I am looking at safety glasses and thought the transition lenses would be a good idea. Does anyone have experience with photochromic lenses? Ive read a few reviews and would like to find something that gets pretty dark. Any advice?
I do know that we are not allowed to wear then to work or while driving company vehicles. I have people that have them and like them others do not like them, depends on how fast they can change seems to be the issue.
I was looking for riding use. The Eclispe xt are pricey but claim to work really well as far as darkest availble and clear at night.
What if you were riding at night on a dark road, then all of a sudden a car comes up over the hill with brights on? The lenses would darken, but then when the car passes, you are trying to look through dark lenses, until they change back to clear. I guess it depends on how quickly they react.

A few years back I owned a pair of prescription transition lenses. The change in color was not so drastic that I would have had to worry about passing cars. However, a lot has changed since then (technologically speaking). I am curious if anyone has any experience with them.
well I have my Serengeti Driver sunglasses for the sunny times and then a nice pair of clear safety glasses for the drak and night riding. An not that expensive to have them.
I have a pair of Oakleys with transition lenses as I wear script glasses. THey are great, def expesive, clear at night black dark in the day. Best purchase I made last year. I used my optical plan from work to help pay for them. I bought my passenger a pair of Bobsters off of Jafrum.com she really likes them. We decided on Rose color. there is still a bit of tint to them at night. But they are great driving glasses and plenty dark during the day. I think they were about 40.00 USD.
I've worn the transition lens prescription glasses for many, many years. I am a certified safety pro with over 30 years in the biz... I am also an NSC Defensive Driving Course instructor. I know of no reason why good lenses should be a safety concern. Of course, I ALWAYS wear them when I ride.
The new lenses get darker/lighter gradually... caused by UV... they are absolutely NOT a problem in vehicles. Inside vehicles they are not exposed to enough UV to cause them to get very dark. They do still get dark, fortunately. The old lenses used to get very dark and stay dark when you entered a dark environment... so much so you had to take them off to see. I haven't noticed that problem with newer lenses.
With that said... there may be many non-prescription lenses out there that get too dark, too quickly or fail to lighten quickly enough.

I'm going to be using my clear safeties for night riding too.
Thanks everyone.
Hanging onto multiple pairs of glasses is a problem for me. I like not having to worry about shifting between sun and clear... and if they are on my head, i can't lose them... easily.
I purchased these and love them.

Nice. How dark do these glasses get?
They get pretty dark. Did you watch the video? Compared to Oakley they are a bargain.

Yea I did. But, you know, videos can be deceiving. Thanks. Looks like a good deal.
I chose the Global Vision Kickback 24 photochromic clear to dark smoke riding glasses. They change really quickly, they are comfortable and only about $40 bucks at Iron Pony. The glasses get plenty dark and get clear. Good buy, very happy with them. Have to thank my wife for a good Christmas gift!
