Title: changing brakepads on the 800D
Post by: whitecloud on March 06, 2012, 08:07:19 AM
God help me I sound like a total noob but here goes: I got my 800D last year and realised a few weeks ago that the back brakepads needed changing. I had to take off the caliper set as the bolt setup holding the brakepads in place seemed to be stuck, but after a week of WD40-ing the thing to death nothing is moving, though the piston setup is working fine it has to be said.
Part of my problem is that I don't know the system well enough to apply brute force, which has not always worked out well in the past, funnily enough. In this case I don't know if the bolts holding the pads in can just be pulled out directly (after the cotter pins've been removed of course) or whether they're threaded and need screwing out. One is a simple bolt-y looking thing though the other is partially covered in rubber and whatnot. The pdf instructions I have don't really shed any light on this particular aspect, so I'm casting my net out upon the waters of experience if I may. What say ye, brethern of the Drifter?

Two bolts hold the caliper to the mount, the rest of the parts slide together. The little hair pin clip (43084) needs to be removed, and then the rest of the set up will just pull apart. Lube the slider inside the rubber boot with silicone brake grease, and be careful to compress both pistons evenly. I would put an old brake pad in, and then use a big "c" clamp. Once you see how it works , you'll become an instant expert!

The temp got to 62 here, so I just HAD to ride. As usual, I was on the only Drifter, but the bikes were out in full force. We still have a few inches of snow on the ridge tops, and ice on the river,  but they are saying 50 tomorrow and rain...Around here, this time of year, anything above freezing is T-shirt weather!
