Title: weird sound from engine area
Post by: Kimbershooter on May 05, 2012, 18:53:58 PM
I have a 2002 1500 Drifter with approx. 13,500 miles. I have noticed a sound from the engine area that is in sync with the exhaust sound. Whenever I hit the clutch and the bike is rolling, no sound. The sound is only heard when the bike is being powered. If the clutch is engaged and the engine is reved I still hear the sound. It is almost a buzzing sound but as I said it is a muffled sound compared to the V & H long shots. I have checked for tail pipe leaks and found nothing. So far, the sound is all that is happening. No loss of power or shifting, etc. Any thoughts? (Almost sounds like a noisy valve train. Current engine oil life is 3500 miles.) Oil gauge shows plenty of oil.

I hadbuzzing sound I thought was engine based... Ended up being a loose spring holding on the heat shield for the pipes.

I checked out the exhaust system including heat shields, etc. Everything is cinched up tight. Still wondering about the weird noise. It is sort of a rotary sound, but as I said,  I don't hear it when running and engage the clutch. If it was a wheel bearing, I would hear it at that time. I only hear it when the engine is running above idle speed. When all else fails, I may need to run it by a mechanic.  At any rate, I will post what the sound was for future reference, whenever and however I get it identified. I am certainly open to more thoughts.

After a nights sleep I woke up with the probable cause. A water pump going out. Makes perfect sense. Also, my memory tells me the motor seems to be running a little hotter.  Will confirm or refute later.

First, WHY can there only be ONE?  On the TV show there were... well an endless stream...

And, secondly... any resolution to "weird sound" problem?
