Title: forward controls
Post by: ernie on May 16, 2012, 14:56:01 PM
Thank you everyone for answering my questions, i have some more. i have been going to different shops and sat on alot of different ones. thanks on previous topic on here pcarrell showed a link for extend brake.

First question is (I tried a vulcan 900 my legs weren't that comfortable I would need a bit more stretch room) how close is a vulcan 900 classic to a 800 drifter as in leg room?  if there is a difference I might not need next few questions lol

2nd if they are close does anyone have forwad controls on their drifter because they needed that room and how much more room did they give?

3rd Is forward controls swapable form other vulcans ( since the brake was for a 1500 and counldn't find anything for the shifter except vulcan classic one?

4th if not swapable anyone know where i can get  both forward controls?

I love the drifter design but of coarse I want to be comfortable and not be in a squat position perfer  a little my foot forward. Since there isnt any drifters at dealerships here I can't just sit on one. For reference ( for people that know about alot of different brands ) I sat on a honda fury and that was perfect for my legs I just way more fond of the drifter style. Yes i am bias by looks when it comes to my vehicles lol

What is your inseam? Mine is 29, and the controls on the 1500 are just about perfect...

One option is to extend your existing toe shifter and brake pedal; remove them from the bike, cut in half, add in what you think you might need, (tack weld the parts together) install them,sit on the bike and see if it feels right, (don't ride it with the pieces tack welded) if correct feel to it, remove them again and weld them up. Paint or re-chrome as you want. I did this on my last Harley, on the brake pedal; added in 1 1/2" cleaned it up, painted the new area with silver paint. When the bike was put away for the winter, I pulled it off and had it re-chromed. Pedal is just right for me.

As to bike fit, I ride a 1500 Drifter, have a 34" inseam, leg stretch is not too bad; haven't changed out the pedals or modded them.

Happy hunting;

my inseam is  34 same as 49reo. sounds like the drifter is different then the vulcan classic which is good  :D   both of you have the 1500, i read that it does have a longer wheelbase then the 800 but that doesn't necessarily equate more leg room. Have either of you ( especially 49reo since inseam is the same ) been on a 800 drifter and noticed a difference on the leg room?
I know ultimately I will need to go take a long drive to a dealership to actually sit on one. which so far the closest to me is east Wisconsin from twin cities, but your answers help me think of possible solutions and prepares me for knowing there may be extra costs such as welding

No, I have never tried an 800; I am comfortable on my 1500 with no mods done to the controls. I have the stock solo seat; not sure if there is any difference as to rider leg room from the solo to the 2-up. Maybe some of the others on this site can answer that for you.
