folks replace their air box, or remove epa stuff... that could well be the difference here.
