Title: ENGINE RPM REDLINE
Post by: CARPE DIEM DRIFTER on June 03, 2012, 13:06:38 PM
Hello fellow Drifters,
Does anyone know what the engine RPM redline is on our 800 Drifters? I have searched and searched but found no definitive answer. You can find max horsepower at a certain RPM but max horsepower often occurs prior to redline. Again, search as I might, I can find no definitive figure ( RPM wise ) for the rev limiter in our ignition systems .
I would like to add a tachometer to my Drifter. Barons makes a nice looking unit that gets good reviews but it maxs out at 8000 RPM. Is this enough for the 800 Drifter? Any and all information will be appreciated.
                                                               Thanks and happy drifting,   CDD

Check this out... http://www.gadgetjq.com/drifter_speed_rpm.htm (http://www.gadgetjq.com/drifter_speed_rpm.htm)
Seems to be pretty accurate, and you can make changes that reflect tire and gearing changes, and see the results.

8000 rpm should be good... I think the rev limiters on the 800 are set about 7000 rpm. I've seen different numbers, however.

Troll,
Thanks for the link. If I am understanding it correctly, 7000 Rpm is the redline. 7000 RPM is also the figure that is used  to show max horsepower on the other  800 Drifter specification sites that I have visited.
                                                                                         Thanks again,   CDD

Chief,
Thanks for your input. It appears that 7000 RPM, or very close to it, is the redline on the stock 800 Drifter engine. I also have seen other numbers by bloggers on other sites but have taken their  figures with a grain of salt. Some to say as high as 9000 RPM. I appreciate your learned information.
                                                                                           Thanks again,   CDD

Man I hit 7680 RPMs today for one second I downshifted by accident. I was worried I might damage the motor but it seems fine. Seems like it didn't hit a rev limiter though but then it was only one second so I don't know.  I rarely take it up over 5K and I'm glad I use full synthetic oil for Max protection in situations like this. I have big hulkin riding boots and I did a toe instead of a heel :P
