Title: Need help - Decel not working
Post by: eagle on March 09, 2009, 09:16:52 AM
Went riding on Friday and dumped the bike after going into a turn too hot.  Decel didn't happen when I released throttle.  Checked decel cable but it doesn't seem to be binding.  Does anyone have any ideas what to check next?

Thanks in advance.

So just to clarify, you dropped the bike, and while the bike was still down on the ground the throttle stayed open even though you let go?

Was it just that one time or does it still happen now?

Also, someone who knows more about them can probably answer this, but I'm wondering why your "down sensor" didn't recognize the bike was dropped and kill your engine like it's supposed to.

Oh, you know what?  Disregard my previous comment.  I totally read your post wrong.

You're saying that the reason you fell is that your bike wouldn't decel.  Now I get it.

My question would be then, did the throttle grip snap back to starting position or did it stay stuck when you released it?  If it stayed, then I would remove the grip and put some grease in it to lube it up a bit and see if that helps.

Thanks for replying.

The throttle grip does not return to the closed position anymore.  Is there a spring at the carb end that might have broken?

Thats what I was thinking.  There should be a return spring there.

Since you say CARB, I assume you have a 800...

Take everything apart and check it at the handlebar before you go any further. Sounds like maybe a cable is broken... trace the cable to the carb and see if that's ok... and functioning.

Let us know what you find.

Cheers

Duh !!!

Problem solved.  The kill switch/start switch housing binds on the throttle depending on how it's positioned on the bars. :P

Well, thats good you got that figured out.  Might be a good time to give the rest of it a onceover while you're at it.  Don't want any more bad things happening to ya!

On the 1500 the proper position is determined with the use of a tit on the housing that fits into a hole in the handlebar. Don't know about the 800 - or if this has any bearing on the situation at all!! <g>

Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond. :)

I've done a thorough once over and found a few electrical connections that were showing a bit of corrosion, so I cleaned them up and soldered those that were just twist/taped.  Didn't find anything else so I'm going riding this weekend.

Take it easy for the first few miles, OK?  We don't want to read about you in the papers!

Went for a 50 mile shakedown cruise on Saturday.  Everything seems to be working properly now.

Thanks again to all.

I was wondering how it all came out.  Good to hear it all went smoothly.
