Title: Seats...(sure it's been covered, But I can't find it)
Post by: adeyar on December 02, 2012, 16:56:31 PM
Okay, i would like some advice concerning 2up seats or some type of passenger seat configuration. What it will do to my current saddle bag set up also.
First, I understand the Corbin 2up needs a horseshoe bracket. Does the horseshoe bracket bolt to the current saddlebag bracket?
Second, if i can find a Mustang 2up, will the horseshoe bracket need to be installed per the Corbin 2up?
Thirdly, has anyone here successfully mounted a rear seat that looked good. (I'm not into the OEM and the way it shows under the seat).  A quick detach passenger seat would be cool, but not necessary.
I'm the third owner of my bike and the second owner had it a year and about a 1000 miles. He didn't do anything to add to it and couldn't answer any questions as far as being set up for two to ride. I do know it has the passenger floor boards so I wonder if the original owner had planned to put a 2up seat on the bike.

Not seat related, but I'm looking to put a chrome license plate holder on instead of the black plastic one i have now. Iron Pony told me I needed the light/plate assembly a 150 sum bucks. I don't think they looked up the right part, my plate mount is separate from the tail light.

I know ChiliDrift and I talked about his seat he has, I still want to make it down your way and check it out. I'm trying to weigh cost/value/appearance/practicality/etc...
Also, does the Mustang 2up fit without modifying the saddlebags?

OK, let's start with all the known Drifter seats: http://www.vulcandrifterriders.com/drifterseats.html (http://www.vulcandrifterriders.com/drifterseats.html)

This is my own Kawasaki/Corbin (not a true Corbin, but the Kawasaki Fire & Steel seat that uses the Kawi pan and Corbin foam and cover) with saddlebags (on my 1500)

http://www.vulcandrifterriders.com/oemsbsetup.html (http://www.vulcandrifterriders.com/oemsbsetup.html)

The Mustang seat is really just a cover for the stock seat, and it does require the horseshoe bracket you saw in the pics in the last link.  You can mount a Mustang seat made for another bike, but it's a custom setup.  You can see all kinds of seat info here: http://www.vulcandrifterriders.com/reviewpost/showcat.php?cat=52 (http://www.vulcandrifterriders.com/reviewpost/showcat.php?cat=52)

You can't mount a seat on the rear fender as it's plastic and won't hold the weight, plus it moves with the rear suspension.

For the plate, any decent auto parts store can sell you a chrome plate surround, but I did the lay down trick ( http://www.gadgetjq.com/laydownplatedrifter.htm (http://www.gadgetjq.com/laydownplatedrifter.htm) ) and I think it looks great (very trick, and it's dirt cheap too!).

Here it is in my ride: (https://www.vulcandrifterriders.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi83.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj319%2Fpcarrell%2FDrifter%2FIMG_0760.jpg&hash=15d87259dbeb74458a4818421f75c4ae883a28a2)

I also want to add that Heather's Leathers will made a custom Buddy seat like the antique Harley and Indians used. They are expensive but look so much better for two up riding as compared to the OEM or even the Corbin. I should say in my opinion. You can check them out here http://www.heathersleathers.com/ (http://www.heathersleathers.com/) click on Drifters to see some of their creations.

I saw the seat page. The very first picture in the seat page is the oem 2up. What is that bar that wraps around the back of the seat? that looks awful to me. Does the horseshoe bracket bolt to the current saddlebag bracket? Does the oem 2up work with the oem saddlebags?

That's a great looking bike pc.

I like those seats from Heathers Leathers, but to me the Corbin looks better.

I'm looking at the seat mods now.

Why are the brackets sticking out of the back of this seat
and not this seat

The horse shoe bracket works with the saddlebag brackets.  See the second link in my first post.  It shows how they go together.  The horse shoe bolt on first and the saddlebag bracket goes on top.

The seat rail for the 2up can be used or not used.

The first is an 800 with a saddlebag bracket but no saddlebags, the second a 1500 without saddlebag brackets.  The tipoff is the shocks on the 1500 are visible, but the 800 has a hidden monoshock.

I'm trying to post pics but I keep getting this message. "Your file is too large. The maximum attachment size allowed is 2048 KB."
I even tried posting one pic at a time. Anywho, this sounds like good news. It is possible I can buy a oem 2up, cover it with a Mustang cover and NOT have to drop or mod my bags because it works with the horseshoe bracket. Am I seeing/reading this right?

Yup!

This is the 2up horse shoe bracket with the saddlebag brackets mounted.  This is what it looks like when you just take the 2up seat off.  (No Seat Rail)

As for adding the pics, I'd suggest setting up a photobucket account.  It's free and it'll allow you to copy/paste links to your pics easily.  It resizes them automatically.

Okay, this looks like the exact same setup I have. Except there is a spacer inbetween the saddlebag bracket and the frame. I bet (not much, like five buck cause I'm not much of a gambler) this bike was sporting a 2up at some point.

I wonder why the Corbin 2up isn't set up the same way. Hmm...

The corbin two up requires the same horseshoe bracket as the oem two up and the F&S two up.

Chief, why does the Corbin 2up not work with the OEM saddlebags?

I was under the impression that the Corbin seat worked with the OEM saddlebags and brackets.

I have the Corbin solo seat and the OEM saddlebag brackets will not work with it. You have to use brackets like the ones sold by Osprey. I would assume the same goes for the Corbin 2 up.

I just got off the phone with a tech from Corbin. He told me that if I reversed the bolts on the saddlebag brackets (bolt head on the inside) that the seats will fit. I can't understand at all why the solo seat would not fit with the bags. :o

The shape of the pan at the rear does nor allow it to drop down far enough to attach the angle brackets to the frame with the saddle bag brackets on. I don't see how reversing the bolts would do anything to make it fit.

I do not know enough yet about how you mount bags, but my impression is the bags would be stationary with the seat and when going over a bump, the rear fender would travel up between the bags, since they aren't connected to it.  Is that right?  Like I said, I don't fully understand how the bags are mounted.

Yes, that's how it works. The bags are connected to struts that connect under the back of the seat. They do the same job as the frame rails that support the fender and bags on a Nomad/Classic, but the fender is attached to the swing arm, and thus moves with the suspension...This whole setup was universally panned by the "motorcycle press" when it was introduced, but when Harley copied it (Rocker "C") it was the greatest thing since rubber tires...By the way, if you think the 2-up seat on a Drifter is ugly...look at the folding spoon on a rocker.....

I am thinking this arrangement would greatly limit the payload you could carry in the bags then, due to the stress on that seat frame.  But I guess then again, you wouldn't be filling them with rocks.

That frame is pretty solid.  If anything, the weakest link in the setup is the bolts that attach the saddlebag struts to the frame.  For that, some good old grade 8 bolts will do quite well.

:P  just have to add and I know I don't have a 1500 but seems to be a lot of talk about the seats on the 1500's and how uncomfortable they are. Now I have the OME seat on my 800 and it is really comfortable and fits my backside just perfect. So I am wondering how come the seats on the 1500 are so uncomfortable or is it really that the riders of a 1500 need to get smaller backsides........

oh here we go hang on now.......

While I'll acknowledge your point and concede that you my be right, I love my stock solo seat.  It's probably the most comfortable seat I've ever had on a bike.  On the other hand, I have a Fire & Steel 2up that was like sitting on a park bench it was so hard.  I ended up pulling the cover and hogging it out to add some gel pads, then putting the cover back on.

I don't know either, that's  just what he told me. In fact he said he's done it three times.  I looked at it and on my bike with the luggage rack, it would be a heachache to do everytime I wanted to switch to a solo seat.

I like the look of the Corbin. But it's expensive ad when I consider the cost of the passenger back rest AND the cost of new brackets for the saddle bags AND the U support bracket it makes my head spin. I'll probably go with the OEM 2up. I've also contacted a local bike shop who will mod the OEM seat and re-cover the seat. Still a couple hundo cheaper than a Corbin.

The OEM brackets for the saddlebags will not work with the Corbin solo because of the shape of the pan. I never was talking about the Corbin 2 up!!

Ya know, after all my research and bouncing around different ideas, I'm probably going with the Corbin, especially since it has been confirmed that my bags will in fact work with the 2up. The Corbin has a wider back seat for her and what makes Cece more comfy, makes me more comfy. I also didn't realize the options for backs rests for the Corbin were so many. That helps a bunch. Back rests made to fit the Corbin seat are available for for a lot less than buying one outright from Corbin. Many people on here seem to really like them.

That is a sweet looking seat though, Lady.
