Would anyone know where I can purchase a pair of silencers or mufflers for the Vanes & Hines straight shots I have on my 2001 Drifter 1500? I installed new baffles which really didn't quiet them down much. I contacted V&H and they tell me they do not have anything quieter.
Thanks in advance for any information or directions would be appreciated!
I bought my '01 with the same straight pipes you have. I was embarrassed to ride it. I work part time weekends at an Army Base, and the gate guard, as well as the M.P. Patrol guys always looked at me funny.....I usually leave at 5:30 am on Sat. and Sun. to go to work, so I had to just about idle all the way to the main road....neighbors, ya know. I found a Cobra "peace pipe" on eBay, and that's been on for 30,000 miles now. MUCH improvement. I have a friend who put those pipes on her 1500 Vulcan, and 2 sets of baffles, end to end...she went back to the stock exhaust. There was a complete Drifter system on eBay, last week. Went for $152.50...almost $2500 in parts! Keep looking for people selling used parts, you might get lucky. Keep in mind, the Vulcan 1500 systems will all fit, with a little modding of the right hand passenger peg mount.
Thanks Troll for the great response! I'll keep looking for something that will meet my needs to tone it down.
Maybe those boys were looking at that bike because they can't help it...lol I know how you feel. I think mine are pretty darn loud. At least i my neighbors are cpl hundred feet away. But I feel embarrassed sometimes too, I ride with ear buds in most of the time. It definitely has a wide range of sounds.
Might find something here......

Thanks Phillip.
from gadgets page I welded 4 1/2 washers for each pipe on my dual bagger nice low rumble but not to loud.
JC Whitney sells baffles; not sure of quality or fitment, but worth a look.

Heresy! Lunacy! Quieter pipes? What's next? Shorter skirts? Smaller boobs? Smaller engines? Less ponies?
Well, I like 'em loud, short, large, big blocks with lots of ponies. Just a little poke at those who like 'pokies'. Hee-hee.
I'm older now, but "there can still be only one"!! By the way, anyone seen an authentic Japanese katana laying around here anywhere??

You TOTALLY get a "like" for that!
I like my after market pipes but during my Iron Butt ride last year the noise got old at around the 14 hour mark. With 2 more Iron Butt rides planned for this year I was thinking about throwing the stock exhaust back on.
I love my V&H longshots..
Loud pipes save lives..
And bright flashing lights, loud sirens, good brakes, empty highways, and girls in short skirts..well maybe not the girls..unless they are doctors or nurses..
John.
Personally, I like my loud pipes, but I understand they're not for everyone. Isn't it great that we're all different? The world would be a boring place if we were all the same.

it might be boring, but at least all the parts would interchange...
(no more having to find an exact match for kidneys, livers, hearts and such)
45 Bravo
True.........
But could you imagine ending up with some of Ratmans' parts???EEEH!! :o ;D

Well, at least you know what you're getting ahead of time!
that remark coming from a magic mushroom eating Yeti........man that was hurtful
I have V&H Longshots and for a while I ran the stock baffles with the Smart Parts Hard Core silencers. They quieted them down quite a bit at cruising speed but I lost one when the bolt holding it in came loose. You might try a set of those and watch the bolts. I finally went back to the Long Shots with no bafflles at all and love the sound.

Around here, loud pipes are a must. Too many peeps that are driving while distracted (DWD), whether listening to music, on the phone, texting, putting on make-up, eating food, reading the paper, too old to care, etc.

Ain't that the truth! I passed some lady on the 4 lane awhile back, eating from a bowl, with a fork, while doing around 65-70 mph! >:( Really paying attention to the task at hand.....
49Reo
ok this must have been in Montana, because BC has no real 4 lanes and people do not drive at 65-70 mph.........
need to call you on that .......
Well okay, if I have to explain it to you. In B.C., (Canada for that matter) read that 110-125 km/hour; yes, we do have 4-lanes, even 6 and 8 lanes, down around Vancouver, but that is beside the point. Yes, it did happen in Montana; between Lolo and Missoula. Now if you need, Ratman, I could draw you a picture, then maybe you could see it..... ;)
Now have a nice day and DON'T FORGET TO TAKE YOUR MEDICINE!!!!! Your mind is going out without you again..... ;D
49Reo
ok and when are you allowed in Vancouver? Picture..........can you stay within the lines while colouring? Ok and it did happen in Montana, Frontier Justice.....yup.....ok
last dumb a$$ was in the Muskokas, during a traffic jam that had us backed up about 45 kms, traffic was moving slow but pretty steady for the most part at about 30 kms or so (49 that would be 18.641645 mph) and they were making announcments over the local radio stations it was due to a collision between 2 Tractor Trailers...van along side us is a female driver, she has her left foot up on the dash, right foot on the gas, she is reading the paper and drink a coffee and has a bagel or somehting in her hand also, and the four kids are in the back strapped in their seats so they would have been safe if she ran into anyone while perusing the paper.......
When it comes to baffles or silencers, I vote with PC... neither! ;)
I have baffles, but they're small. They give it a throaty sound that's not too obnoxious at lower RPM's, but they have some real bark when you open it up. Indiana doesn't have any laws regarding sound levels on an exhaust, so a lot of guys do just run straight pipes.
Humm, I'll have to plead stupidity,.. I've not; inspected mine enough to know what's in them. Lol they are "obnoxiously loud according to my Drifter buddy with a stock setup. Btw... if it matters t anyone,... running em the empty pipes with a K&N air filter gives me a HUGE performance increase! I know the gurus know this,.. but for you newbs.... it is Very noticeable. When I ride with the Moose Riders... my regulars who I am the only Vulcan rider,.. are always impressed as they are running their screening eagle addons.. but hey are only impressed after riding a while... I am definitely a loner in Harley local 1690's. They like my bike after we hang for a bit.. I doubt they will have my back if I piss s;me redneck off.. but they will at least share a beer with me and park beside me..lol
