Title: newbie..with question
Post by: backtowork99 on July 02, 2012, 13:20:05 PM
Greetings..just purchased, but haven't pick up yet, a 1999 1500 drifter..checked out a bunch of posts looking for an answer..it's probably out there, I just missed it..the bike is bone stock except for the seat..my question is, on the exhaust there is  a black thing( convertor?) with 3 elbows, connected to the exhaust..can this be removed and the exhaust holes capped?, or is there an O2 sensor for the fuel injection connected to it..doesn't look like aftermarket exhaust have one..I would prefer to keep the stock exhaust system..thanks

Commonly referred to as either the goat bladder, or goat belly, that is a "pre-muffler/collector". If the bike has California emissions, that's where the catalytic converter would hide...This is an "open loop" injection system, so there is no O2 sensor.

Thanks..so, if it's not CA , then it can be removed, and cap off pipes?..or is that not possible?..

I believe there is a thing called a "dutch bypass" that might be what you are looking for.

This is done on a Drifter...probably not as expensive as a stainless kit from Holland.

After some research, I found a diagram of the stock muffler..looks like an engineers nightmare..that's what I get for asking questions, without have the item in front of me..thanks Troll..the Y pipe looks like the way to go...

Along these same lines, If you gut  or bypass the goat bladder, do you have to adjust the mixtures on a 99 1500?
(aka power commander)

Or if i install some aftermarket (cobra) pipes, would i have to ad a commander type device?

I'd test ride it after the mods before you decide to spend extra money. Remember, the power commander doesn't control fuel under 3000 rpm, according to their own fuel map.

What Troll said...

Usually a pipe change/mod doesn't require an additional FI box... I say usually, because when I installed mine I DID need a box... you usually only require the additional adjustment when you change the air and the pipes.

There are other boxes out there. I have a cobra FI2000... one minor adjustment to one pot did the trick for me. No maps to deal with. The PC III has a lot more adjustment and can be tweaked - but might require a dyno to get to top performance.

Truthfully, I have no desire to ad a Fi box.

I just want a little more roar on acceleration, but not loud enough idle to annoy the neighbors as i leave for work some mornings at 5am.

Thats why i am looking to buy some cobra pipes. or remove/modify the goat bladder.

My air system is stock, a po took out the solenoids.
the reed valves are in place.

it just runs and starts great no matter what the temperature is outside (this last year it has gone from 10 degrees f. to 106 deg f., and the only time it has never started instantly was at 106 when the engine is warm from riding)
and i have NEVER and i mean NEVER had to use the choke yet.

I really would hate to mess up a good thing.
and if doing this mod/change over would possibly upset the reliability of the bike, i won't do it..

Now that I have the bike in front of me, I see what needs to be done to make the Y pipe..don't think my skills can do it all..and was wondering if there is a way to contact the rider who made the y pipe,to see if one can be made for my my bike ..

According to the web page his email is
drifterdon@shaw.ca

I think by looking at the photos the pipe guy will probably need your pipes to do the mod.
Or make you one and and your pipe guy make it fit

But I think most exhaust shops worth their salt could do it.

Like 45Bravo said - any good exhaust shop should be able to do this for you.  Make sure you ask for stainless pipe - it cost about 3x what aluminized pipe does (wholesale cost), but it will last a lot longer.
