Hi all ! Just a quick question. It seems like my 2003 drifter 800 is only pulling fuel from one side of the tank. I get around 70-75 miles before it shuts down and I have to hit the reserve. This has happened twice now and I have put about 2 gallons of fuel in it both times. Local kawasaki mechanic says it is probably the fuel filter ? Unless the bike has 2 filters, wouldn't both lines drain to the same filter ? Thanks
The only filters it has are in the fuel valve. The filter for the main tank is about 1" long and if it's plugged part way up, I can see you needing to go on reserve early. There are no halves to the tank, so what you need to do is disconnect the fuel link that runs to the carb (it's the bigger of the 2), put a hose on it and run that into a gas can. Put the valve in pri. position and open the fuel cap, draining the tank out into the can. the smaller line is a vacuum hose that turns on the fuel valve when the engine is running, and off when you stop it. There should be 2 screws holding the valve onto the tank. remove them and you will see the filters when you pull the valve straight down. Another thought that might help you is that the vacuum vent on the fuel tank might have become plugged, or the hose kinked. If the vent hose doesn't allow air into the tank as you ride, vacuum will eventually stop the fuel flow.
Thanks for the quick and detailed reply. Will change the filter in the next couple of days. Very helpful. Thanks
Hmmm. You don't replace these filters, you clean them. Here's a picture of the valve:
Well its obvious I am new to this so again thank you. I appreciate the help
Just a quick update. Drained the tank and took it off. Found that the vacuum hose was plugged with a screw. Don't know why but I cleaned the filter and took the screw out of the vacuum line and connected everything back together. Went for a ride and got 116 miles before reserve one way and 134 before reserve on the way back ! So it appears it was the vacuum line but not sure why it was intentionally plugged off ? But all is good and thanks for the information
That's why the previous owner is often referred to as P.O. The S. is silent
I suspect someone got overzealous dealing with epa stuff... but it certainly would have been a problem for him as well... maybe that's why he sold the bike... and you got it!
I hear ya !! LOL Thanks for the help guys
