Title: HD ignition switch
Post by: 1999 Drifter on June 11, 2012, 22:33:09 PM
Tested the pick up coils working properly. I remember some concerns mentioned about a HD type ignition swith being located on the dash, which my scoot has

1. what were the symptoms which caused you to think it was the HD type ignition switch

2. Did it make the bike run poorly on de-cel .....ie, pop or backfire?

3. can a faulty rectifire(sorry about the spelling) cause popping or backfire?

Thanks for your help
Tim

The regulator/rectifier assembly controls charge rate to the battery, just like on a car. If battery voltage is above 13.5 and climbs as engine rpm increases to a max of about 15.2, consider it normal. When I bought my '01, it had the H-D ign switch. The symptoms were pretty graphic.. no fuel pump/no start. Replaced the switch with an oem and no problem since. Popping on decel is a function of the reed valve assy. Oem exhaust doesn't have the problem, aftermarket exhaust exacerbates the issue. Sealing off the air intake to the valves solves the popping...I.E. "marbleing".  Replacing the reeds with coaster plates is a more permanent fix.

What Troll Said...

1 & 2 - bike doesn't start.

3. Battery discharges and isn't recharged if rectifier is bad... it can cause some weird problems, but popping isn't one of them.

After I replaced my exhaust I had the popping and backfire problem. I believe that was BEFORE I did the epa mod... added coasters. I added a FI box (cobra) which resolved the problem. Different exhausts have different effects on our FI system.

Thanks...I have a popping and backfire on de-cel (99 drifter J1 1500 efi )

I have roadhouse doolies with Thunder tear drop K&N filter.

I have the coasters on, have replaced the power commander, I have re-maped the power commander with a map from a another drifter friend with roadhouse, no vacumm leaks, pulser coil is good, rectifier won't cause the problem, ingnition switch won't cause the problem
What else should I be looking at >:(
Thanks
Tim

Make sure you don't have any exhaust leaks... and you need to tune the commander for your bike.
