Title: ECU HELP
Post by: 1999 Drifter on June 13, 2012, 08:29:27 AM
Well after many of hours of testing, tracing wires etc, last nite with a couple of mechanic friends in my riding group we have determined my problem is a faulty ECU, Now my issue is, the kwai dealer says that if I order it would be on back order till july 26 2012

1.Now does anyone know where I may purchase a new one

2. if buying a used one I believe there is no way of testing these units until installation which means risky business

sooooooo if you have a used one and you are sure about it reliablity please let me know as the summer is here and I want to ride my Drifter

Thanks
Tim "the drifter"

Did you run the ECU fault tests?

If the FI light is working and there are no fault codes being generated (assuming the test was done properly) I would question the "bad" ECU diagnosis.

Personally, I'd find out how much it would cost to have the dealer check the ECU and compare that to the cost of a new ECU. I'd hate to spend the time and money on replacing the ECU just to end up with the same problem. A new ECU is between $700 and $800, and its rare to find a used one...

Correct me if I am wrong:  All of this is because you are getting popping and backfires on decel... you have aftermarket pipes, aftermarket air box and a PCIII...

Have you checked for exhaust leaks? Replaced the pipe gaskets? Tweaked the PCIII? I'd suspect an exhaust leak or a bad PCIII before the ECU - especially since you aren't getting ECU fault indications.

A cigarette or cigar is a good way to test for an exhaust leak; rev the engine up to about 1500-2000rpm and blow smoke around the header-to-engine flange gasket. You will see right away if there is an exhaust leak without putting your hands in the "hot zone"
If you used Kawasaki exhaust gaskets, you might well have a leak; I used Harley Softail gaskets; they are thicker and have more "crush" to them. I Recently put V&H Longshots on my 1500, "tweaked" the PCIII online to get the correct mapping, bike runs awesome; I still get a bit of popping on decel; I haven't done the "marbling" procedure yet which I am sure would cure it. As Chief says, a new ECU might well not fix the problem; and, with electronics, "you pays your money and takes your chances"; no returns allowed. Could be a costly "troubleshoot": you can always go that route after all other avenues have been explored.

Good luck, and keep us posted; always nice to learn something new...
